This is only a rating of the bagels and cream cheese, but this was the best bagel I've had outside Manhattan in New York City. Was it a perfect bagel? No. But there are so, so many terrible, inedible bagels out there that this is still a five star bagel place. Basically the only place I've ever gotten good bagels has been in the Hudson Valley, NY and great bagels in NYC. Even bagels from Montreal were universally lambasted by a friend group who was up visiting a few years ago. I went to Kettleman's on a snowy evening before an Ottawa 67s game, and it was solid. Chewy poppy bagel with a little crisp, nice cream cheese and a soda. Doesn't get better than that. Service was good, though perhaps a bit slow to smear some cream cheese on a bagel, about 5 minutes by my estimate. Stopped by Kettleman's while in Ottawa and honestly wasn't super impressed. There was about a 10-15 minute wait just for a bagel with cream cheese and a half dozen to go, which felt a bit long for something that simple. The bagels themselves were fine, but the cream cheese wasn't my favourite it was pretty runny and didn't have that thick, creamy texture I'm used to. Also, they pack everything in a paper bag, so it's not the same as getting bagels in a plastic bag to keep them fresh, like you would at spots back in Montreal. Overall, it's okay to try if you're curious, but personally I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Montreal bagels still win for me. read more

Just went in for a coffee (Sunday, February 9/25). Had their coffee before and enjoyed it very much. Again this time, really enjoyed it, much better than many coffee shops around. Anyway, I could not find any signage indicating coffee pricing or sizing. I asked the cashier for this information and he responded very curtly and without patience. I would say he was rather rude. He said there had just normal coffee, nothing special like cappuccinos, etc. I had to drag out of him the prices and sizes. Even for sizing, he said they had small and large, offering no indication of ounces in each or any attempt to simply show me the two cup sizes. Why don't they have the prices posted and the sizes on display? I went into the sit-down area to enjoy my coffee but stayed only a minute or so, as it was unbearably hot and humid in there. read more

This is the original Kettleman's location. They have since opened up a few other locations in Ottawa and even expanded to the GTA (Etobicoke). I heard there was talk about them expanding to Montreal, which I personally think is like selling potatoes to PEI, but hey, I'm not an entrepreneur. Kettleman's sells Montreal-style bagels. St-Viateur Bagel will always have my heart in this department, but Kettleman's will do if I can't go to Montreal and want my bagel fix (you know, like right now, in the middle of this dreadful Covid-19 Pandemic). I know the Montreal versus New York style bagels is a never-ending debate, but I am Montreal-style bagels all the way (although I see the appeal of the longer shelf-life of New York-style bagels as day-old Montreal-style bagels might as well go in the compost, but day-old New York-style bagels are still edible). Anyway, I like the dense and chewy bagels at Kettleman's. I like their different flavours too. The herb and cheddar one is my favourite savoury flavour and the blueberry is my favourite sweet flavour. They are open 24/7/365 and it smells so good in there, lol. This location has parking on-site, but the lot is small and almost always full and it's a pain to get in and out of because it's right on Bank Street, which is a pretty busy street. read more

Kettlemans bagels are chewy and fluffy .. maybe New york bagels .. not mtl.. As you bite into a real MONTREAL BAGEL it has that crispy crunch outside and fluffy chewy inside .. Not a fan of kettleman's im sorry ! :/ you're very far from comparing yourself to Montreal's ... the texture is bland and my onion bagel was burnt beyond belief ... i also got sesame bagel ughhh had to throw it out unfortunately.. I would say this is definitely the best bagels in Ottawa, but compared to Montreal bagels, unfortunately I don't find they measure up. They are pricier than Montreal bagels and the texture isn't quite right in my opinion. Service is usually quick which is nice but could occasionally be friendly. Parking can also be a challenge in their parking lot but there is usually quite a bit of street parking available. It's a good thing I live in the Toronto area or else I'd be having bagels for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I was in the Ottawa region and found this location pretty close by, so I thought I'd give them a try. The bagels were amazing! I got my order and they were still warm and there's nothing like biting into a warm, freshly-made bagel! Slightly crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. I bought a dozen and they didn't last two days. And I love that you can see them from the counter working the oven. This review is about the Etobicoke location, at the plaza at Evans and Brown's Line. Delicious bagels - chewy, moist, flavourful, with a bit of crunch on the outside. Also plenty of varieties of cream cheese and options for bagel accompaniments. Walk into this place and it smells tantalizing! Great that they are open 24/7. It's fun to see the bagels going in and out of the firepit(?) on the long paddles, but the place will never have the charm of the old Montreal bagelries. It's just too new and has more of an assembly-line feel in the way it's set up. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is the check-out experience: the cash stations are narrow, there's no place to put your bag down when you're at the cash, and the payment machines are awkward for short people to reach. I always make a trip to Kettleman's whenever I pass by Ottawa; it's always been my favourite. The last time I came was 3 years ago and it has changed a bit in quality! :( Every time, I order the smoked meat sandwich on a sesame bagel for here. This time, the sandwich wasn't as I remembered. Disappointingly, my bagel wasn't even warm or toasted and I don't remember if the smoked meat always tasted like ham? My boyfriend's breakfast bagel was much more crunchy and toasty than mine and I was so jealous! The blueberry cheese pastry was okay, soft and flaky. Nice to have gotten a few extra bagels to my dozen (or maybe they counted wrong). Besides having my bagel not toasted, the biggest disappointment was the service. Standing at cash, it felt like I was at a McDonalds instead of a homey local business--felt more like "what's your order?", blankly staring at you waiting for you to order instead of a friendly welcome to any questions you may have. Cashier seemed bored and didn't even seem apologetic that they ran out of blueberry or chocolate bagels. My review has dropped from a 5 to a 3. Maybe I'll come back again, but I think I'll check out some other food place next time I'm in Ottawa. read more

The sandwiches are great. What an awesome place. Sometimes I get a dozen bagels and a big tub of cream cheese and I sit at a table and eat until I'm full and I take the rest home. I have arranged to meet up with actresses in models there to interview them for my podcast, which is fun. And one of the staff members even turned down the music on the patio, so it didn't interfere with my video. they also have a loyalty program, so you can save up points to buy more food. read more

What's not to love about Kettleman's bagels? It's not only their bagels but the cream cheese there. It is fabulous. And the only cream cheese that I'll eat. I love picking up a bag of hot bagels and walking home. Usually there's at least one of them missing out of the bag by the time I get home. The renovations, they did a few years ago on the Bank Street, Location created nice space including outside tables, which is nice in summer. When I was a kid, my grandparents place was just up the street from the Fairmont bagel bakery. I never thought I find a replacement for that. But Kettleman's does the job. read more

This is a totally crazy place in terms of background yelling and meshugass going on, but the bagels are BANG EN POINTE. Perfect texture. Kettleman's makes phenomal wood burned bagels. I have tried more than a few flavours and have only disliked one of them. But that is a preference and I'm sure someone else would love it. If you like onion bagels, I'd highly recommend that flavour. They also make sandwiches and more in house, their turkey club is delicious and very filling. They are not cheap with toppings. The place can get busy but they move people through fairly quickly and trust me it is worth the wait! read more

I love bagels so I was super pumped when I heard there was a nearby establishment that specialized in such 24/7 in the Ottawa core. On a Sunday morning, it wasn't terribly busy and we were able to order quickly and seated ourselves in the well-lit area. The moment you step in, you can see how seriously they take bagels! The massive oven is visible and you can see how many bagels they're producing; the answer is a lot. I ordered the Italian sandwich on a sesame bagel, and I was super happy with the variety of meats and olives that were on the sandwich. My only request was that there be more meat and toppings in the sandwich, as for $10 I was expecting a little bit more, as it was kinda light for lunch. Beyond sandwiches, you can buy bagels by the dozen, which was a great takeaway for breakfasts and snacks later. Remembering Katelman's place as this was recommended by quite a few folks as the place to go while in Big O. Reached there on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend at around 11 am and there was a lineup to buy fresh bagels. The sitting area seemed full as well. People making bagels by the dozens, rolling them, cutting the dough. A site to see!! Ordered a Egg White and Kale on an Everything Bagel (partly because the bagels were coming out of the oven. The bagel was actually picked up to make the sandwich within a minute or coming out of the oven. How much fresher can it get? Also ordered a Herb and Cheddar Bagel with Hot Pepper cream cheese, a Vegetarian Sandwich on a Sesame Bagel (comes with Spiced pickled Eggplant, lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss Cheese and pesto Mayo), a chocolatine, a cheese bun, coffee and milk. The Egg White and Kale were perfectly done. Freshness you could taste in every bite A sure winner. Herb and Cheddar bagel and the hot pepper cream cheese were really good. The cream cheese had good flavour, however the bagel lacked Cheddar cheese, a bit more would have been perfect. The Vegetarian Sandwich had good lettuce, tomatoes and Swiss Cheese. The pesto mayo was not enough and the pickled eggplant had a bite/crunch to it. I like the crunch pickle cukes, however the eggplant crunch did not go well with us. The chocolatine was perfect and the quality of chocolate was good same could. It be said of the cheese bun. The Dark Roast Coffee from Lily's served was amazing. Picked up another six bagels to go, a pretzel and a pumpkin spice bagel. A must visit when you are in Ottawa. read more

First time at Kettleman's thanks to the recommendation of my sister and my friend - since they lived in Ottawa for university. You could tell that this place is popular from all the people coming in and out of this place. It never seems to get empty, and it's open 24/hrs! It satisfied my craving for a nice fresh smoked meat sandwich. One thing I do want to note is that I was a bit confused about the ordering process because they didn't tell me where I'd be picking up my order, nor did they call out my order. There were so many employees yet none of them were working the expedite section! I love decent bagels. Not the huge, cookie-cutter ones that you get at a huge grocery store. Montreal-style ones are my favourite ones. Well, I went to Montreal in April and won't be back for a bit. However, when in Ottawa, Kettleman's Bagels is like being at a Montreal bagel place! Parking can be difficult. The lot is small and packed. I ended up paying for parking a hop away, by the Beer Store. There was quite the lineup when I walked in. There are a ton of different cream cheese flavours. There are also vegan cream cheeses, which benefits lactose-intolerant folks, too. The bagels smell fantastic! My mouth was watering as I stood in the line, contemplating what to get. You can order a variety of sandwiches and baked goods. I went with ordered a dozen onion bagels and a chocolate puff to go. They are incredibly yummy! HiDefinitely one of the best Montreal style bagels I had. This is an absolute MUST if you pass by Ottawa in any way. Bagels are freshly made, has a nice crunch, and not overly large/dense (but don't be fooled, it is still VERY filling). Perfectly uneven looking for that rustic look. Try it with their deli cream cheese for a classic meal (though they have different varieties of in-house cream cheeses). You can easily buy a few dozen bagels to freeze and reheat at later time, in which it would still taste good. For a sandwich, get the Montreal smoked meat with cheese (The Super House Special with Cheese) bagel. So much awesome in such a small package. For bagels, get any that has sesame seeds on it if you like that extra nutty taste that I do. I got the All Dressed for that extra oomph. Herb and Cheese bagel was also a close second. tl;dr Pretty much you can't go wrong with any bagel at this 24/7 (literally) establishment.
