a variety of pizzas

Local ingredients and many sweet or savoury options. Busy during lunch rush for their pizzas.

SUCH A HIDDEN GEM. I legit manipulated my work schedule this upcoming month just so I can have the chance to come here. The bread here is just amazing. That's not even it lol. The sandwiches are the BOMB.COM!! I had the gouda it's probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had period lol. I need to come back. The people are nice and the service is great. I wish I had the time to enjoy the hole-in-the-wall ambiance they have. Bless your taste buds by coming here.

A great spot for lunch on Bank St! They offer sandwiches, pizza, paninis, cookies and other baked goods. I got the Gouda sandwich - tastes amazing grilled! The focaccia bread is crunchy and the ingredients go so well together. Arugula, peppers, capers, roasted onions, potatoes, dill ranch and Gouda. Very filling for $12!

HIDDEN GEM. This spot has been a staple on Bank since 2005. And now I know why. Everything was delicious. From the sandwiches to the pizza to the amazing treats. My mouth is watering just thinking about all the goodness. This is a must try. Favorites from here was the pizza and the sandwiches.

Delicious Tempeh Sandwich

I don't seek out vegetarian food, but it's nice to know that such a good option exists here in Ottawa. The tempeh sandwich was packed full of flavour, with a nice crusty bread. If you want pizzas, make sure you show up a bit later in the morning (11am is safe, though when I went on the weekend some pizzas were already out so maybe 10:45am?). I've had the mushroom/green onion/potato pizza multiple times now and it's an interesting, surprisingly good option. If potatoes on pizza is not for you, they usually have 4-5 available.

This olive pizza from Bread & Sons really hit the spot! It was perfect for a quick bite to eat on the go on Bank street !

We were attracted by the scent of their fresh oven baked pastries just cooling off on the shelves and we had to go in to take a peak. We noticed a lot of people inside self serving and picking out the pastries they wanted into their boxes. We picked out a few pastries and cheese buns and took it to go ...boy was it freshly baked and warm. I had a few already and I don't regret it. Service : super pleasant and helpful very nice staff and they seemed to care a lot ! They explained to us which ones were popular and the different kinds of pastries ( some were savoury and some were more sweet) Ambiance: it was fun and the smell definitely wooed us in .... lots of great varieties. Overall, definitely recommend this little bakery as its a cute hidden gem and if you're in the area and you're looking for a quick bite of delight I totally recommend you trying this place out so delicious

Vegan pumpkin muffin

I was looking for a vegan baked item to munch on for the morning and saw this bakery had some vegan options. For baked goods, they had a vegan pumpkin muffin ($2.78 after tax), so I went for one of those. Very tasty, soft / creamy texture, with lots of pumpkin spices and pumpkin seeds on top. Pretty tasty. It looks like they offer a vegan tempeh sandwich that I'd be up for trying next time. Good spot.

I couldn't avoid it any longer! I just had to have one of their famous pizza slices! I always see them walking by, and everyone always stops to see what's on the menu. There were a lot of people in the bakery, all picking up a late lunch, snack, or dessert. The pizza slices are all very large and thin crust, and made fresh daily. They had a lot of different kinds - about 7 or more vegetarian options. Many of the ingredients were gourmet, including portabello mushrooms, kale, roasted onions and red peppers, and Gouda and ricotta cheeses. I couldn't make up my mind, and after about five or so minutes of staring at the pizzas, I grabbed myself a slice with Gouda and ricotta. It had a lot of oregano sprinkled all over and was incredibly tasty. One of the best cheese pizzas I've ever had! I can usually eat a lot of slices of thin crust pizza, but I could barely finish the slice, and it's still currently sitting on the table, calling my name.. but I'm soooo full! I also grabbed a Choco-Hazelnut Spelt cookie and a small glass bottle of black currant juice, both delicious as well. My total came to about $7.50 and I was completely satisfied. The service was also fast and very friendly. I will absolutely be back to try some more goodies!

Savory breakfast pastries & best drip on the block!

Favorite food stop in Ottawa by far. Went here several times during our trip. The pain au chocolat was perfect - flaky and buttery and chocolatey. So many breakfast pastry options - I liked that there were savory choices. EVERYTHING we tried was top notch. Chocolate chip cookies had a hint of orange in the dough - yum! The latte and espresso were amazing & we enjoyed the drip coffee, too! And on top of all the delicious stuff - the staff were super friendly and the ingredients are locally sourced. Honestly, I fell in love with Bread & Sons. Wish Ottawa wasn't an 8 hour drive away!

I really wanted to enjoy this bakery! My friend loves coming to this place during her lunch hour and advised me to visit before I left the city. I'm hoping I came on an off day because the pizza was not good at all. I opted for plain cheese and it was a thin crust which I usually like, but the cheese was dripping with oil and was overall a very soggy slice. Not recommended. I also purchased a butter tart and black bean roll since they looked nice. The butter tart was a tad disappointing since I generally like gooey centres, but the crust was good. The black bean roll was also equally as nice. Overall, the butter tart and black bean roll saved this review from being any lower.

Almond croissants are back!

I love this place. I cannot say enough good things about the quality of food that is produced here. Its made with real, honest ingredients and the taste reflects it. Emphasis on local ingredients. I have been trying hard to replicate their butter tarts. When I told the cashier, she just laughed at me.

They bake once and when it's gone, it's gone...so get your cinnamon rolls stat!

The cakes and muffins are moist and tasty, but on the oily/greasy side and very sweet. The cookies are also tasty, but very rich and full of butter, and also very sweet. I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. The bakery is pretty and they have lots of ready to go cakes so you can pick one up last minute if you have to. Obviously you can also pre-order if you want something specific, but they do have a good selection of readymade cakes. Staff are friendly. Street parking only.

I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)

I got 2 Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) $2.50 each, 2 cannoli $3.50 each and a cream filled horn pastry $3.50. I didn't like that none of the items had prices listed anywhere, so I had to ask how much everything was. The egg tarts were not fresh, as the pastry was all soft and chewy. The filling was sweet, rich and smooth though. I love Portuguese egg tarts for their flakey pastry with that crispiness to them when they are fresh, and I did not get that here. The cannoli fortunately were not soft nor soggy, but rather crunchy, despite being prefilled. The shell was a bit too dense and oily tasting for liking though. However, the filling was tasty. The cream horn was filled with a smooth custard, which I enjoyed, but I didn't really like the dry crumbly pastry. Overall, I enjoyed the fillings of the items I bought, but not the pastry. Service was neutral. I don't think they take credit cards because when I went to pay by credit, the man asked me if I had debit instead. The bakery is co-located with Syrian Kitchen. I saw some falafels and rice on display, as well as various dips and spreads in the fridge. No parking lot. Street parking only.

Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards)…read more Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies (except healthier...I think). Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again.

The staff is friendly... but slow and easily distracted. The cashier was taking a phone order while several of us were waiting, pretty unacceptable when another staff member should be able to take a call. We ordered a coffee and a mimosa. Well, they had to go back and check to see if they had juice... they did not. I asked for just the bubbly instead, she had to go back and check again. How do they not know or keep things on their menu in stock? Oh well, they had the bubbly so it was okay. For food we ordered a pastry and a croissant sandwich. The biscotti and pastry were delicious. For some reason, they decided to panini press the croissant sandwich. What the heck, who would do that? Why didn't they ask? Tasty sandwich, but completely ruined due to crushing the croissant. We were expecting it to come straight out of the case and at most maybe microwaved to warm it, not just destroyed in a panini press. Cool vibes, nice atmosphere, food is good, tea menu looks amazing.
