Double Surrey with a fringe on top
    Jen K.

"Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry, when I take you out in the surrey, with the fringe on top...." [1] My son has been pestering me to do this for ages. So even though we're local, we finally rented a 4-person Double Surrey and did the tourist thing in Portland. The rental process is very easy. Located conveniently in front of the Salmon Springs fountain along the waterfront during the warm weather months, they have a variety of bikes to rent. Standard and tandem bikes, single and double surreys, deuce coupes, choppers, quad sports, and slingshots. They even have carriers if you want to tow your little ones. Unfortunately no coupons or discounts that I'm aware of, but they do take Visa and Mastercard, not American Express. You'll present your driver's license, sign a waiver and children under 16 are required to wear a helmet (OR law). Helmets are provided free of charge to everyone in your party. The surrey is easy to drive. There are two steering wheels in front, but only the one in the left side driver's seat works and has a hand brake. For locals with their own bikes, Kerr Bikes gets major bonus points for operating a FREE u-fix-it bike repair station. They provide the tools, so you can tune up or repair your bike. As someone who spends a lot of time along the waterfront, I will tell you that the only problem are the crowds. The path on the west side of the river is constantly filled with pedestrians, frequently with strollers and/or dogs, and cyclists. Almost all of the pedestrians are completely oblivious to cyclists and those moving at a faster pace. The process of navigating your large 'vehicle' around the shambling walkers can be a little frustrating at times. The surrey has a bell and we had to ring it A LOT. The Eastside Esplanade is a much more relaxing place to take your bike, but it also has a few ramps and hills. The rental is by the hour and most people can easily do the loop, crossing the Steel Bridge to the north and Hawthorne Bridge to the south, in 50 minutes or less. If you have extra time, my recommendation is to continue south on the eastside towards OMSI before heading back. You can bring your own food and drink if you want to stop for a snack during your journey, or you can purchase snacks at the rental booth. I've rented bikes on many trips to cities in the U.S. and abroad. It can be a wonderful way to see a city if you rent for a longer period of time. If you are a solo biker, you can connect to the Springwater Corridor on the east side and head south to bike along the river for miles. If you are just doing an hour rental and staying along the waterfront, you will really only get a little glimpse of Portland. But, it sure is a pretty glimpse. This was the perfect family activity by the waterfront! For our small family, the experience was very comedic and very stressful at times. When I reflect back on it, all I want to do is laugh. One would think a bike ride is supposed to be nice and relaxing. Well, we decided to go with a single surrey bike, which was definitely a unique experience. 2 "driver" (1 with an actual steering capabilities and the other steering wheel was for show). So, my 8-year old daughter wanted to drive a majority of the time, but was not the best driver, so there was some screaming involved because we almost veered off the path a couple times. There were some uphill climbs on the pathway, too, which my husband needed to get off the bike to push up the inclines, while myself or my daughter steered. OMG - those were stressful times! Overall, it was a great team-building exercise for our small family and aside from some of the yelling that occurred, we managed to safely return the surrey bike in one piece and us without a scratch. They have plenty of offerings in terms of bikes here: surreys (singles & doubles), single bikes, tandem bikes, and more. The rental rates were reasonable, too! Customer service was great and bikes were readily available. Highly recommended!

    Here we go!

So glad we decided to rent a bike here! It was pretty inexpensive and so fun!! It was only 25 dollars for an hour and so worth it considered it brought a lot of laughs in the hour we were peddling around to get up 2 hills that we didn't think we were gonna get up. I was so worried about scratching the thing by scraping it again sit the side I had my husband drove it and I just peddled and took tons of pictures! I suggest going through the whole circle till you get to the last Bridge you can go across! The views are beautiful! What a nice trail to bike and run on. This bike ride made me fall in love with Portland. The guys that work here were really friendly! They told us the different bikes you could rent. You can get ones with and without shade. Tandem or single. I highly highly suggest doing this if your in Portland. Money well spent for sure!!

Nothing screams "tourist" like a 4 person surrey riding along the waterfront! But yes, I wanted to participate in Portland's bike culture somehow, so these bikes helped me check that off the list. $30/hour for the 4 person surrey ride produced 4 giggling girls riding along the waterfront, taking in the views, bridges and Portland weather (oh, & sore thighs afterwards). The bikes have maps of bike trails you can do, so we ended up doing a big loop around the river & took about 1 hour to get around. Knocking off a star because halfway through we realized one of the pedals was actually not working (meaning 3 people were doing all the work!) So it would be good for staff/customers to check properly before departing.

Great active way to see Portland!!
    Marvin S.

A great chance to see Portland from a seat of a bike! Well, in our case, we road around in a single surrey which was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life! For $25/per hour, we got our money's worth driving around the waterfront of Tom McCall Waterfront Park and crossed one of the bridges for a big loop around the waterfront. It was spectacular! What made it fun was how much effort we had to use to ride around. I worked the steering wheel since the second steering wheel is fake and my wife worked the pedals with me. We laughed so hard trying to negotiate around the waterfront between people walking, objects on the sidewalk, and other people cycling around the same time we were. There was pretty big hill that we had to get up and we used all of our power to get up it! We made it, but I talked a lot of mess to my wife that I was doing all the pedaling. Of course she put as much effort into as I did. It was all in all a great time! Definitely pedal around a little bit and use the brakes not too far away in case they start to make noise. You may have them adjust it before you trek out too far. You gotta leave one of your ID cards as collateral, but it was worth it! Very unexpected, but Kerr Bikes really gave us a chance to see Portland in a beautiful, yet slightly strenuous way!

    Free bike repair station!
    Charlie M.

Thank you guys for being so awesome! I'm glad you reopened in March, and that you're back on the boardwalk until towards the end of the year. The free bike repair station is very handy, and very well-built. It's not a fake for display one like other places have. All the tools are functional and on swivels so you can get more than a quarter turn out of any of them. Two clamp racks for up to two bikes at a time, this place is legit...

    Jeff W.

My family rented a single surrey bike for $25 per hour with a 15 minute grace period. That was enough time to loop around the course displayed on the bicycle's placard. My wife, 8 year old daughter and myself were able to swap seats on the bike although when going up a steep incline I had to get out and push. You see a lot of unpleasant areas on the route as I felt especially vulnerable at one area with a very sketchy crowd. All in all, it was a fun experience, the guy working the business was easy to deal with and nobody in the family got hurt although there was a lot of intense yelling (not by me though).

    Flat tire

What a waist of money. We rented a double surrey bike believing it would be a great thing to do I portland. It turned out to be a nightmare. First of all they give us a bike with a flat tire (we didn't notice until someone hollered at us while passing us). Secondly the bike has no gears !! Even peddling on a straight surface felt terrible, and we are all in good shape and good bikers. Do not rent here. When we turned in the bike and made the complaint about the flat tire they young guy at the counter tried to blame it on us. When I asked for the managers info he said he couldn't give it to us and refused to give any contact information. Instead he told us to leave a review which we are doing now.

During that time, I managed to put 3300 miles on the bike; and on my last ride, I had two spokes break on me. I briefly thought about doing the repair myself, but I've heard truing a wheel can be a tedious process, so I decided to look up Bike Gallery. They had an opening the following Thursday, so I dropped it off one Saturday, and picked it up the next (I live 40 min. away). While it was there, I also had them do a "Deluxe Tune-Up" and replace my chain (which I had purchased, but hadn't installed). The work was completed on Thursday, as expected, and they called to let me know it was ready; and that everything went as expy. I had calculated the total based on rates listed on their website, and was pleasantly surprised to see the total bill was lower than expected. A drivetrain cleaning was part of the tune-up, so the bike looks great; and they have a 30 ride warranty, should any issues pop up with their repair work. I'm very happy with my experience, for sure.

I was told I would be charged the hourly labor rate of $95/hour to install, but I would be called if it would take longer than two hours. The employee appeared to think it would take between one and two hours to complete. The next morning, I got a call saying the bike was ready for pickup and that it took them 5.5 hours to do the installation. I was never contacted to be told that the job would be taking longer than two hours. They charge me $250 for the job and act like they're doing me a favor. If I had been contacted - as I was told I would be - or if this price was presented when I dropped off the bike, I might have been fine with it. But charging more than $190 in this situation is unethical at best. After doing a bit more research, every shop I found that offers installation of RideWrap specifically (instead of just charging an hourly rate) charges $150. I need other parts and more work to get done on the bike, but now that will have to be taken care of elsewhere. Unrelated note: the parking situation at/around the shop isn't great.

UPDATE: After receiving a full refund of the purchase price of my bike from the manufacturer…read morefollowing this incident, I have increased my one star review to three stars. This is because I still have to ding the place two stars for two things. NO ESTIMATE The Beeline confirmation email promises an evaluation and an estimate before work begins. I never received an estimate. This whole dispute began as a billing dispute after Lectric eBikes refused to pay for all the warranty work and additional work was done. Had I been given an estimate listing additional jobs I could have objected then and a lot of confusion could have been avoided. Had I been given an estimate listing work Lectric was refusing to pay for I could have complained to Lectric. Instead, I was told how much Lectric would pay but not for which items or why they refused. This effectively leaves consumers in my position unable to constructively contest the bill. For promising estimates and not providing them I am subtracting one star. CALLING THE POLICE When I refused to pay a padded bill that Lectric had already agreed to pay, this shop tried to hold my bike hostage in order to get the money. That is highly inappropriate when dealing with manufacturers that you have a service partnership with. Everything Lectric and Beeline sends out in reference to shops like this uses the phrase "service partner" or similar language. Eventually I just took my bike and left only to get a call from the police later saying that this seems like a civil matter but that I will get arrested for trespassing if I ever go back to Nomad Cycles. The police blotter recorded the call as a theft complaint. That might have been appropriate had I not taken my own bike and the bill in question not included a combination of unauthorized charges and charges their service partner agreed to pay for in advance. Plus, I called Lectric the following Monday and tried my best to get them to pay Nomad Cycles what they claim to be owed. Thieves typically don't walk into a shop in broad daylight with no disguise, let the staff know exactly who they are, and try their best to get any debts owed of any paid by those that actually owe the money. For calling the cops I am docking this shop one star. CHANGE OF HEART I received a full refund of over $1,000 from Lectric eBikes because I took the bike from the shop and rode it just 4 times afterwards. That was all it took to suffer catastrophic drive train failure. Despite that, the bike still works in throttle only mode with no chain. It turns out that such failures are common when combining a new derailleur with an old worn out chain but nobody ever told me that. Unfortunately, the next time out the folding latch on the frame opened up on me 4 times. This was enough for Lectric to declare the bike unsafe to ride and offer the refund. I also think there may have been a misunderstanding with the owner of Nomad Cycles. When taking a glimpse at his internal notes it looked like he was accusing me of abusing the bike. That could explain why Lectric wasn't paying for all of it or why he wouldn't explain himself, but absent further proof those are just theories. What I do know is that Lectric promotes the bike for uses it wasn't built for which could make a reasonable professional in his position think that the customer had abused the bike. Lectric promotes its XP 3.0 model as an all terrain vehicle. Intended use is legally defined not just by product descriptions and what the bike's design is capable of. It is defined by what the manufacturer says it is for and how they promote it. For instance, Lectric shows XP 3.0 users riding offroad on sandy saltwater beaches, on gravel, in the desert, and across grass fields. That establishes that the bike is promoted for general offroad use. Then you have the blog post announcing the XP 3.0 which specifically says "tough terrain? no problem!" before saying that they're now adding tire sealant just in case. This makes reasonable consumers think that the bike is built not just for tough terrain but terrain so tough you need sealant just to avoid flat tires which makes the intended use of the Lectric XP 3.0 all terrain.
