I've been buying motorcycles, atvs, side by sides, and parts from Kennedys for years. Great place, great people!

Janik Performance

Janik Performance

(1 review)

This is the story of how I believe Janik Performance cost me most of the 2025 riding season and…read morebrought me a lot of frustration and expense. Think twice before choosing Janik Performance to work on your Harley. I own a 2018 Harley Davidson CVO Limited. It had a Harley Power cam and Fullsac exhaust installed before delivery. Three years ago, I converted it into a trike using a Roadsmith kit. Over 39,000 flawless miles, all non-warranty service was done by Fox Cycle Works, who've worked on my bikes for 20+ years without issue. Last fall (2024), I wanted more low/mid-range power and chose a Cycle Rama 480MT cam. Fox declined the work because their dyno doesn't accommodate trikes and didn't want to install a canned tune. I found Janik Performance in Elyria, who had a DynoJet 250 that could handle trikes. Mike Janik, the owner, assured me it was no problem. Originally, I wanted a cam, high-flow air cleaner, and tune. But Mike upsold me: HPI throttle body, S&S intake, Rocker Lockers, lifter cuffs, larger injectors, and more--pushing the quote to ~$4,000. I paid up front for parts. Mike also offered to pick up the trike from Fox, where it was in storage for winter and waiting on a 40,000-mile service. That was Dec 3. I expected the work done by Christmas. But Mike didn't even pick up the trike until after mid-January, and only after weeks of excuses. Then came more delays--missing parts, a broken stud, illness, other bikes needing work, and at one point, he bricked the ECU trying to load a tune and had to get it reset at a Harley dealer. I always had to call for updates--he never called me first. In early May, he said the trike was done. I paid the balance and he returned it to Fox, who completed the 40k inspection and tire change in a week. When I picked it up, it stalled repeatedly. Once I got it moving, it began throwing engine codes halfway home. The trike no longer recognized the rear cylinder fan or the trike-specific flash that Harley had installed. At home, I confirmed the radiator fans no longer kicked on. Codes showed overheating and rich fuel mix. I also noticed an oil leak. I called Mike, asking him to take a look. He picked it up. A few days later, he claimed it was only "half full of coolant" and had Harley reflash the ECU. He also found the oil leak--a "hairline crack" near the drain plug, which he blamed on overtightening, presumably by Fox. He offered to JB Weld the crack. I declined. When I picked up the trike, it still ran rich. I took it back to Fox. Their mechanic immediately found severe damage: the entire front-left corner of the oil pan was caved in, with a 3/32" hole leaking oil. It looked like it had been ground down with a wire wheel. It wasn't a stress crack. I had Fox replace the oil pan, which took ~3 weeks. When I got it back, it still lacked power. I contacted Fuel Moto, a respected HD performance shop, and bought access to their tuning maps. After entering all my component info, they sent me a map, but the bike wouldn't start. Their tuner, Lucas, asked for the dyno tune file from Janik. The file said my trike had a 124" engine (it's a 117) and no upgraded injectors, which I had paid for. Lucas built a new map based on what I actually had. The trike started immediately, idled smoothly, and pulled strong through the gears. Night-and-day difference. My wife and I were thrilled. But then, while trying to use my auxiliary gas tank during a highway ride, fuel sprayed all over us. At home, I found that someone had cut the fuel line and rigged a T-fitting with one leg open to the air--basically a spray nozzle. I fixed it myself, and now that system works again. Now, seven months late and $1,200 over budget, I finally have a working trike. I called Mike Janik and asked why my ECU was programmed for a 124" engine and why my injectors were missing. He claimed telling the ECU it was a 124" was a trick to increase fuel, and "oh yeah," HPI had told him I didn't need injectors, and he "forgot" to refund me. He offered to retune it, but I told him my trike would never see his shop again. Let me be clear--I'm not telling anyone to never go to Janik Performance. But if you care about your Harley, maybe think twice before handing it over. Disclaimer: This review is a personal account of my experience with Janik Performance in Elyria, Ohio.
