On a Saturday when you know everyone will be there getting their most famous hamburger they don't make them ahead and you can't call to order them. It has now taken more than 30 minutes to get a hamburger. I won't be back there not that good! read more

First time visiting this neat store and the first thought was that they certainly deliver on the "meat" part of their name, holy moly. A butcher case full of fresh meat with the guys behind the counter willing to cut you off what you need, a refrigerated case of meat and a freezer section as well. Beautiful looking cuts of just about any standard game and plenty of ready to go, pre-marinated steak tips, barbacoa, etc. While we were there, quite a cast of Bath locals (blue collar, yuppies, families) were coming in and ordering burgers, which I thought they were getting raw to cook, but apparently someone was out back grilling them to order. They also have some beer options, dry rubs and barbecue sauces, chips, etc. And in this regard, they have tough competition at the kitchen store up the street, but I would definitely go out of my way to get some meat here, without a doubt. We drove from Scarborough to Bath, to explore the wonderful little town. Before going, my husband had found out about this butcher shop, so we stopped in. Let me just say that, at first glance, I could tell it was quality. There was so much to choose from, that the decision was a difficult one. I finally eyed two small New York strips that were perfectly marbled, and just the right size for two meals--1/2 pound each (we're not huge consumers of beef). We bought a couple of other items, as well. Bottom line: it is the most amazing steak we've had in a long time. We have a very good butcher here in Portland, but this was one step better. Run, drive, fly--however you can get there--just do it. Yes, they're a bit more expensive than what you'd pay at your local market/grocery store, To say it's worth it is an understatement. I don't know if we're supposed to describe a butcher shop as welcoming, but this one is very welcoming and well stocked. And the guys behind the counter REALLY know their stuff when it comes to preparation, the amount you need, and making sausages and other products. One day we watched as a young lad & his older brother talked their mother into letting them take home the biggest steak in the display case-- to cook as they envisioned from the Food Network with plenty of amiable and helpful advice from the store's owners. (The mom gets props for supporting such an experiment). We've been in there with people of all ages and backgrounds as customers-- they all seem to go away happy. As noted, we're a few visits in so we have had the delicious opportunity to try an array of Kennebec Meat Co's products. It is so nice to have meat that tastes, is beautifully cut, and thus cooks up well. Their merguez sausage and the other lamb products are delicious. The chipotle sausage was a big hit in our trad Mex tasting household. The ribs turned out perfectly-- dry rub and wet sauce. The steaks are consistently delicious-- we have a particular fondness for the boneless NY strip, as do our guests. Boneless chicken thighs tasted great baked with apples and onions as well as the basis of a soup. The comfortably crowded store is stocked with a variety of sauces and other enhancements to your meal. Theirs is the best prosciutto I've found in Maine- it even freezes nicely. While we remain committed to 14 meatless meals out of every 21, we love having the option of spoiling our tastebuds with purchases from Kennebec Meat Co. read more

Top marks for this shop across the board. Attentive and knowledgeable real butchers to talk over your needs. They can break down a whole side of beef with ease and expertise. (The 'butchers' you see in your local supermarket are seldom worthy of the name and work with small cyropacked packages, and most of what is in their cases comes to the supermarket pre-packed for retail.) For example, when I learned to buy ground beef, I was taught to ask for a top-round steak and then ask the butcher to "trim it well and grind it twice". The folks at the meat counter at my local supermarket will no longer do what they call "custom grinds". Support real butchers like these folks. It might be slightly more expensive than the chain supermarket, but well worth it to know where your meat is coming from. Final tip: try their in-store smoked meat products. read more

My wife and I are from the Boston area and come to the Bath region for our summer vacation. We felt forlorn when we found out that the Beal St. Barbecue was closed. We drove by and saw that the storefront was taken over by Kennebec Meat Co. So we went in to check it out. They were incredibly friendly so we decided to dip a toe in the water and try their own made hotdogs. We left with a small purchase of the hotdogs and some very interesting ketchup. The next day we grilled the hotdogs and they were really good. So a few days later we decided to go back to get some steaks to grill. We have had some decent steaks from some of the specialty meat providers in the Boston area. None of them came close to the taste and tenderness of the Sirloin for my wife and the Ribeye which I had. Wish we lived closer. I would buy all of my meats from them. read more

I work in Bath and get their daily pre made sandwiches to go for lunch at least 3-5 days per week. They rotate daily and every one that I've had has been delicious and I have yet to be disappointed. Some of my favorites/highlights have been their Meatloaf, BBQ Pork, Chicken Salad, and Mortadella. Standing shoulders above the rest though has got to be their Saturday Smashburgers. I almost wish I'd never tried them though as it has ruined all other cheeseburgers for me they're so good. The only thing I find more impressive than their sandwiches and the quality of their locally raised and harvested protein is the passion their employees continually display for their craft. Everyone from the owners to the cashiers to the back of house staff display a true love for their trade that comes through in their interactions with customers and their products. I dream of the day when all businesses switch to a local community based model like Kennebec Meat Co! read more
