Pastries galore, fresh baked cakes, pies, etc., then you have shelves filled with chocolates, candies and sauces, jellies, etc. My husband and I are so glad to share this fabulous find! The schnitzel was good, lightly breaded not deep fried. I ordered the German Franks and pleasantly surprised by the taste and size. The plates were filling, mine came with potato salad. The Schnitzel had spaetzle, cucumber salad which was great. I also tried the pretzel stick with something caller the Annie? Cream cheese dip along with some house rye bread and butter. They have fountain drinks. We took home a slice of German chocolate cake i forget the exact name but at $6.75 the slice was tiny and the taste was dry and not as good as we had hoped. Food was extremely off putting, the jager had American gravy, the mushrooms looked disgusting. Like they had been fried off to the side and thrown on top at the end, wrinkly and withered away. I have been dying to eat at Kempner Brick Oven for over a year now. My brother has been coming down to Kempner Brick Oven with his friends for years now every time they plan a trip around Gatesville TX. I've only heard amazing things from my brother and his friends about how amazing the German food is here at Kempner Brick Oven. Well now I can say that they are 100% right about what they said. This Saturday I finally got the chance to eat at KBO (Kempner Brick Oven). It was also my first time ever to try German food. I will tell you when you first walk inside KBO you will be met with the smells of nicely baked bread and German food. It was the type of smell that was comforting and gets you in the mood to eat. Even though this restaurant/bakery is small we were able to fit in 6 of us at one table. Once we were seated we were greeted in a timely manner and ordered our drinks. I had the 12oz Erdinger Dunkel. The Erdinger Dunkel had a similar taste to Shiner Bock which is my favorite beer. I would recommend any selection of their imported bottles of beer for your meal. When the time came to order our meal I was excited on what to get since everyone else was ordering Schnitzel and I wanted to try some sausages as well. I settled with the Rahm Schnitzel but was hesitant because I really don't like pork because of the taste/texture. You also get three sides with your entree which is a salad, a starch and a vegetable of your choice. I chose the cucumber salad, sauerkraut, and almost went with the potato salad but got the herb butter spätzle instead (the waitress also recommended the spätzle). Once my cucumber salad came out, I ate every last bite of cucumber that was in my bowl as well as finishing off my brothers cucumber salad. The salad was refreshing with the dill and the crunchy cucumber accompanied by the white sauce. It gave my mouth a cool reset before the Rahm Schnitzel arrived. Once my meal arrived I was greeted with a similar smell that reminded me of fried mozzarella sticks/chicken parmesan even though Rahm Schnitzel is not even close to those foods. The overall look of the schnitzel with the paprika and garlic cream sauce paired with the spätzle was fantastic. I took one bite of the schnitzel and fell in love instantly. The texture, breading and meat tasted amazing and it reminded me again of eating chicken parmesan. The breading was light and the pork was tender and not dry and easily paired with the paprika and garlic cream sauce. The herb butter spätzle was like eating a denser version of gnocchi, which is my favorite type of pasta. The flavor of the spätzle was amazing when paired with the schnitzel. Also the sauerkraut was really good by itself and was served warm. Did not mind at all if the sauerkraut was warm. Just letting others know if they expect cold sauerkraut. After this meal nothing was left on my plate. Every last bite was enjoyable and it expanded my pallet on what it means to have amazing German food. I was impressed with the small intimate atmosphere decorated with German decor as well as Kempner Brick Oven's food. If you haven't tried German food before, this is the place to go to. I would drive hours just to eat at Kempner Brick Oven. It is well worth the drive! I will have to give Kempner Brick Oven a 5 star review since it exceeded my expectations, gave me a idea of how amazing German food is, and provided a great experience. I am looking forward to coming back with my brother and our friends and maybe trying out some bakery items! I ordrred a cake to find out 2 days before picking up it was lost. When picking up the cake, prices have gone up considerably, a special order cake in the last year and a half has gone up 200%. What was once $35+ tax is now $70+ tax. I will not longer be able to afford their whole cakes, but others might be able to. I am unable to comment on how much their menus have or have not gone up. As a native German I can tell it is every thing else than authentic. We got burned Schnitzel and the cucumber salad tasted like seasoned with glutamate, which made me sick. Another day I bought cake , it was old and moldy. Then another time I met with my friend for a cup of coffee and we needed to yell to each because the staff had nothing to do than joking and laughing loud in the guest room, instead going to their brake room. And you better do not ask for the "restroom". The toilet is old and so low , you can cover your ears with your knees. No inviting ambiance. As a guest you sit just next to the line of customers, just coming to purchase something. read more

This restaurant has lost its way. I will not be back. I've come here for many many years. The staff are not wearing any type of protective masks in the middle of a pandemic. I guess they have decided that safety of their customers is not important. I went two weeks ago and they at least pretended to care with masks hanging off face or not fastened at all. The customers all had masks on and you could see people being uncomfortable with wait staff coming close with no mask or talking over the plates of food they are carrying. My meal was inedible, the seasoning on the garlic spaetzel was so strong it over powered meal. Bread served to table was at least a day or two old, so tough my mom couldn't eat it. Nearly all of the sides are directly from a can or frozen food (pea salad, cabbage etc.) Also, they have Fox News blaring on tv in dining room and Trump stickers at register. So, I have been taught throughout life if you're gonna bitch about something....find the good points and compliment about them before you complain. So, good.... They have a nice bread selection....they have really attentive staff....good prices. Ok.... Here's the bad, being German, I have a good idea of what's good, my mom had a restaurant years ago at the K.C. Hall in Killeen. And literally grew up on daily German fare. I had the bratwurst plate, at least that's what I ordered, and the poor thing looked worse than a limp rooster. Cabbage that had soooo much vinegar in it, my lips puckered like a frogs butt. My dinner was truly awful. Wife had the meat platter, looked good on the outside, inside meat was tasteless and maybe a bit stale(old). I hate writing reviews so negatively, and rarely do so, but I had to say my piece. Maybe it was a bad day at the restaurant, could've been the chef was not well. And I only went once. Wanted some Bavarian food and was not disappointed! Went in on a weekday afternoon and place was past lunch rush so we got seated and served quickly. They have a full service bakery with a case of incredible sweets. We ordered the rouladen and jagerschnitzel- both with spaetlzle. Both were very well done and the homemade noodles were excellent- nice texture and seasoned well. Service was prompt and attentive. The red cabbage was also very nice- tangy and crunchy. We got a variety of desserts to go and all of them were excellent. Also- the bread with meal was of typically high quality Bavarian baking. You will not be disappointed! read more

I've been going to the KBO for over 30 years. My grandparents lived around the corner and my grandpa drank coffee there every morning and would bring me pretzels on the weekend. Ownership has changed many time and it seems its current owners don't care much of customer service. I try to stop by every time I am back home and my parents get me florentines every year for Christmas (by the way, big complaint that florentines are special order only now). I stopped by today and was there between 10-1030 and wanted to order quite a bit of savory food, pastries, and pretzels. As the server was taking my order for schnitzel sandwich, rahm schnitzel, and multiple sides a women walked up and tapped the screen and said (sort of) quietly, "Not until 11. I've told you that before." She didn't say anything to me, didn't apologize, nothing; just continued reprimanding the server. When I said, "Oh no, I'm from out of town and wanted to take a bunch home" she just responded with, "Not until 11." Then she reprimanded her somemore. It was ridiculous. The woman was rude, unkempt, and unprofessional. I just don't understand turning away business - especially in these times. Lastly, they've seemed to move away from may of the German cakes, pastries, and such for cookies that you can get anywhere. Sadly, change isn't always good and this is a perfect example. read more

My wife and I have a combined nine years living in Germany. We try to frequent the Brick Oven at least once a month. The gypsy schnitzel and Jager schnitzel are our go-to meals, but everything else we've tried has been outstanding as well. We travel pass here a few times a year and decided to stop and try it for dinner. It was a great experience. The dining room is not very big, but the staff works hard to try and accommodate everyone. The food was great. I had the sausage plate and my wife had the schnitzel along with sauerkraut and red cabbage. All of the food was very good. Plus good German beer. In addition there is a bakery with a great assortment of pastries, cakes, pie, and bread. We look forward to returning. read more
