Have come here a few times now and can confidently say it's my favorite kolache spot in the area! The sausage bacon jalapeño cream cheese is a must on every visit, probably the best kolache I've ever had. Really makes me wonder why cream cheese isn't used in more savory kolaches. Outside of that one they have a wide selection that has consistently provided hits when I try something new. The bread quality is really good, and they don't skimp on the meats either. I will say their savory quality is a touch higher than the sweet, particularly on the bread, but the sweet are also quite good and have a crazy array of options. I think this spot is super overlooked and is well worth giving a try. I've never run into a line here so if you're tired of waiting at other close by places I'd highly recommend driving the extra block to give this spot a try read more

Must visit. Been through West for kolaches a million times, but never to Gerik's until recently. It is my new go-to. Everything is bigger. The variety of flavors is impressive. I preferred the link kobaslek to the ground one, but both were good. The restaurant/bar on the inside look cool. The best cinnamon rolls in Texas are here!! They are HUGE! Lots of flavors to choose from, creative combinations or original yummy ooey gooey delights! So this is also a pizza spot... but I'm here for the cinnamon rolls! I stop here every time on my drive from Waco to DFW. It's also a cute decor spot with old nostalgic gas station items. Staff is friendly and has been there through 3 generations! They also have kolaches, and yes they are better than the "other" ones in the area. Tip: you can get day old containers of cinnamon rolls or kolaches at half price! Still yummy after a quick heat up. read more

I have been dropping in for years. We eat lunch or dinner also when we are passing by. I started back in the late 60's when I was in the service. Back then and now West is a great place to just enjoy this town. If you get off of 35 and go deeper into West you will enjoy the wonderful people and the places to eat and have a drink. read more

Quick review. Each of these places in West are top notch. They each have good service (even though they stay busy), good food, and tons of selection. It is purely a personal preference on which store you like most. Gerik's is unique in that it has a bunch of other bakery items such as humongous exotically flavored "cinnamon" rolls. We knew that we had to stop by a Czech bakery of some sort on our trip to Texas and a friend's coworker recommended this place over the other franchises that generally pop up after a cursory search. And I'm glad we made a stop here! The parking lot is a bit small and parking can get tight, especially the fact that they're pretty popular and share a space with a pizza joint next door (and there's a taco truck in the lot). When you walk in you can immediately see the huge collection of sweet and savory baked goods that they have on display and the selection is MASSIVE. Much more so than many many other bakeries that I've been to. When they say everything is bigger in Texas, they weren't lying. There are ALL sorts of kolaches here if that's what you're looking for, but there's also other classic baked goods such as cookies, cinnamon rolls, and other Czech baked goods too. I didn't get the names but they're these flaky triangular pastries and one that is pinwheel shaped. They also have deals on day old baked goods, $5 for an entire box! Good stuff. We got a good mix of a bunch of their pastries, sweet and savory, to the point where a group of 5 couldn't finish everything. They have a microwave there to heat up your pastries too. The sausage ones I remember being quite good and I've never had a "skunk egg" before and I think it's a kind of egg salad with bacon, ham and other meats. Pretty good. The fruit ones were not too tart and the sugar cookie one looked cute and fall themed (albeit a bit too sweet for my liking). We pass through West often, and have always stopped at another bakery for kolaches, but decided to try Gerik's this time around. They have a terrific selection, and everything is BIG. They have sweet rolls as big as a human head. There is also a wide selection of flavors of each of their products, and pastry varieties I hadn't encountered before. The parties tasted very good (though I still prefer Other Bakery), and the prices were lower than I expected, given the size. The down side was that the center of the sweet roll was doughy - a risk when baking something so large - and the sausage/egg/cheese klobasnek my husband got was a lot of bread before getting to the filling. So much carbs to love and choose from in a cute cute little place that needs your business and support. Sure our party of thirty got stares from the locals. We were a good lookin' bunch! But the staff made us feel more than welcome and got us well fed. Czech Stop is my usual go to, JUST around the corner is no longer the only bakery with panache in little ol' West, Texas (just outside of Waco). They for sure got some competition ! This establishment resoundingly has trounced them in the carbolicious department. Pizza (check) Cinnamon buns (check) Super Star Country Service (check) Non tourist (check) And if that all makes you happy get this...day old cinnamon buns, etc, go on special. Box em up baby! As a former NY'r pizza and the crust are deal makers or breakers AND I'm pleased to say THEY GOT IT RIGHT. 5 stars for all that AND cool air conditioning as we visited during the 100 + degree heat wave in July. 1 less star only as the place was super clean but accessibility and the ramp to a work around area for the women's bathroom was creative as best. This was my first time at Gerik's and my husband's second time... he had visited once before when passing through West, TX at the recommendation of a coworker and raved about the kolaches so we had to try it together. This will be a must-stop for us any time we are passing through the area! We traveled to the Czech Republic a few months ago and Gerik's is even better than some of the kolaches we had there! Cookies & Cream Cinnamon Roll (9/10) - WOW! I think this was the biggest cinnamon roll I've ever seen in my life! Massive is an understatement but once you start eating it, you're happy it's so big because it's delicious! There's cookie pieces and the icing throughout the roll in addition to the topping so every bite has that cookies and cream flavor. We heated it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds and really enjoyed eating it slightly warm. Ground Sausage and Jalapeño Klobasnek (8/10) - I think they accidentally gave us a plain ground sausage instead of the ground sausage and jalapeño because we never tasted any jalapeño but it was delicious nonetheless! The dough is so soft and has the perfect texture. The ground sausage filled the entire roll and you got some in every bite! Blueberry and Cream Cheese Kolache (9/10) - FANTASTIC! Again, the dough is perfection and the cream cheese paired so well with the blueberry. The crumble on top added a nice texture element and additional sweetness. I think I said "mmm" with every bite I took! Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookie (8/10) - I didn't take a picture but this cookie was also massive and delicious! There were SO many chocolate chips throughout the cookie and it was nice and soft. The chocolate chips were melting as soon as I touched the cookie so if it's hot, you will want to eat it quickly! They were busy and didn't have many staff members working so there was a little bit of a wait but it was WELL worth it! Super affordable too! First stop on a Sunday was great, got 4 kolaches, 2 sausage cheese kolaches and one apricot Sharla..I think it was? All fresh and delicious, especially the apricot. Service awesome. On my way back to Austin on Wednesday, got two sausage kolaches (highly recommend the ground sausage) and because the Sharmas were so good, I got a cherry and a strawberry. When having the sharmas later that night, the first one was a bit stale, not at all like the one Sunday. The second one I cut in half and wondered what the green specks were? Strawberry stem? Then I realized it was mold, pretty disappointing. I think they may have sat since Sunday? I'll go back, but I'll be cautious and ask questions. read more

Yesterday, I took my mom on a 'Kolache Tasting Tour' to West, TX in an effort to bring back some childhood memories of eating her Grandmother's kolaches. Trip was successful! We sampled fruit filled kolaches from Slovacek's West, Czech Stop and Gerik's Ole Czech Bakery. All the bakeries were "Mom/Grandma/Great-grandma approved" (my mom - Czech ancestry), but the Gerik's Ole Czech Bakery experience was our favorite. In addition to the delightful kolaches, what topped the cake was the quaint atmosphere and customer service. It was busy, but we didn't have to stand in long line like the other places and there is plenty of seating. The presentation in the box was also more attractive because the kolaches were positioned in the box where you can see the fruit. (Not crammed sideways (Czech Stop) not sure which flavor is which). We also placed an unexpected large order to dropped off at a first responder's facility in San Antonio. The order was promptly completed. The folks at the facility were delighted when we delivered the treats! While you're at Gerik's, grab a pizza! Six hour drive (round trip) from San Antonio area was worth seeing my mom enjoy the various kolaches. read more

I stopped at Gerik's this weekend on my way back to Austin and was very happy I did. I got the sausage, bacon, jalapeño, cream cheese pastry which honestly wasn't really my cup of tea just because there was SO much cream cheese in it. I also got a lemon cream cheese kolache which was fantastic. The pastries here are ridiculously cheap as well. Glad I found this little gem! I can't say I fell in love with the kolaches but my gosh YALL the "cinnamon rolls" are as big as your freaking head! I got a strawberry shortcake and Italian cream. The Italian cream was not good, it tasted like plane cream cheese was globbed in the middle, we ended up throwing it out. The strawberry shortcake was a different story!!! We fought over that one. It was soft and gooey with just the right amount of strawberry and frosting. I don't think Andrea the Giant could have eaten one of these by himself!! The reason for 4 stars is the atmosphere was DARK and the employees seemed to want to anywhere but helping customers. It was not inviting at all but dang those rolls!! Their dough is soft and pillowy and the filling isn't super sweet either which creates one of THE best kolaches and rolls I've ever had. The dough is an enriched dough, eggs and butter, similar to my mom's Easter bread. Whoever is making these knows what they're doing and I applaud them for it. Well one time we gave up because the line was so long, a short drive took us to Gerik's and we were so glad we went in. Unbelievably yummy with a creative variety. They have few poppy seed choices, their specialty giant cinnamon rolls (some without cinammon so maybe not called cinnamon rolls) in various flavors are so good. They often have multipacks on discount (day old). This is also a pizza place, I've never had their pizza. I recommend the apricot kolaches they also have pinwheel type pastries. I think Gerik's is known for kolaches, but we stop here for cinnamon rolls. They are massive and so many different flavors. The rolls are delicious. Soft with a generous amount of icing. The prices are also great. Two cinnamon rolls, a cinnamon twist, and a fruit kolache for $13. A few suggestions would be to improve the lighting in the bakery case. The bakery itself is very dimly lit and there are no lights in the cases, so it's hard to see everything. The staff is also not overly friendly. Not rude, just not super welcoming. read more

Most folks know about the other bakery as it's located right off the highway, however if you travel slightly off the highway, you will thank yourself. I was drawn to the building due to the meat market sign only to find out that it was closed and a donut shop was opening soon, but I decided to go inside the bakery for a "look, see" . . . And it had me asking myself WHY haven't I been here before?!! I got 3 items - all with strawberry - and it came up to $7. However the strawberry roll, or any of the others, should not be eaten by one person. Seriously it weighs like a pound . . . And sweet! Everything we got was delicious & some of the locals who came in gave it two thumbs up. They have a small sitting area so you can sit down and enjoy your items. If you want some GREAT Czech baked goods this is the place. Found it one day by mistake driving around after going to the tourist trap on the corner. They goods taste like gramma just made them. Nice big pastry with large amount of filling in them. The cakes, strudels, heck everything is hands down better than any other place in town. They are now in the building with the pizza place, but still have that great flavor. Some of the younger girls seem to be underwhelmed about working , but I come for the good. Disappointing experience. On one end, the pastries were stale and not fresh. The meat-filled ones were cold, almost frozen. Wasn't given the option of having it heated up, so it was essentially inedible. Also, most customers and employees were not wearing masks. The few that were did not have them on properly. My husband and I went in to enjoy the Kolaches we had heard we're so delicious, and they were. The service was horrible though, so disappointed in the server, she brought our drinks and appeared disappointed in the fact that we were only getting Kolaches. On 2/15/23 at 1:45pm I made a slight detour on my drive back to Dallas from Waco. Along the way I found a Heaven blessed bakery - Gerik's Ole' Czech Bakery in West, TX. It was quiet when we arrived with only a handful of diners. A friendly server jumped up quickly to greet and assist us. I concur with other reviewers - the interior bakery/cafe' lighting is dim, but maybe they're trying for a calm ambiance. The bakery cases would be much improved with some internal lighting. So, be ready to pull out a trusty hand held computer and use its light source to get a better gaze at all the scrumptious morsels behind the glass. I purchased one fresh baked cinnamon roll (friend requested). The rolls are the size of a dinner plate and it was only $5 (+ tax)! I also bought a package of four, variety flavored rolls that were on the day old baker's rack for a total of $5 (+ tax)! Unless one is truly starving or just a greedy gobbler, those rolls are a shareable treat. I enjoyed a generous portion even after cutting each roll into four equal pieces (Once home I flash froze two of the four rolls, then wrapped in 4 layers of food film and placed into a heavy duty freezer bag to enjoy another day). Even at a day old the rolls were soft, had plenty of delicious filling and icing on the top, and tasted fresh. The photos show my friend's boxed cinnamon roll, and the package contained two chocolate with brownie top rolls, and two toasted coconut pecan rolls. Every bite was delicious! Dollars stretch a lot further getting items from the baker's rack without compromising any flavor. The day before I tried kolaches from the gas station Czech Stop. Those were okay but not great, too much sugar on top of the center filling was noticeably grainy and way more than necessary, kind of gross actually. I have high expectations since the first kolache I tasted was as a kid in the center of KS at an After Harvest Czech Festival. They made fruit and cheese center kolaches with the perfect amount of dough and old world sweetness - not too much, not too little. I'm hoping Gerik's will live up to what I've had in the past. I'll be sure to add reviews once I try their kolaches. I do NOT regret taking a side journey to Gerik's. However, I do regret not trying one of their kolaches too, but they've been added to my bucket list for my next trip to the Waco, TX area! read more

What to do on a Saturday morning? Who's up for an hour drive to West, TX? This place is very tasty. They have so many cinnamon rolls, kolaches, and fruit kolaches it can be a bit overwhelming. But the promise is that it is well worth the drive and the one you choose is going to be great. No regrets! The only thing is we showed up around 1030am and they were sold out of Gingerbread cinnamons rolls and selling out of other rolls and pastries. Darn those locals who don't need to drive an hour. :) It looks like all their choices are made daily. We wanted an oreo and wedding cake cinnamon roll, which were not available today. Stopped here on the way from Dallas to San Marcos, and again on the way back home. The pastries were divine. I had a cookie that was a bit dry for my preference, but still delicious. The kolaches are huge, the breading is soft and yummy. My hubby and I are still working our way through the box full that I brought home Sunday (today is Tuesday!). I can eat only half at a time. They are quite filling, even my chubby hubby could eat just one for his lunch. Delicious! I will definitely stop there again. I'd like to try their pizza! read more
