Recently went here after we were super let down by some meat we'd gotten at the grocery store. We called ahead to check on the availability of the cut we were looking for and they found some for us! Cooking the short ribs side by side with the grocery store ones were night and day. The ones from Kelso's had a ton of meat on them and were awesome, and the ones we got with our groceries were anemic and sad, and had hardly any meat on the bones. We aren't even going to risk it next time, we'll just go straight to Kelso's. They were all super friendly, answered our questions, and even answered my toddler's questions about the machinery used! Seems like a group of people passionate about good food and great service. We'll be back for sure. read more

On a recommendation, I made a dedicated trip to Snohomish, which was my first time there, to try Jakes Café. Heard it was a great breakfast that was superior to Maltby Café which is considered a destination location. Post meal, I decided to see what else the area had to offer before leaving and thanks to Yelp I came across Kelso Meats. I am a big smoked meat fan. I have driven all over the state to sample in house jerky's, pepperonis and sausages. The kid here was super cheery and helpful. He suggested the peppered Jerky, Landjagers and Hot Links. When I asked about Hot Links, which by the way is my absolute favorite smoked item, he said people can't take the heat, so their links don't pop. In my book a Hot Link is a Hot Link and you shouldn't call something, something it's not. That would be liked calling your beverage Sweet Tea and the tea has no sugar because people don't like their tea sweetened. So here is my review. First thing I tried was the jerky and it was actually spicy, it had a kick and good flavor. Unfortunately, the jerky was really tough and hard to chew, they probably need to smoke it less time to keep it from drying out. Next, I tried the Landjagers. Good flavor, no better or worse than any other I've sampled. Last was Hot Links. No heat whatsoever. You might as well just called it a peppered brot. The flavor was ok, but overall, a big letdown because the product does not match the description. The nail in the coffin here was pricing. No question I have paid less for better, but the real issue is this is without question the most expensive meat market I have visited in all of my travels. Jerky was $60 per pound. I like a spot in Issaquah for great jerky and on my last visit all varieties were about $22 per pound. In general, flavor was fine, but the pricing here makes zero sense. Good chance I'll return to Snohomish, very unlike I will return to Kelso. read more

Nice little butcher shop with great quality meats. This place is not large. It's not the best butcher shop I've ever used by a long shot, but it's good. The beef quality is superb. And they have a variety of their own sausages and of more exotic meats (frozen). Rabbit, etc. These small butcher shops are disappearing. Snohomish is fortunate to have this one. Melts in Your Mouth! That is the consensus for Kelso Meats! If you are from Snohomish, you already know just how great their products are. If you have not been in there yet, dash in right now! What I love: o The quality is fantastic across the board (oh...no pun intended!) o The variety is just as terrific! o Their product knowledge and customer service? YAY!!! o Not only is this truly a family-owned business, but they are also great members of the Snohomish community, how cool is that? I have lost track of all of the different items we have bought over the years, but our two must recent were delicious! The brisket was perfectly trimmed for the maximum flavor and turned out, even for an amateur like me, FABULOUS! Again, they were happy to give great suggestions and tips that make the customer into a culinary hero! Last night we tried a couple of their hand-seasoned, signature burgers, the blue cheese, and the cheddar ones...delightful!! These 1/3 lb. darlings actually STAY pretty close to the same size when cooked! Clearly, there is not a ton of water dumped in. And they remained incredibly tender when grilled! Kelso's is awesome! Love their lean and extra lean ground beef. Their staff is always super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly.

I would not normally give them even a one star but they did wrap the meat. A whole beef cut and wrapped but I am not sure that anybody who knows how to cut meat, cut this. The hamburger is the only thing that one is able recognize. The steaks are strange. Rib steaks look like anything but a rib steak, All steaks are cut by someone who has no idea what a steak looks like. I have had a lot of beef and bison and pork cut by different shops but never any thing this bad. I would have to think this was the persons first attempt, and did not even have a picture too have any idea of what they should look like. There is nothing period that was done well except the hamburger. Will never use them again and would hope that others may have better luck than we did. Or maybe you should use someone else. Picked up some beef ribs three days before the 4th for a bbq. Night before(Saturday) as I was about to prep them I noticed they were brown and had a rancid smell to them. This was two days after I bought the ribs and they had been stored untouched in my fridge. When I attempted to get a refund today I was told because I was not able to return the rotten ribs(which I obviously threw away) and not kept them in my freezer for their vendors to see I would not be able to get a refund and was offered a gift card worth half of my purchase. Would definitely recommend elsewhere and will not be returning here. read more

Still will never go again. I bought a 1/2 cow from a local farmer & that's where they had it butchered. I didn't have a choice. They gave me 16% fat in my hamburger I asked for 12. A couple of years ago I purchased a half of grass fed beef from a local farmer that didn't give me a choice on where to have it cut and wrapped, I usually use silvanna meats or del fox, they always do a good job. First I don't believe I got what I paid for, the weight of the cut meat didn't seem right for the hanging weight. Second, the cutting was sloppy and uneven, loads of fat, which you don't expect from grass fed. Third the meat tasted so rancid, like they literally rubbed it all in poop and wrapped it, that tells me the cow was under high stress when it was killed as you can taste it in the final product. I was severely disappointed and will never use them for this service again, I almost feel like they switched cows on me because part of the reason I bought from this farmer is because I had tasted the beef he produced before and it was excellent. This led me to not even want to eat red meat for the longest time it was that disgusting. I do not recommend these guys for any processing. read more

Over the past few years we've purchased 1/2 a hog which was processed here and 1/4 cow more recently.... Plus various cuts here and there. With the purchase of a share, we've definitely had some cuts that weren't ideal.... But overall we've been super happy with the products. I believe for whole hogs/cows you can make cut requests - for a quarter we couldn't make requests but had an impressive variety of cuts. Polite service on the phone and in person. This place has a strong family-run-small-town feel to it. They know their breeders very well and have answers to any and all questions. read more

I spent 67.00 plus change for 2 of the very worst rib eye steaks EVER! Costo is always solid 100% the best. So I decided to give them 1 more try. I bought 6 packages of chuck hamburger. I make dinner , grill the burgers , and there is paper in the meat. I throw them out at 6.99 per lb. I call them and they reply "Oh we leave paper on all our ground meats!!!.And I tell them that will never happen a second time. I will not waste any more of my money on their poor quality control, and very bad customer service. read more

We ordered 1/4 beef from a local farmer, and it was processed by Kelso's. It seems like the more we've eaten, the less happy we are with the butchering. We got about 135lb of meat from 230lb hang weight, and some of the cuts still had a ridiculous amount of fat that wasn't trimmed off. It was bad enough that my husband has questioned if they gave us the wrong cow (grain-fed instead of grass-fed) because there has been so much fat. My husband has also pointed out how poorly the meat was cut multiple times. He has some training in meat cutting but not enough to know more than a butcher... They gathered our preferences for cut and wrap but then ignored all but one request we made and had to be reminded to give us the liver we'd requested. The plastic between steaks is annoying as another reviewer mentioned. The ground beef has an obnoxious amount of bone fragments and cartilage in it. We picked out over a dozen pieces from a 1lb package today. We got no skirt or flat iron from the 1/4 beef. We'll be trying a different farm and butcher next time in hopes of having a better experience. read more

I was very pleased with ease of ordering over the phone, pick up and payment outside today. I was concerned however around one (the only one of many employees) I witnessed coming out to cars to deliver and obtain payment with no mask. If that had been my contact I would have been upset. That everyone else appeared to be adhering to Covid standards, I can only assume that one was being petulant. But I also wonder why the business did not reign that in, for optics at least. read more

I wish being a Snohomish resident, that we had a high quality meat shop in town, but unfortunately Kelso's just doesn't fit the bill. When I purchase beef I wish to know where it came from, and if it's 100% grass fed. Same with pork, and I want to know if my chicken is free range. When I buy sausages I wish to know the ingredients, primarily is there sugar? These are questions Kelso can't answer, I was told to just assume all the sausage had sugar. Hmmm. A larger amount of consumers care about the quality, ingredients, and raising of their meat more today than ever, I wish Kelso's would get with the times and be able to provide potential customers with this information. For now I'll continue to drive elsewhere to meat shops that can answer my questions. read more

We had our pigs butchered here a few months back after having not such a good experience with another butcher. These guys were professional, caring and did a superb job with the cuts. Our customers, who picked up their pork there, also gave us very good feedback. I was just needing to call them to have them come do a couple more pigs for us and realized I had not written a review. Shame on me. Then I see someone give them a one star for not being organic. Seriously? No where, anywhere do they label their facility as organic as each producer (me) feeds our animals differently. It is a shame for them to give such a poor review based on nothing they did. Try a couple simple steaks or bacon. Once you do, you will never want to go back to grocery store meat again. I'm not sure what has changed over at Kelso's but this experience has caused me to look elsewhere to process my game. Dropped a small whitetail deer off to get cut into a few packs of steaks, 1 roast, burger and 25lbs of pepperoni made. Got a call to come pick up my meat and there is no burger at all. So I chose to have the steaks and burger grounded up because my family eats more of that than anything else. Kelso Meats then proceeded to ask me to pay another $100 on top of the $240 I've already paid to cover their mistake. Keep in mind that all the scrap meat that should have been used for burger got tossed at this point. Finally the gentleman agreed that I shouldn't have to pay, shocker. Finally get a call the following week that my burger is ready via voicemail. I call them back with a couple questions and some other guy tells me my balance due is $90. At this point I've decided that I will find somewhere else to go to because they obviously have issues tracking who's paid what and who owes what per order. Which then begs the question if I'm even getting my meat that I've dropped off. Finally I get everyone on the same page and go pick up my burger. Still have the pepperoni to pick up so I'm hoping that happens without problems. There was no offer of compensation or discount for the problems with processing my deer considering they wasted meat, created a hassle for myself and their business and messing up my order completely. read more

We have been going back to Kelso's off and on for various meat needs. Yesterday, we had guests and went to Kelso's to get some meat to grill. The really friendly guy directed us towards the rib steak, cut us two 1-inch slices and gave directions to not overcook. Once we got the meat home, sprinkled it with the McCormick's Montreal Steak seasoning (my go-to for meats), and then grilled it to medium/medium-rare. It was sooooo tender and flavorful and juicy, my mouth is watering as I'm typing this. The folks at Kelso's are always very friendly, they've never steered us wrong, no pun intended. read more

I went to Kelso's because I received a gift card. I was excited to shop at a different meat shop. I purchased a couple beef tenderloins, a couple chuck roasts and some hamburger. I cooked one of the chuck roasts in the pressure cooker to have one of our favorite dishes. It was very grissly, not at all what we are used to. The beef tenderloins we purchased looked more like sirloins. The worst sirloins we have ever had. They were tough and hard to chew. I'm not even going to try the hamburger. Needless to say I won't be back. I will continue to go to DD Meats in Mountlake Terrace. I noticed that some reviewers have not been to any other butcher shop. I recommend you take the drive to DD Meats. You will not regret it! read more

I admit, I've never been to a true butcher shop! Now that I am working in the Snohomish area, which is a wonderful farming community, I went to Kelsos to purchase some meat. It was wonderful! I bought hamburger as well as some spicy Italian sausage. The sausage was amazing. I'm going back to buy more this week. SO good! Must keep some of that in the freezer!!! The hamburger was lean & great. I probably won't buy these things in the grocery store again. I need to try other meats now that I've tried those two & we were so satisfied with the quality. Overpriced. They charged me $23 for a small pack of soup bones. Imagine my surprise when I found the same amount of bones for $5 at Safeway and Winco. All I needed were bones to roast for marrow and/or bone broth. I will not return. read more
