a half eaten sandwich

Kelsey's Pizzeria, 1954 U.S. 1 Rockledge, Florida 32955- 1-Star (Chain Restaurant Rating) The original Kelsey's Pizzeria & Eatery was founded in 1983 in Titusville by a local guy, Nick, as a small local family business. Having considerable success, he franchised a few other Kelsey's throughout North Brevard. This particular franchisee on US-1 in Rockledge has a second on North Courteney Parkway in Merritt Island according to its website. Additionally, you can find a couple of other Kelsey's in Port St. John, and Cape Canaveral, if you are so inclined to check them out. Assuming they are like this one, I'm not. How many different boxes of pasta and pizza dough exist through purveyors? Countless, I'm sure. It's always the same. Most likely the least expensive. Hence the reason Italian restaurants become more and more tedious. No one makes their own dough and lets it rise overnight anymore. I don't care what anyone tells you. Fresh homemade risen dough would cut into the margin, meanwhile pizza remains the highest profit food item in the world next to bottled water. Many a stoner and those among the zaftig couch-potato set will tell you that all pizza is good pizza as long as it's smothered in cheese and pepperoni and delivered to their face. Not for this guy. At the Rockledge location, we were met by a pleasant server named Hayley who got all my inside comments. Something I often find lacking in a waiter. As usual, however, despite a direct request to box up my leftovers, she declined. So, I asked her who typically boxes up the take-out orders. She confessed, well...her. Yeah. Not the greatest of all time. The menu here was not diverse, just your typical Americanized pseudo-Italian fare. I ordered my baseline Fettuccine Alfredo, my point of comparison for evaluating the level of any ristorante's pasta game. Kelsey's fettuccine compared poorly. It literally had zero taste. Not even the creamy taste typically associated with Alfredo sauce. Alfredo di Lelio, owner of Alfredo on Via della Scrofa in Rome, who lovingly invented this dish of fresh-egg fettuccine with butter and parmesan--Fettuccine all'Alfredo--to nourish his pregnant wife in 1907, would be rolling in his grave. My second choice from the menu was a meat calzone with sausage, pepperoni, and ham. It was a dismal wreck of food. The calzone bread was the Sysco pre-rolled ball one thaws out and massages. The ingredients would have to have been stepped up to even be considered crappy. The Big Boy says, "Between ugh service and low-grade ingredients there are SO many better pizza options in Brevard. Skip the Kelsey's in Rockledge."

I suffered this so you don't have to. For $7.50 they took A store bought baguette Soaked it in oil and salt Threw cheese sliced on top Heated it. Terrible by any measure.

Pepperoni, and Kelsey's Deluxe, and Greek Salad for 2!

I also got a mini salad which was big enough to fill me up before I even started on the calzone.

But someone left a small table and they cleaned it and i sat. Server came over pretty quickly and said he'd be with me in a minutes. However, 10 minutes later he's cleared 2 tables (no one waiting to sit) and cashed out another check-all of which could have been done after taking and putting in my order. But, okay, nice guy and no real harm done. I'm just tired and cranky and hangry. Got a glass of Cabernet. I don't know why. This isn't a fancy restaurant and the wine tastes like it. Figured it would help me go to bed early for the race but first i have to be able to swallow it. Still, my fault, why did i order it in the first place? Stick with water soda or beer. Ordered mussels which apparently you can get in a white or red wine sauce. Missed that on the menu but i went with a white wine sauce. Also got the gluten free 10" pizza. So they both came out at the same time which is as bull because now one will get cold as i eat the other. I told the server that the mussels were an appetizer. He said they took a while because the shells wouldn't open-not a good sign considering i have an early morning and food poisoning won't help. The mussels were bad. I ate them, being a fat hungry man, but they were dry, the sauce was not flavorful, and half the shells were still closed. Now, shockingly, the pizza was very good. One of the better gluten free crusts i have had anywhere. I was sure i would take one bite and just give up but no. I really enjoyed the pizza. Weird. So I probably would have gone 2 stars for the bad, but friendly, service and awfully timed serving and awful tasting mussels and wine. But i have to go 3 for the pizza. And really, what am i doing ordering mussels and wine at a strip mall pizzeria? I must have lost my mind. Should have been pizza, and maybe soup or a salad. Might have been 4 stars if i had ordered with an acknowledgment of where i was. So, if you are gluten free, come here. I wouldn't if you are allergic or have celiac disease-there is surely cross contamination. But if you just don't like getting bloated and uncomfortable, you will enjoy the pizza.

Service: We walked in and were told to sit wherever, we wanted outside but it was too dark and the tables were dirty. We decided to sit inside so we could see each other and our food. We waited 10 min for menus and listened to employees argue over whose table we were. NOTE:(I counted between cooks, servers, etc... 11 employees) once we got menus we ordered drinks and food. While ordering pizza we were told that all toppings cost extra. So the advertised price of a pizza was cheese only. Kinda of disappointing to not include a topping or two for that price. We ordered an appetizer that took approx 15-20 min to come out and then the pizza followed shortly after approx. 35 min. We weren't offered drink refills until after our pizza showed up. Once our food came the waitress seemed a little more attentive with drink refills and asking how our food was. But overall the service was disappointing. Food: The appetizer we ordered was deep fried ravioli with marinara. They tasted like they were frozen and the centers were lukewarm. On the plus side I did enjoy the marinara but wished there was more of it. Once the pizza came it was over cooked, lacking toppings and the cheese didn't go all the way to the crust. The dough tasted like it could've been great if not overcooked but I can only go off what I got. I'm sure this place does well with tourists as it's near that area of cocoa beach but my wife and I will not be going back for the above mentioned reasons. It's a shame when you can get better pizza from a chain type place.

Marco's Pizza got its start in Oregon, Ohio back in 1978 and in the decades since, Marco's Pizza has grown to over one thousand locations since then. That in itself is pretty impressive. Think about it, when Marco's Pizza first opened, disco and punk rock were new musical styles and "National Lampoon's Animal House" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" were new movies in the theaters. I bring this up so you can realize how long Marco's Pizza has been around. They definitely have some history. As I said, Marco's Pizza is a national pizza chain and compared to other national pizza chains, Marco's Pizza is definitely enjoyable. If you are craving pizza and you are in the area, I would definitely recommend this particular location of Marco's Pizza. People have been enjoying this pizza back when disco balls were the ambiance in nightclubs and people were laughing at John Belushi was making us laugh and Steven Spielberg had us looking to the heavens in a different way. They have quite a bit of history, so they must be doing something right.
