Tomato basil soup and garden salad.
Ray K.

Dinner then a movie. We shears enjoy ourselves wheN we come in. Our regular waitress was talking to another table so she didn't get us. However the other young lady was awesome as well. Our other server even had small chat with us. Chris and I had the drink special. He had the French onion soup and chickens salad sandwich. I had the tomato basIl soup with the garden salad. Watched the debate and the game. Good energy as usual. :) be back soon !!

Tavern chili. It tastes pretty good.

The service was good. The food was delicious and hot. The fries could have been not so over cooked but other than that the place is a good spot to eat in.

a beer and a television

Good food but I had a fly in my beer bro, like wtf . My homie also spotted a roach crawling in the cut so tbh kinda turned off. But I'm keeping it G and enjoying myself so shouts out to my bartender for being cool.

Bourbon burger! It's a 5 napkins stack of awesomeness

Great local tavern w/ HUGE burgers!!! Don't pass up the sweet potato fries! They even have a good kids menu.

Wedge salad - with old lettuce

What has happened to this original location?! We used to come here all the time years ago when I worked in the area. You were always guaranteed a great burger and friendly service. Not anymore it seems. I was longing for a big juicy burger for lunch, and since we were in the area, I figured we'd stop in. First, don't sit in the booths. Just don't. They used to be cozy, now they're just downright uncomfortable. It's like sitting in a church pew and the "cushions" are so worn out, you feel like you are leaning forward into the table. Hubby and I agreed that our server never smiled....not one time. All of this I could have tolerated if the food was still as good as I remembered. Sadly, it's not. I started with a wedge salad, because I love them. It's pretty difficult to mess up a wedge right? It's usually just iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, crumbled blue cheese and dressing. Here's the thing, you need to start with fresh lettuce. This looked like it had been sitting in the walk-in for a while. And it was....just bland. Not sure how that can be with the blue cheese, but it was. Hubby's comment was "Meh." Kelly's used to always be good for cooking your burger to order. I requested mid-rare for my bacon burger. It was not. Had I not ordered it that way, I'm fairly certain it would have come out as a hockey puck. It was way over. Hubby had the Philly. Weirdest thing ever - it seems they use the roast beef from the French dip? It was seasoned weirdly. At least it wasn't steak-ums. The fries were just ok. Hubby did enjoy the potato salad side because it reminds him of his favorite - that he buys prepackaged in the grocery store, so enough said there. So sad that this is not the Kelly's I used to love. There are far better restaurants in the area. I doubt we'll give this one another try.

Came here as a third stop on a day of bar hopping down Colley with some girlfriends. I have never been to a Kelly's before but I was pleasantly surprised by this one! It is quite small, but there was a table outside large enough to fit all 9 of us. They had an awesome happy hour with $1.75 well drinks! There is an upcharge of $1 if you want any juice mixed in, so I decided to just stick with a simple rum and coke. The glasses are smaller than average drink glasses but it is definitely worth the $1.75; the drinks were a little on the strong side, but we didn't mind haha. Food wise, my friend ordered the crab dip with pita chips and I thought it was very tasty. Came out very warm and with the perfect amount of pita chips! It always bothers me when a restaurant serves way too many crackers or chips just to cover up the little amount of dip they give out! But Kelly's definitely didn't do that so I was a happy camper. Per the same friend though, the fries are a bit bland and aren't worth getting. Lastly (but most definitely not the least), our waitress was absolutely wonderful! She went above and beyond to make sure that all of our drinks came out at the same time and even remembered what each of us ordered so that we wouldn't have to keep repeating ourselves if we wanted a refill. Definitely recommend checking out this Kelly's location to grab a few cheap drinks with awesome service!

This local favorite has maintained a loyal following since opening its doors in 1987, and after one visit it's easy to understand why. Having grown up in Norfolk, I still make the trip over from Chesapeake from time to time because some places are simply worth returning to. Our favorite bartender Lauren is always friendly, attentive, and helpful with menu suggestions if you're undecided. She also happens to make a fantastic drink, which certainly never hurts. My wife ordered the Sesame Shrimp Salad consisting of fried butterflied shrimp, organic mixed greens, fresh vegetables, mandarin oranges, crispy wontons, and their house Red Dragon dressing. The presentation alone was impressive, but the flavor balance is what truly stood out. In fact, she enjoyed it so much that I never even managed to get a taste myself, which is saying something. I decided on the Shrimp Platter and the portion size alone was enough to get my attention. The shrimp were fried to a perfect golden brown, served piping hot, and properly seasoned throughout. The crinkle-cut fries delivered that ideal contrast of crispy exterior and soft potato center, while the coleslaw brought a refreshing balance of sweetness and acidity that tied the entire plate together beautifully. No Frill continues to prove that you do not need unnecessary gimmicks when the food, service, and consistency speak for themselves. If you enjoy well-prepared comfort food served by people who genuinely care about the experience, this Norfolk institution remains well worth the visit.

Codex, its menu and its employees are wonderful…read more The Granby Street eatery is a cozy, welcoming space that combines modern and vintage decor. Because of the lack of street parking, my son chose to take a Lyft on our recent visit. It was a good choice. We were greeted and taken to a comfortable table. Service was prompt and helpful. Our last visit to Codex had been late January during Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week. But when I ordered my cocktail, telling my server my need for a cocktail straw, I was surprised at the answer. She told me that the bartender Addie remembered me, my cocktail preference and my need for a straw. I looked up and she waved at me. It felt wonderful that I has been remembered. The Vodka Martini was presented in the vintage glass so familiar to me. It was the pattern I inherited from my Mother & Aunt, so popular with the WWII generation. Addie remembered how excited I was when I first saw the glass. The menu was awesome as usual. We started with Oysters, Raw with a Citrus Mignonette. Also from the starter section we chose the yummy House Made Pimento Cheese and Everything Crackers. My entree was the Gnudi with Ramps, Chestnut, Black Pearl Mushrooms, & Asparagus in White Wine Lemon Sauce. My son chose the Tuna. Both were amazing with perfect presentation. We shared the Roasted Cauliflower, which was a culinary masterpiece. When time for the dessert menu came, my son first declined. But I remembered there was a choice that I can never pass up, When the menu arrived I was excited to see that one of my favorite desserts was still on the menu. Olive Oil Cake with Lemon Curd on the side, you are wonderful. My son first declined to share but decided to take a bite. And....that was all it took. He shared the entire cake with me. It looked so good that I took a bite before taking a picture. It was a delightful evening when I needed one the most. Both my server Laurel-Manette and Addie were welcoming and friendly. I promised to return with one of each of the many types of glasses in the vintage stemware pattern. The small one used for my cocktail was the only size they had seen. Laurel-Manette made my night when she told us that dessert was on the house. If you've never been to Codex it's a must go! There's nothing about it that I would change.

I am speechless. Some of the best dessert I've ever had, but like that doesn't even do it justice. I can't believe we've had Codex in our neighborhood for so long and I've been sleeping on it.
