I have seen and heard about Merritt Gallery since I moved to the area about year ago, but this was…read moremy first time going inside. It is an impressive, contemporary space with a very wide selection of art including wall and free-standing sculpture. When asked for prices the range was quite wide from $900 to $50,000 (yes, $50k). Given some of the pieces displayed and artists represented I imagine that range goes well beyond $50k as names like Picasso, Matisse, and Warhol come up on their website. The gallery has three locations and represents around 175 artists meaning that what you see in store is only a very small sampling of their actual collection. Though I always am looking for new pieces for my collection, today I went in to have a small print framed. Caitlin, one of their consultants, ably showed me an incredible selection of frames ranging from contemporary to hand-carved, hand-detailed wooden frames worthy of the Louvre and works of art in and of themselves. Having chosen to forgo a mat (not needed with this piece) and a fairly simple thin frame, the price caught me off guard: $216. While the financial part of my brain said "no!" the artistic side said "give it a try." I paid the fee and was told my print would be ready in about two weeks. Caitlin offered to have it delivered to me and installed which I may take them up on. Conclusions: Merritt is a great gallery and framing shop. The price lowers my rating to 4.5 stars (I'm a budget conscious art collector). The only issue I had was when Caitlin and I went upstairs to figure out my invoice she left my print exposed on a framing table. I didn't think much about it till I had left, but I wonder when/if someone went down and secured the print from damage. This lowers my ranking to 4 stars. Otherwise a good experience.

Probably why I don't have too much experience! I have a concert poster from Dead and Company that is very dear to me, it was a great night celebrating my birthday with some good friends. Had another one from the Black Keys this year that also deserved framing. So I stopped into the Framers Market Gallery which happens to be right around the corner from me to get some ideas of what it would cost...I am SOOO happy I did! Aileen(sp?) was working the counter and she is good at her job! So glad I went with her recommendations! The Black Keys one she figured out quickly and I'm very happy with it! She looked longer at the Dead and Co poster and ran a couple ideas past me...I'd never have thought this, but she suggested I use 2 frames!?! A blue one on the inside, to pickup the blue from the poster, and a black one outside, which would match my other artwork. I wasn't sure how it would look when done, but liked the idea, and it was actually cheaper with 2 frames than using matting... Think it took about 2 weeks and I was so happy with them both! The Dead and Co poster just blows me away, I love it! It was also cheaper than my previous framing experiences, so double the recommendation! Thank you Aileen, I'll be back with more!

I loved my experience there, I haven't been there recently, (but I enjoyed it pre-covid). My only criticism would be the lack of pricing on most items. This place offers a variety of classes and i can speak for the Beginner Jewelry class with Dawn…read moreBergmaier, since i'm taking that right now (winter 2012). the bottom line is that the class is great and i'd recommend taking it. the class teaches you "design layout, piercing, forming, basic construction, filing, soldering, coloration and finishing." i've also learned pickling, annealing, riveting, and print rolling (onto metal, of course), and that was all in just the 5-week course! there's a standard 11-wk workshop but i wanted to try the shorter one just to get my feet wet and see if i liked it. if you take this class, don't forget your earplugs! there's lots of hammering going on. no prior metalshop experience was required, and although i've worked in both wood and metalshops, i still learned a lot and it's also a great class for total n00bs. one of the best things about the class is that you get to learn the foundation of jewelrymaking and techniques for working with all the tools. the other cool thing was that the class size was small -- it started out with 8 ppl but dwindled down to 5. after Dawn gives her demo, we repeated what she did and then had the freedom to make pretty much anything we wanted to. it's great to be able to put things together with the techniques that i learned. Dawn was always helpful and open to any questions or ideas we had. She also explained things well and really poured out a lot of knowledge. i guess since jewelrymaking is metalshop on a small scale, they don't need floor machines like a bandsaw or a drillpress. instead we use handsaws and the flexshaft (which is really ideal for working on small pieces). the equipment seemed pretty well maintained, except for the jeweler's bench pins. the only drawback for me is that since it takes 1.5 hrs to commute there from center city Philadelphia (via SEPTA), and another 1.5 hrs for me to get home, i've been resorting to eating "dinner" on my walks to class from Haverford Station. the walk from Haverford Road to the Art Center has no sidewalks and is barely lit so that in some parts, i've been using my phone as a flashlight and have been carrying a huge, bright yellow bag to be more visible to passing cars. also note that if you take the Norristown High Speed Line to get there from 69th Street Station, you pay as you leave (not as you enter the NHSL). i didn't know that the first time and thought it was a free transfer! If it wasn't so far, I would def take Beyond Beginner Jewelry, and perhaps some other classes here.
