Disappointing on many levels. When asked what she recommended the waitress replied "McDonalds". Nice. We stopped for lunch on the way to Vegas from the Bay Area with our 2 kids 7 and 4. We ordered breakfast. Mt rye toast was like a piece of particle board. The eggs were eh and the home fries were terrible. The place is OLD and feels it. Not in a quaint way either unfortunately. I really wanted to like it here but sadly it did not happen. They do have a cool back story and cool items scattered around the restaurant to look at. Photos and nick knacks. It all looked dusty and dirty. A great candidate for Diners, Drive Ins and Dives if the food was anywhere near being yummy. Oh well. Skip it and try the Apple Shed. read more

This place just screams "I'm home" granted I may have spent my childhood in Tehachapi but that doesn't mean that this atmosphere isn't still as welcoming as ever. For such a little town it has quite a history, and Kelcy's is the best place to sum it up over some great comfort food and old time pictures. I have family out there and its like the staple, we don't have much of a "main street" but if we did this is on your way. A very sleepy little diner which I must agree seems like something out of an old movie which makes a visit with say the grandparents a must here. Enough about the atmosphere, lets get to the food!! This may be comfort food but damn do they know how to serve it up well, I have seriously thought of there fish sandwich to be the staple of how one should taste since I was about ten and it has never let me down. Had a late start saturday to go to Fossil Falls about 30 miles south of Lone Pine. My wife hardly comes with me, this time she decides to go. I'm hungry, my wife tells me as we are close to Tehachapi. The bakery was her choice, after eyeing those signs near the freeway exit. We look for the bakery and end up driving to town. Didn't find it, saw Kelcy's Cafe - let's eat here. The moment we walk in, the front room reminded me decades ago decor and feeling. An old refrigerator on the east wall, the west wall full of photos of experimental planes. How about the food? Wifey ordered an omelet with some kind of pepper and hash browns. She liked it. I got a chicken fried steak with 3 scrambled eggs and hash browns. The chicken friend steak was a bit bland, I've had better ones at truck stops (and possibly not healthy!). The only factor that prevents me from giving this a 4 star - food was a bit pricey. Our meal for 2 with 1 soda, the above and biscuits and gravy totaled $27+ excluding tip. Decided to give the local Mom & Pop Café at try. How sad and pathetic this place was.....the service and food usually make us for the dirty unattractive ancient decor......but not this time. Service was terrible. The waitresses/staff have ZERO personality. They stand around and filling salt shakers or butter dishes while your coffee runs cold and dry. I saw 4-5 staff and 4-5 tables.....no one was getting service. One table just stared at the kitchen for 15 minutes until the food was ready. Food was overprices for what you get. Huevos Rancheros was placed on two greasy tortilla. Don't forget to ask for "butter on the side" with your toast..... or it will be in the same condition as the tortilla I just described. My wife and I have been coming here regularly for the past few weeks since they reopened and I have to say that we are very impressed with the food, service, and golden oldies playing in the background. Their prices are reasonable, staff is friendly and quick to keep your coffee topped off. My wife has to get the fresh squeezed orange juice everytime we come for breakfast. read more

Wow. We finally landed at this cafe after looking at the menus of a few restaurants on the same street. Same price points as everyone else, so we decided to stop looking and eat. The table was sticky, the high chair they brought me for my two year old son was disgusting. When I asked for the high chain to be cleaned, they handed me a wet rag. Completely ignored the kids menu and decided to share our food with my youngest because there is no way I'm paying $5 for a peanut butter sandwich. Price difference between a burger and a burger deluxe? Almost $3. Difference between a burger and a deluxe? The deluxe comes with a dozen or so fries instead of a small bag of potato chips. Bought a burger (that's the one with the chips), a burger deluxe (fries), and a double burger (same as deluxe, but two patties). Not big burgers. Frozen patties. Limp lettuce, a tomato slice, and a few slices of pickle on the plate. THIRTY BUCKS!!! Really wish I had known there was a Denny's about a mile and a half away. Gross. read more

This is an old school diner. Really great hostesses and good food. I've been here only twice while making the trek over the pass to Vegas but then again, I've only made the trek twice. It seems the locals come here to have some grub and shoot the sh*t. That's gotta say something if the locals continue to give it business. The only reason I'm not throwing it 4 stars is that with our last visit on 3/18/12, my wife's Reuben sandwich had a small amount of mold on the bread. She's a trooper and didn't even tell me about it until later that evening. I'm sure we'll go again but I'll be checking the food and let them know if it's not up to par. read more

Havent been to this place in a while, stopped in on our way to Vegas. It is like stepping back in time. I love it. I would call the food "grub" and by this i mean it is good. My wife and I had a taste for chicken today so we thought that we would come in to Kelcey's. We were greeted immediately by our young waitress who was very friendly and welcoming. She took our drink order and it was brought out quickly. My wife and I both ordered the 3 piece boasted chicken for $12.95. The food came out quickly but one of my sides the fries were cold. Our waitress apologized and got me some new fries. My favorite side is their potato salad. Outstanding!!! Our waitress and the entire staff were very friendly and I'm looking forward to our next visit. read more

Iam a fan having gone here over 35 years. However, bad news is she is closing on the 21st! My personal fav is fried broasted chicken. I order the sides, like 3 chicken wings. Always the same thing including a pint of cold slaw. Therein lies the rub today. I ordered the usual 1 pint to go and got less than one cup in a small container.. When I went to pay, I was told that was a pint! Really. Even after showing them a pint is 16 oz (like cottage cheese) and the quart is 32 like a quart of milk, even the owner disagreed. Chicken was great. Sorry they are closing. Wonder how she cooked so long not knowing 2 cups is a pint??? Missing them already though. read more

I don't recommend for the price and the food you get. My son had scrambled eggs and French toast and hated it. There was something either wrong with the syrup or the batter for the French toast because it had a funky taste. The sandwiches had very little meat on it for the price of $9. I'm a 65+ rancher from the mountains nearby Tehachapi and have been going to Kelcy's for years. I have never been mistreated there or had anything to complain about with their food. I don't know who all you yahoo's are that are giving them a bad review, but maybe you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth and not used to good, old fashioned, down-to-earth food and service. Kelcy's has been sort of an iconic restaurant here in Tehachapi for years, and mainly for that reason, they are still around. Their food is not "bad", far from it. But its not something you couldn't make at home. My husband had biscuits and gravy and I had french toast. The gravy had flavor, not too peppery and not too bland. My husband did not care for the biscuits, saying they were too thick and not fluffy. The french toast was good, but like I said, not something I couldn't make at home. The staff were friendly, but I did notice that they paid FAR more attention to their "regulars" than they did us, being our second time there. The wait time for our food was, in a word, obnoxious; almost an hour. We were one of only three parties there at the time. I don't believe I will be going back unless I'm really hungry and its right there. read more

Horrible service from the moment we walked in. We were ignored then told to seat our selves after five minutes. We sat down our order was taken along with drinks. Our server was friendly but not very attentive. Our food took over an hour to come out from the time we ordered. We were just getting ready to walk out when our server brought us refills, then informed us our order will be out less then five minutes so we stayed. We honestly just had frozen food warmed up. I should give this place a five star rating based solely on their small town charm. Kelcy's has ads of local business on their menus. There is this old timey clock that looks like when it worked it would rotate ads on the hour. Most of the rating here goes to place and its staff. I love it when little old ladis call me sweety or darlin. And they do that here. The food is fine, nothing uber mega awesome, but filling. I'd come back for the charm. I'm mixed about this place. I'll try again. The food was pretty good. Eggs cooked well done how I like nothing worse then a scrambled runny egg. So this place was good. I felt though that the customer service was really only geared towards regulars. We sat ourselves and weren't greeted. And I had to ask for silverware when she brought us our food and asked if we needed anything else.she did seem embarrassed by it. So once the food came it was made well and came pretty quick. His patty melt was cooked very good and he loved the potato salad. I tried it it was very tasty. So I shall try again. Maybe we need to be regulars here ? To get greeted right away? Coulda been an off day. But the food will make me come back again to try this place put for a second time. read more

Great breakfast spot. Has a real small-town vibe going on. The staff is awesome. I have to give a shout-out to Megan, the best waitress ever. I called about a week ahead of time to let Kelcy's know that around 30 of our car club members would be rolling in for breakfast. No problem, they set up the back room just for us. A nice mom and pop diner in a quaint small town. I had bacon, eggs, hashbrowns and a biscuit with gravy. I wish my biscuit was larger to match the amount of gravy i had to go with it, but I'm sure I didn't need it. My daughter had a pancake and bacon that was tasty as well. The wait staff was gratious and the bathrooms were clean, which is important when traveling. I won't complain about the price because i know running a business is not cheap and i have paid more for less soooo..... We gave this place a try for the first time today and wanted to love it. Sadly, we won't be going back. First, we noticed the lack of selection on the menu (what breakfast place doesn't do omelettes?) The home fries/potatoes were completely unseasoned and tasted like burnt grease. The strange thing is we didn't even order home fries. All four of us ordered hash browns. I assumed the potatoes were their version of hash browns and didn't say anything, but later noticed actual hash browns at other tables. The scrambled eggs were flat and crumbly and contained little pieces of burnt potatoes as though they were made on a dirty griddle. The restaurant wasn't very busy, but no one came and offered refills or checked in with us, except once when someone came by and filled a coffee cup we weren't using with coffee we didn't order, but were charged for. They did take it off the bill when we pointed it out though. The people seemed nice, but unfortunately that's the only positive I have from our visit. read more
