Gibson St. is one of two artisan-ONLY markets in the entire city: if it was made in China, then the artist is also Chinese. Great food, great people, great craftsmanship and selection. Better pricing than a department store, especially when you consider you're getting a ONE OF KIND creation, and most artists will customize on the spot for you at no added charge, if they can (depends on their art; some just can't)... Get THAT kind of service at Walmart! I am proud of the people I work with: all do great handmade and Austin-only goods! How could you miss the bright open space that begs you to come closer. It's not a huge space, but it packs a punch with the amount of items they have over a few hundred square feet. All of the displays were attractive. The store was super clean, no dust in sight any where. Such a variety of items, some related to the museum but many not. They also had an items that are a little harder to find such a ACME pens that I collect. Even nice designer clothing which I have never seen in a Museum store. A specific children's area is nice, but not large. Many prints, books and even some glass wear. I was just in love with the variety of items. I did not end up buying anything, but may have if the staff person had even shown the slightest bit of interest. This is the only reason for the downgrade to a four. She barley acknowledged me and after browsing a good 15 minutes never came out from the counter and reading her magazine to ask if she could help. Hopefully she is not representative of the rest of the shop staff. In my opinion this is one museum shop that should be be missed. However, when passing it was always enroute to an event at the Capitol, or other times they weren't open. Really glad I finally made it. As mentioned, it's not a bakery though it once was. In fact a Swedish bakery called this 1876 building home for nearly sixty years. Once inside, you're able to learn about Austin's Swedish immigrants (as well as others) by viewing an exhibit from the Lundberg Maerki collection. There's so much interesting history, it's just fascinating. The art gallery houses ever-changing exhibits. These exhibits all have one thing in common, the artists are over 50 years old and are local to Austin. The gift shop is more like a collective of artisan/handmade goods. Here you can find one-of-a-kind items. Things like paintings, jewelry, postcards, handcrafted gifts, etc. The artists & craftspeople selling their wares are also local. A lot of items sold here are also created by folks over 50. They have an outdoor patio space with a large mural. This is a nice place to visit whether you're local or a tourist. I will definitely go back again, especially if looking for a unique and special gift for someone. Support the arts. Support local artists. Support senior artists.

They had the novel idea of finding used and old frames and matting and framing art for relatively cheap. I once paid $200+ to frame a piece of art at Michael's - NEVER AGAIN! You supply the art, they work with you to pick out an awesome used frame and then you pick it up in a week or two. They have taken on specialty work, framing a huge piece of art for us that now hangs in our bedroom. The owners are young, creative and very friendly. For an average sized poster frame, you can walk out here for under $40. You are welcome.
