If you've never eaten here, it's a must. The prices are a bit more than your average sushi place but you get what you pay for. Normally I'd never give 5-stars because nothing is perfect, but Keiichi is close enough that I'm dishing out the 5th star. The menu has a base menu with other items that change on a daily basis. I've been twice now and the first time there was octopus and the second time there was smoke salmon. The smoked salmon, K does himself and is excellent. Not your over powered smoke flavor like the smoked salmon you're probably used to, this is very mild on a slice of fish that just melts in your mouth. In fact, all the sushi/sashimi I had is melt in your mouth wonderful. The service is outstanding here as well. Being such a small place, there are only two girls waiting tables so you get personal attention. If you are lucky enough to sit around Keiichi's station you can even ask him questions and chat with him while he works. I took my wife the second time I went and spent about $50/ea. Not bad for having 4-5 rolls, a tenderloin steak that is one of the best I've had w/ truffle mashed potatoes that will make you ask for more. Honestly I haven't eaten anything here that I didn't like. A good selection of alcohol from domestic beer to Japanese sake and beers. I believe there was some wine as well. Overall, if you like sushi and want the best around, Keiichi is the place you need to try out. Make sure you call to make reservations though, you will not get a seat if you just walk in. I thought the food was good overall. The beef tatyaki and beef and jalapeno cream cheese roll were excellent. Loved the tiramisu. I'm not sure it worth the huge price tag, but I'd definitely eat there again. We also had issues with our reservation, so I'm taking a star since the reservation issue made the evening more stressful than it should have been. read more

Let me sum it up for some Comment Readers: if you got in (i.e. your reservation worked as expected), you are to be extremely satisfied because the food is - undoubtedly - GREAT. But if, by some bad luck, the owner "does not see your reservation", you are going to be extremely disappointed and/or angry. No, there is no elitism, or racism, or any other "ism" there; they can only sit 10 people and it is not a "walk-in" restaurant. And no, they will not apologize for misplacing/losing your reservation. The place is a tiny hidden jewel, with a fantastic Japanese chef and bad customer service. So... Ah hell, I could tell you how amazing this place is, but you wouldn't be able to see me salivating as I do it. This place is the BEST sushi place in Denton.. I can even go as far to say it's some of the best sushi I've ever had, and I've had A LOT of great sushi. Everything is fresh, the menu is revolving, and it's unique. The building is small and discreet.. You wouldn't even know it was there if you were not told by a local. The chef is skilled in both Italian and Asian/Sushi cuisine. Reservations are required, as far as I know. YOU MUST GO. & finish with the Tiramisu. You won't regret the money spent. read more

Insanely good. I've eaten Sushi in a bunch of big cities on the East Coast, and none of them have been as good as Keiichi. We told the chef to bring us whatever he thought was best, and his picks were perfect. The tuna with avocado was especially amazing. This is the best Japanese restaurant I've ever dined at, and I've done some good ones. Three warnings: 1. This is not a place for you, if you don't already like Japanese cuisine; 2. It is expensive. If you eat well you'll be luck to get out for $200 per person (worth every nickel.) 3. Reservations are difficult to obtain, don't try a walk in, it's small, one counter, sometimes they use the bar area, but you can't assume they're expandable. This was my second visit to Keiichi, and it was even better than the first time. I was lucky enough to be seated next to a family with a similar profession to mine who were fun to talk with. EXCELLENT waitress, friendly chef, and fantastic food. I started with clam miso (best I ever had,) then I ordrered an "appetizer," Tasmanian sea trout in a citrus/ginger sauce, wonderfully delicious; my second plate was a roll with avacado and snow crab, (excellent); I had the sake "flight" sampling three sakes, all good, but not junmai daijinjo; then I decided to end with the tuna/avocado dish with threadline veggie (didn't ask name.) I want to go back soon, but live over 200 miles from Denton. it's a great experience. No downside to food or service. read more

Nammi food truck comes to Denton, and on top of that we can claim one of the best sushi restaurants in Metroplex (and, I might add, one of the best I have eaten at in the U.S.). Plus, we got a new Starbucks. The urban sophisticate lifestyle I have long craved is coming into view for Denton, Texas. OK, so back to the review. Sushi is super fresh. I have lived in Denton for 7 years now and for some crazy reason I had never heard of Keiichi before. It is definitely the hidden jem on Denton with its cozy atmosphere and one of a kind experience. Kei, the owner, is your own private chef and cooks right in front of you. We had about 10 different things on the menu (all of which were AMAZING) but my favorite was the filet. It was the best steak I have ever had by far. All in all, it was an experience I won't forget and I can't wait to go back. Book in advance though, it usually takes a month to get a reservation due to the limited seating! Its worth the wait though!! read more

Don't think of this as a restaurant - it's a Sashimi Studio. The only negative reviews focus on the lack of service, but this is not your American, let us be your servants kitchen; it's a sashimi master's art studio and you should show some respect. I did the Omakase - basically just letting Kei (the chef) prepare for you whatever he wants. This is the best as he'll guide you on a journey of the freshest fish and the finest preparation. I have not had better sashimi. Call at least a week in advance to make a reservation and know that the bar seating does not get a good view of his workstation (normal seating is front-row). He's also closed on Mondays - I believe it's because they don't fly fish in on Sunday. read more

This is the best sushi restaurant I've ever been to (and I've been to a bunch). The restaurant is small with very limited seating and reservations are a must. Keiichi (owner/chef) works and prepares all the food in front of you behind the sushi bar for a very intimate dining experience. I've eaten here quite a few times and my favorites include: the spicy tuna roll, the squid sashimi, the tuna sashimi, the shrimp salad and the beef tenderloin. In addition to being a sushi chef, Keiichi also specializes in Italian cuisine. As a result, he has an eclectic menu which changes daily based on the ingredients availability and freshness. He also offers a variety of Japanese beers and sake (sake flights are also available). The service which includes Keiichi's food preparation and the waitresses serving beverages is excellent. The outside of the restaurant (an old beauty shop) is definitely nothing special, but inside is warm, inviting and comfortable. Although this is a Denton restaurant, the last couple times I've been, most of the customers had driven from Dallas. Food-5 stars, Service-5 stars, Ambiance-5 stars, Value-5 stars. read more

This was the best sushi experience of 30 years, having had sushi all over the world! Wonderful fresh selection, inventive sauces, fantastic, friendly, upbeat service, great sake! Loved every bite. We don't usually have desert but that was good as well - black sesame ice cream and banana Cake. Especially loved the chef's choice of Salmon belly, Yellowtail, Beef Tataki, Unagi, Spicy Tuna, Peppers, and a taste of my husband's Pasta. Yes, Pasta! Chef Kei is Italian food trained and it makes it nice that there are options for the non sushi people in the same party. Sit at the Sushi bar and enjoy the husband and wife team! There isn't much seating in this place and the outside of the place does not look nice or inviting. We got the beef tataki, which was decent but overpriced. For our entree, we tried the snow crab & avocado roll, which seemed so simple that you can make it at home. We also tried the spicy tuna roll, which was very bland...overall, the sushi was very boring. Not much taste to it, especially if you like sushi with lots of ingredients and sauces on it. You're paying for it to be expertly crafted by a live chef, not the flavor. The location is extremely small, so be sure to make reservations! read more

OH - MY - GOD!!! I've eaten a LOT of sushi and sashimi all over north america, and spent a bundle in the process. Little dsid I ever expect to find the VERY best in a north Dallas town in the heart of BEEF country! While there, my wife (back home) did some googling and found this as the #1 rated restaurant in all of Denton. Ever the skeptic, I went to try it out. Local knowledge proved spot on: extremely difficult to spot on a drive-by as it appears to be an abandoned commercial building on a corner lot with nothing else around. I also had to go with a 5:30pm reservation as the night was totally sold out thereafter. Small wonder considfering it only seats 14 or so total. It was well worth the early arrival as we were the first. The sampler platter was spectaular. The highlight was the Tasmanian Sea Bass, which I'd never heard of, but it was delicious. I had to fight my daughter to get my fair share! Add two or three sushi rolls to round it out and we had a truly memorable meal. It was also extremely unusual to see the chef making up a "roll" using local beef, along with a small hand-held butane burner to finish off the meat! DO IT! Just DO IT! read more

When we arrived we were asked if we had reservations and we said no. The said they had two spots available. The hot sake was great and the sushi was even better. Went here a few days ago and it was some of the most amazing sushi I've ever had. Try the octopus, oh my goodness it was amazing. The sushi chef is very friendly, with a few hints for the less educated at eating sushi. This isn't your typical specialty roll kind of place. This is legit Japanese style sushi. I cannot believe I haven't reviewed this place because I have been going for years now. My friend introduced me to this place 3 years ago when I was leaving near Denton. He told me of this hole-in-the-wall place that only seated 11 at the sushi bar but also served Italian food. I know what y'all are thinking: "What kind of place serves sushi and Italian food?!!" It sounds strange but it really isn't- it is actually a great idea. Not everyone likes sushi so at Keiichi's, you can get Italian food (and who doesnt like Italian food?). Kei is a master at both cuisines. The limited amount of seats creates a camaraderie amongst foodies which is fun. The menu is also limited and changes daily. My favorite go-tos are the beef tenderloin and spicy tuna rolls (those are two separate entrees). The beef tenderloin is cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth, along with the mashed potatoes dressed with some kind of finishing oil (I think it is truffle oil) and string beans. I also LOVE the spicy tuna roll- I cannot eat this anywhere else. Kei's spicy tuna roll has something special (maybe chili sesame oil) but it hits all the taste buds, including that umami taste sense! My friend loves all the pastas, the kinoko mushroom pasta (very creamy) and the lasagna. Kei makes his lasagna with pieces of tenderloin, not ground beef. If you are in the Denton area, or not, you MUST try this place. I moved to Frisco 2 years ago and it is now a major outing to drive that 30+ miles for dinner but so worth it! And if you have enough room after you've stuffed yourselves with all that good food, try the homemade tiramisu. read more

Food is 5 star! You do not go to this place for the atmosphere. This is the best food I have ever had. I'm comparing this to Del Friscos in the metroplex and even better places around the country. This is the best sushi ever, but this place is also the place to go for 5 star Italian food. Do not let the outside of the building fool you. It may look like a sketch place, but the food is top notch and so are the prices. You may need to schedule your reservation a month out even for a party of 2. But it's worth it. I always feel bad for the people that walk in and expect to be seated here without a reservation. They obviously don't know how great this place is. But get ready to drop some cash. You can easily spend $200 on dinner and a couple of drinks for a party of two. This place isn't for the all-you-can-eat sushi bar guy. read more

We've been driving by this place for a few years now. The exterior is nondescript. It was an old hair salon, but now it is a Japanese/Italian fine dining restaurant. The place only holds about 20 people so reservations are required to weeks, even months in advance. By far, it is one of the top five places we have ever eaten. This is a place oozing with excellent food and service inside, but one that you could pass for years like we did without even realizing it was there. We'd heard about this place since arriving in Denton and finally got off our butts and called for a reservation. Though we'd been told that you might have to reserve a table (or seats at the bar) a few months off, we managed to get two seats at the sidebar (so not in sight of the sushi chef Keiichi) the night after the phonecall. We had a few apps, the sashimi plate, the cod roe pasta, and a couple desserts. To make a long story short, we'd likely skip the sashimi plate again, try another app or two, and most definitely do the pasta again. That is, the cod roe pasta was brilliant, absolutely unreal. We both were so impressed by it, and my partner is not typically into Italian food. To be very honest, we were not big fans of the fish for a couple of reasons: 1) having just moved from NYC, we're pretty accustomed to subtle forms of sushi (a la Namo in Dallas) so we're not used to Keiichi's preference for saucy dishes and 2) the cuts of fish varied in thickness (the roll next to us, as others that are imaged, looked rather sloppy actually though it may have been delicious). That said, we'd return for the cod roe pasta and likely another pasta or entree. We can't wait. read more
