My first taro fest in many years. This weekend we were in here for a wedding so we headed to the…read moretaro fest the next day. It was a hot and muggy morning. We got here at 9 when it first started and this place was packed. We couldn't even find parking nearby, so we parked up the street and took a walk down to the back park. Started if with the vendors they're selling arts and crafts, so many to choose from. They had a lot of food to to choose from something different at the tents. Then we sat under the tent and enjoyed the entertainment. Then the rain came it poured for a bit so many people came under the tent. It was a fun and exciting day. People are very friendly here. I needed a bowl for my dog to drink water and a nice guy gave me a bowl from his booth. I was very grateful

This was my first visit to the Taro Fest but definitely not my last…read more It takes place at Hana Ball Park. Parking is challenging but not impossible. The event runs from 9a-5p. There's entertainment, arts & crafts, a sort of mini-trade show, and of course food! The main star of the show is the taro. They have demonstrations on how the plant is prepared in many ways for food. FOOD: Taro Seafood Chowder Similar to a squid luau dish. Lightly flavored with a coconut-based soup, luau leaves, chunks of taro, shredded chicken, potatoes and carrots. Needed more salt IMO. Pokē Balls Chunks of unsalted ahi pokē wrapped in a cake noodle and deep fried. Drizzled with a mild wasabi cream sauce (even I could handle it being a wasabi hater) and orange-colored cream sauce. Had it not been for the cream drizzles, it would've been flavorless. Maybe if the ahi was seasoned it would've tasted better. Or even use tako instead of ahi. A bit pricey at $10 for 2 balls. Apple Snails Similar to escargots, they're farmed from the taro patch. I was so excited to eat this again as I haven't eaten them in years. Again, the preparation was very light on flavor. I believe they sautéed them just in its natural broth because there was no flavor other than the snail and earthy taro patch flavor. It was delish but wish I had some garlic-shoyu mixture to dip them in. There are tons of other foods to try, but I like to try things I can't get everywhere. TIP: Bring an umbrella because Hana can bake you during the day, as well as some salt and shoyu as the sodium content at most food booths are very, very low.

(5/5) Stumbled…read moreacross Ono Taco Truck and immediately knew it was about to be legit. You can just feel it--and yes, confirmed: actual Mexican folks running the place, so you already know the food isn't playing around. Everything was insanely tasty and felt super authentic. Like the kind of tacos that make you pause mid-bite and rethink every other taco you've had before. Bonus points for the sauce bar--lowkey my favorite part. Nothing like standing there debating life decisions while trying every salsa like you're on a flavor quest. Easy 5 stars. I'd come back again and again... and probably embarrass myself at the sauce bar every single time. Service took a little while because there's only one guy cooking but it was well worth the wait.

The car rental company receptionist recommended this area of food trucks to check out since it was close by. It was about a 15 minute drive to the food trucks. Our friends said they've tried Ono Tacos before in Lahaina. They said that the tacos they had were good! I was in the mood for tacos so I ordered one Al Pastor "Pork" taco and the Shredded Beef Birria tacos. They were both very tasty and I would say "on par" with tacos I've had on the mainland! I would go back again the next time I'm in Maui.

The food tastes clean, safe, as though someone is mindful of sourcing and preparation. The thing…read moreis, it's not consistent. I'll still support the place, but to really love supporting them even more, I have some friendly recommendations. I love the char on the meat, the salsas are great and were given to me cold (great sign! As unbelievable as it may seem, this simple step is missed in a lot of places!), the beans and rice with the sasoun like abuela used to make- chef's kiss! and even better than Ono tacos in Kahului in my opinion, and their beans and rice are pretty fly). The pollo and asada, one day has more flavor than the next. Some days, no salt at all. So if you bring a guest, just pack some limes and salt just in case, so they'll believe you when you say this place is awesome. Problem solved. Additionally, the comment about the fatty inedible bits of steak- yes, I have experienced it also, that is an anomaly that the chef should be able to catch. That's not ok and will turn a lot of people off from the food, please quality control or let the butcher know so you guys are getting value. Sometimes I know those fatty cartridge chunks can contribute to flavor because of the oils, but that can be done in a separate process and removed before plating with that primo asada. First visit I loved the carne asada tacos. Quality is very hard to find here on Maui, and once you find it, consistency even harder, but I really like this place so I'm coming back and bringing more folks. The marinade and seasoning was on point that first time. The second time, the beans and rice had wayyy more flavor than the chicken and the steak, just being real. I look forward to trying more. I bring guests here and they say the same things. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food, and I know food can be hard work, just iron out your processes so they're firme every time, make sure everyone working follows the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) and people will remember it for sure, the potential for even more greatness is definitely there, no one else is making tacos like this! just needs attention to detail. Also.. not to end on a bad note, but I've gotta say it- you -always- should provide or offer silverware to customers, and napkins. That's only proper form. The service and kindness of the young man taking orders is impeccable, he is kind and personable to people and you can tell he was raised with respect , has dignity and kindness for others. Well done! This is rare also and people notice. What a good bruddah! Thank you so much for your hard work and efforts. I live with constant pain. I don't always wanna cook, shop, marinate, and all the steps it takes to make an epic meal, unless I'm cooking for a lot of people I love. I can tell you're spreading the love with your food, I hope my honesty isn't harsh, I really want everyone to eat well and I want businesses to do amazingly. Gracias!

This fourth Friday celebration is bigger than the other Friday celebrations on island. They close down the end of Lipoa St. and have a ton of food options from food trucks to brick & mortar restaurants/cafes, one of which hosts a beer garden. The food truck lot behind Azeka's is opened as well which adds even more to the lineup. They also have a lot of different vendors from candies to apparel and different stores in the marketplace. They also provide a variety of entertainment throughout the night and you'll find people singing and dancing and just having a lot of fun. When we got there we immediately checked out all the different food options. There are so many that we couldn't decide! Naturally, we did like foodies do and went with multiple different vendors. We got a taco assortment from Horhitos Mobile Taqueria, some steak from Teppanyaki 2 go and for dessert we had soft-serves from Aloha Kettle Corn. The steak was a bust and definitely regret that decision. The tacos were pretty good, but they didn't have the one that I was hoping for. Aloha Kettle Corn, they just have the best self-serve ever so that's definitely always a good choice. There are tables scattered throughout the street so we quickly found a table and sat down. While we ate there was a singer playing in the background which was nice. If you're scared of bugs, don't sit too close to the street lights because there are A LOT of them. Overall, we had a really good time and I would definitely recommend checking it out if you get a chance. There is something for everyone and that's a nice option for something to do on a Friday night. For the tourists, this is a great way to get a little taste of different cuisines if you're short on time!
