We happened upon this place on our way to walk the local beach and hike. Apparently, it is a famous old-time cannery. They are not cheap. We got one can of smoked sturgeon and ate it outside. We wanted to see how good it was, so we could determine how much to buy for ourselves and as gifts. We went back in and bought 5 cans of smoked sturgeon, 2 of smoked salmon, 1 smoked tuna, and 1 regular tuna. They also ship nationwide. The sturgeon is special and not always available. The local Yuork Indian tribe are permitted to catch sturgeon, a protected fish, and if they have extra they sell to Katy's. So there are years where there is no sturgeon available at all. The fish does not look like your supermarket tuna, or even your Fishwife fancy tins. There are nice big chunks in the can. The smokey flavor is pleasant and the juices in the can are just from the fish--nothing else added. There are many comments from others about the disposition of the salesperson, and the price of the fish. It is true that on our visit, seemingly everything I asked about was answered with some kind of negative. However, he also offered a lot of historical and fishery source information about the product. If you had a fine food business, and people kept asking you why the price was so high, or other annoying things, you might be cranky too. In the end, he was glad to open one can so we could eat it outside. He gave us his sole plastic fork to eat, and packaged it so there would be no leakage in our car. when he found we were eating on his front step, he was annoyed because spilled fish oil will make it smelly in a way he can fix. i get it. I'd be annoyed too. Thursday- Monday They do ship read more

As the first timer, I walked into the shop and I was quickly introduced to all of the products. Everything is smoked in house with a variety of fresh fish and seafood. I purchased smoked salmon and a can of the jalapeño tuna. The smoked salmon was delicious. I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

I love smoked salmon and was hoping to maybe purchase a small amount for myself. I was met by a cranky old man who was so condescending and rude that I left. I read many other complaints here about him. Why would anyone spend their money especially in this economy to support such a nasty person? Go elsewhere. I would give this place zero stars if I could. read more

Called ahead for rockfish and they sold out 8 min before I arrived? Had salmon and halibut for close to $40 per lb., but declined to cut filet for one person. "we cut for two people"... so I'm made to buy larger pieces? Discouraging. read more

The canned seafoods are some of the best you'll ever eat. The freshly smoked fish is hit and miss, mostly miss. Either way you'll have to deal with perhaps the most unpleasant man on the planet: the very definition of pompous, condescending, arrogant ass. If you can get past that you'll get some really good fish in a can. read more

What a wonderful discovery! For those of you that had less than kind words to say about Bob, it must be you. Bob, the current owner is sweet as pie. He's also very direct. He either has it, or he doesn't. He doesn't mince words. But with many people, you just need to give him a chance. He's proud of what he does, and you should be too. Yes, it's that impressive. Currently, there's not a lot of smoking of fish going on, but there absolutely is fresh off the boat just caught for you, fish to purchase, along with a couple of different versions of canned fish. This is the first time that I've spent $20 for a can of tuna ( see the picture), and I would do it all over again! It is that delicious. I'm usually pretty hoity-toity with my canned tuna selections, but this really upped the game for me, and I absolutely will not look back. It's not oily, it's not packed with a bunch of unnecessary water, it's just amazing tuna in a can. I also purchased, salmon, smoked, salmon, and sturgeon. We can't wait to try them. We made tuna salad, and literally there was none left. If we could have scraped the bowl even more than we had, we certainly would have. The location is quaint, and if you have the ability to grab some of the fresh fish, I highly encourage you to do it. The scallops looked amazing. It was pretty cool to feel like a local, for a few moments chatting with Bob, and locals were stopping in said hello to us, said hello to Bob, and started chitchatting about family events, or whatever they had going on. It's a great place, Bob offers an amazing product, and it's worth the push ! read more

This is not a restaurant, they sell the finest smoked fish money can buy. Went in yesterday and they stayed open late for me, I was a little short of cash and the cc machine was already shut down, so the owner cut me a break, greatly appreciated read more

This is a boutique fish and smokehouse in the small town of Trinidad, California. We just happened on it when we were driving back to the Bay Area from the Oregon Coast. The tuna they use is 12 pound or less, and the mercury count is way less than the big tuna fish that are caught on big tuna operations. This is not a big City operation. Their store was clean and decorated in a nautical theme. They had a display of their canned and smoked fish products. In their refrigerated unit, they have fresh crabmeat, smoked salmon, prawns, scallops, halibut, king salmon, grey cod, and petrale sole--all wild caught. We got a can of Jalapeño Albacore--Prime Solid White Tuna. They cook it the can. I drank the liquid directly from the can. It had a wonderfully rich flavor and not too hot. Don't throw the liquid away. The picture I took of the tuna looked pinker than it was in reality. We also got their Smoked King Salmon. It was very moist with smoked flavor. We enjoyed it on a green salad. Parking: Make sure you read the signs and park in the appropriate area. Premium products that you pay top dollars for, but we would do it again. read more

I've been coming here for years, with my parents and now husband and children. Don't let the small location fool you they have the best smoked salmon around. We like getting the unsealed bags of salmon for exploring and eating right away. The days and hours of operation are different so make sure you look ahead of time, or you'll be disappointed you missed out when they're closed. read more

Been coming here for almost 20 years now on my visits to the area, and it's always pretty good. It always depends on the season and the market, of course, so you may not get the same deals you got the last time you stopped by, obviously (not their fault yet still the only thing keeping it from a full five stars). But generally, regardless, you can't go wrong here. We like to get fresh product here and take it back to our rented cottage/AirBnb and prepare our own meals. No frills: just good fish. Go for it! read more

I was watching a PBS food travel show where Hawaiian chef Ed Kenney stopped at this shop in Trinidad with singer Jack Johnson. I took a mental note to stop here and made it just as owner Bob Lake unlocked the front door. Just to clarify, Bob isn't Katy. She was the original owner who started the business during the height of WWII when times were simpler and sushi was the sustenance of the enemy. Katy's is a small space with a refrigerated display case full of smoked salmon and halibut in vacuum sealed bags (photo: http://bit.ly/2D6WduT). The fish comes from Trinidad Bay and apparently go through a painstaking though natural four-day process of brining, drying, seasoning, and smoking. Bob also sells cans of fresh albacore presumably to make tuna salad. Where's the mayo? Funny how the cans look like the generic ones you find in the bargain aisle of the supermarket. I bought a couple of cans and the smallest bag of smoked salmon I could point to (photo: http://bit.ly/2D96LcR). Days later back home where I have access to an actual can opener, I finally tried Bob's stuff. My verdict? Pretty good all things considered. RELATED - Lost on the Lost Coast? Best smoked salmon. Owner rocks. Don't dilly dally in conservation and all is good.

Cranky guy with lots of "no" signs in and around the joint, but makes the best smoked fish on the west coast, hands down. Not cheap, but excellent, premium quality. read more

The owner was kind enough to stay open late for us! We purchased the smoked albacore and it is amaaaazing! We will be back for more!!

Great smoked salmon! I wanted to try the smoked sea scallops - but did not have the time during this vacation. I did experience the cranky old man that runs the place - I was somewhat amused by his "less-than-stellar-customer-service-behavior" demeanor - for me it was part of the "experience" of the place - reminded me of Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea." LOL. #KatysSmokehouse read more

Best smoked salmon anywhere! I have been a loyal customer for 60 years and will be until this place doesn't exist anymore. I have tried the smoked salmon from many different locations from Humboldt County to Washington State, Native American stands as well. None compare. It is expensive, however, the salmon shrinks by nearly half when smoked and there is a process required to make it. Katy's does it exceptionally well! read more

Always beyond expectations. We provisioned at Katy's for family visiting and everything was excellent. Smoked salmon and albacore, scallops, halibut, even fresh-picked local crab! The quality is more than worth the price. Talking with Bob is an education unto itself; time in conversation well spent. There are destinations around the world where people travel for the food. We're so fortunate to have Katy's within reach as it's that good. Thank you, Bob! And while you're there, consider making a donation to Team Judy for the Walk to End Alzheimers. read more

The key is to not wake the grumpy old man beast. I had great hopes of delicious locally smoked salmon that would be a special treat. As anyone who shops here will know, the prices are very high; but again, I was hoping to support a local business and to enjoy a special treat. First, the smoked salmon was not anything special and was actually very dry but the absolute killer to the deal was the bones! Apparently they do mot de-bone the fish and this results in us having to exercise great caution, pulling it apart with many bones in each small portion. Save your money and look for a special north coast treat elsewhere. read more

The smoke Tuna and salmon is good but very expensive for the amount you get!!! The person/owner wasn't very friendly either!

A little bit expensive but the quality is excellent. I've been going there for years and the quality has never changed also I love the tuna that he cans himself it's better than any tuna you buy in a store read more

We came to Trinidad for an anniversary adventure and came upon this place. The older gentleman came out after w ehad already gone into the shop, his first comment was that he was closing soon (it was 430) we apologized for the late arrival and looked around some more. He asked what wee were looking for, his demeanor was very dismissive and a bit rude. I told him I was looking for candied salmon, he said he had it and told wlme which packages they were. I picked out a small one. When ringing us up I brought up crabs and asked when he thought the season would start he responded with a they tell us when it starts, quite rudely. When we got home I was so excited to try my salmon, it was a small little piece for about $20 (overpriced) but I was still looking forward to it... I was quite disappointed when I tried it, it was a super dry piece of just plain smoked salmon, not candied salmon. That was pretty much the last straw that caused me to write this review...he was rude, dismissive, and he straight lied about his product, and it sucked. 0 starts if possible. read more

Went into Katy's to pick up some salmon. The gentleman or rather "man" (because he wasn't nice at all) treated me like I was the biggest idiot walking this world. I asked him about the salmon, which was better - dry or moister - and he looked at me like I was bothering him. I finally told him I wanted to try the dry smoked salmon and he pulls out a big 1 pound piece, he never asked me how much I wanted and was ready to ring it up. I told him I'd rather have a smaller piece and once again, he acted like I was bothering him again. The salmon was not that great, in my opinion. I got smoked salmon in Klamath a few days prior which was OUT OF THIS WORLD and I preferred that better. I wish I could say more about Katy's but I did NOT have a great experience. Customers are #1 and they should be treated with respect and kindess, especially when they shell out money for your product. read more

This is a small fish market and smokehouse. It's a bit hard to find. Only two parking spots out front. We stopped to pick up some smoked salmon to snack on while hiking the area. We were greeted promptly and given a brief history of the business by the gentleman behind the counter. The smoked King salmon was recommended and it was delicious. Wish I had a away to cook some of the scallops and fish they had but as a traveler from the east coast it was not possible. I will order some of the smoked products on line. A great local find. read more

If you had asked me 9 months ago whether I liked fish, or seafood in general, I'd give you a big NOPE but things have changed and I'll tell you why. Katy's Smokehouse. My boyfriend and I were in Humboldt vacationing and Katy's was the one place he had to go to. I, being my curmudgeonly self, didn't really want to go because like I said before, fish was not my thing but we headed to Trinidad anyways. We get there and the little old man that owns the place gave us the run down of his product. Smoked salmon, smoked albacore, fresh fish of different varieties and he couldn't talk highly enough about the canned products that he creates. My boyfriend was giddy and we left with a bounty. We get back to where we were staying and he insists I try the smoked fish and I'm so happy that I did. It was incredible! I'd never had anything like it! The texture and flavor blew my mind. Deep, smokey flavor but not overpowering the delicate, beautiful fish. There was nothing fishy about it, just pure oceany, salty goodness. I liked the albacore best but he prefers the salmon. They're both delectable. The canned tuna is just that. Just fish. It's not packed with any other weird stuff, just the fish and it's own oils and juices. It kinda blew my mind, it's nothing like the canned tuna you get at the grocery store. So pure and fresh and not fishy in the bad way. We made short work of what we got and were sad when it was gone. For nine months we've wistfully talked about going back. We have cravings for smoked salmon pasta more often that I'd like to admit, and long to snack on the smoked albacore. I, in just one day, with just one bite, became a fish eating convert thanks to how amazing the fish was from Katy's Smokehouse. We finally got to go back yesterday and left with over $100 worth of goodness. I'm so excited to eat it all. I've seen a couple reviews about the owner and how they were turned off by him and I call hogwash. He's a passionate guy that's been doing this for a long time and knows that his product is the best. He's not going to coddle you through your shopping experience like some people seem to want? And like, he wants to go home at the end of the day not wait around for dummy tourists like us to make up their minds. He tells you straight what he's got and that it's good and I appreciate his attitude about it all. I appreciate what he does, I appreciate the care and time that he puts into all of his products and I'm grateful he's still doing it. It'll always be our number one destination when we come to Humboldt. read more

I like to support local businesses and had picked up some smoked salmon here in the past, so I dropped by while visiting Trinidad. Like others who have commented here, I was treated rudely and was surprised by the high prices. After asking some questions about the local fishing and getting terse and grumpy responses, I picked out two cans of tuna, one smoked and one regular. I paid $25. Much to my surprise, when I stopped at a few places in Eureka, they had the SAME cans for much less.....my suggestion? Don't buy from Katy's but shop at Eureka Natural Foods, prices are much cheaper. Katy's gouges tourists who try to buy from the source and you still have to deal with the grumpy guy who'd obviously rather be anywhere else! read more

when you drive/walk up to the store, you are greeted with a forest of signs with instructions. So, no worries about figuring out how to enter THIS store, just read. Once inside, within 5 seconds, the "man" disciplined my son for touching the display. I asked two questions, and before risking more humiliation, we left. Halibut was $19, at the main store in Murphy's, it's 12. Maybe it's different. The "man" should first figure out how not to repel customers within 10 seconds first for me to find out. read more

During our trip to Trinidad for the first time which is crazy living in Redding CA for many years we ran across a fresh fish market, meeting Bob whom we are assuming is the owner gave us many tips on how to cook fish and also history about the lighthouse and community. we purchased fresh fish, canned salmon and albacore. After returning to our cabin we decided to return back the next day and purchased more fish! After returning home we cooked our first fish dinner it was excellent Thank you Bob read more

The only bad marks on Katy's I read below dealt with a surly "man" behind the counter, and they were all bitching about "customer service." While they may not have liked the "man", I'll bet they all got exactly what they asked for, that the quality was superb and that--all griping aside--they would all go back for more given the opportunity. Attitude, politeness and courtesy matter when you're in a boutique or a restaurant; when you go to a fish market, all you should want is fresh fish at a reasonable price, and in this Katy's delivers time and again. I lived in Trinidad for years, and while I had periodic unpleasant encounters with the "man" (yes, he's even surly with locals), the fish was always excellent and as fresh as could be. This is one fish market that never smells fishy. Best of all, they get their Dungeness crabs right off the boats in Trinidad Bay, and sell them for a good price. Unlike Dungies you buy in the big city, these are not lethargic and on the verge of keeling over dead. If you pick up one of Katy's crabs, watch your fingers, and whatever you do don't hold it anywhere near your crotch! read more

The low reviews are trippin'. The smoked and canned salmon and albacore are mouthwatering. If you can't hang with a little fisherman attitude, then go buy your fish at Safeway. I stopped in at this place spontaneously after seeing a sign on my way to the beach. I was the only customer (off-season), and the man working was quite friendly and helpful. We chatted for a bit, so I'm not sure why others have described him as grumpy. Anyway, I bought smoked salmon, and on his recommendation, smoked albacore. Both are delicious! Great flavor. I will return next time I'm in the area. I also love that this business has been around for 80+ years read more

Greeted by a grouchy old man. He sold me some nasty dried old fashioned jerky. When I pulled my chair out and set it down in his parking lot he came running out like I was blocking the throngs of people coming to buy his nasty jerky. Bar none, the finest smoked fish I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Perhaps the most delicious thing I've eaten on my week-long SF to Portland road trip so far, and I'm already in Portland. Yes, it's expensive. And yes, I can say that I felt a hint of what everyone else here is complaining about service-wise. But wait-- Wakako U. asked him about half a dozen questions, and he answered them all. Plus, when we left and tasted the smoked salmon and bee-lined it back for seconds, he answered more of our questions, even though some fishermen were waiting outside to talk business. So I guess he wasn't so surly after all... read more
