I had the opportunity to go to Katie's Kitchen a few times now for business breakfasts and each time I came away more pleased. Her menu is definitely a cut above the rest and different as well. From her breakfast nest specials to her unbelievably good skirt steak and eggs, each meal was a joy to eat. I absolutely agree with the others that rated the skirt steak & eggs the best I have ever had, seriously now, bar none! it was tender, juicy and the marinade flavor was delicious. If you like skirt steak, you have got to try this one. The service and the atmosphere was excellent as well. They have a back room which is perfect for a business meeting or gathering. I have two wishes, 1 that it was a little closer (but worth the trip) and 2 that it was open besides just breakfast & lunch. read more

I drove 40 minutes because of a article I saw in the paper needless to say my food was cold and not at all any good,only saw my server twice and that was to order and bring the food as if the experience wasn't bad enough it only got worse when we got are bill. The wife and I absolutely loved Katie's Kitchen!! We stayed at a nearby hotel (Courtyard Marriott in Des Plaines) and wanted to try a whole in the wall breakfast joint and this place hit every taste bud. The atmosphere, service and food was amazing meeting our expectations. We had a 5-10 minute wait because it was busy but was well worth it!! We will definitely return in the near future. read more

Just left Katie's Kitchen on Mothers Day and am completely appalled by the rude staff at the front desk. We were a walk-in willing to wait and were snapped at for not having a reservation. Went here Sunday at 11am for 11 people that traveled from Chicago. The old lady at the table was so rude but I thought we are here it's no big deal. She called us up 1 hr later and said I'm splitting your table and you have only till 2 pm to eat??? What kind of service is this? I have never been to a family owned business that was so unwelcoming. What a delightful breakfast! We usually go to Butterfield's, but we really wanted to branch out, so we found this hidden treasure. We've been three times and have had the best experience every time. Our first visit, we split the cinnamon roll french toast before we got our meal. WOW! I am not a french toast person, but this was wonderful. Three large slices served with a cup of cream cheese icing to spread over them. It was served hot and had a nice, crunchy exterior with a soft interior. Cooked perfectly! Since then, I've had the Huevos Rancheros eggs benedict, as well as the crab cake benedict. Both have exceeded my expectations. The crab cakes are definitely made in house, as opposed to the frozen ones served at other restaurants. The huevos rancheros are incredible. Perfectly marinated steak served on an english muffin with a poached egg, ranchero sauce (a thick salsa), avocado, and cheddar cheese. Amazing. Make the trip and come to Katie's Kitchen, you will not regret it. read more

Every time I come here, I leave saying the same thing. Food is good, but not the service. Today everyone received their meals a good 7 minutes before mine. No apology or acknowledgement. While the food here is usually good, the service is almost always horrible, no matter who you get as a server. Some are not as bad as others, but that's not saying much. Half the times we've been there, we've waited an inordinately long time for the server to take our order, or to bring us drinks after we've ordered them. Almost every time we've been there, something has been forgotten (a drink, or a side dish, or a special request). Sometimes when we've sent something back to the kitchen to be fixed, it just never comes back out. Usually, we've been ignored by our servers once our food has come out, even when we're trying to get their attention because something is wrong. They regularly walk past our table with no acknowledgement whatever, or disappear into the back, not to be seen for 20-30 minutes. So we normally have poor expectations regarding service when we go, wondering to each other if we'll get the bad waitress, or the REALLY bad waitress this time. But today was the last time. First, when my hot chocolate was delivered to the table it tasted like brown water, & when I sent it back, I was told that they were out of the chocolate powder, so no luck there. Then my girlfriend's sandwich came out with the wrong type of bread when she specifically asked for a certain kind. But the worst thing was the Cheer Campfire Pancake. a German oven pancake with dark cherries and maple cinnamon sugar baked & served in a cast iron skillet. I've had this once before, and it was amazing, so I'd been looking forward to coming to get one today for almost a week. When it arrived today, it was horrible. It didn't look right, it tasted bland and doughy, and I couldn't stomach more than a few forkfuls before I gave up. I was tremendously disappointed. When we went up front to pay, I was prepared to complain, but the woman at the register didn't even ask how everything was, just looked at me and waited for the money. So I paid and walked out, absolutely determined to never come back again. We did overhear someone saying that a lot of the staff was at a block party that day, so the kitchen staff may have been the B-list, but considering all the other problems there, even on a good day, it's not worth the time or disappointment to even try this place again. After reading so many glowing reviews we tried Katie's Kitchen today. The food was okay, not spectacular. The staff was friendly but a tiny bit slow, not terrible. I ordered the special skillet which was supposed to have portabella mushrooms, chicken Italian sausage, tomatoes, spinach (I think), basil, onion and topped with fresh mozzarella and two eggs cooked as requested on a bed of their home-style hash brown potatoes with onions. The mushrooms were run of the mill white button and the whole thing was sitting in at least 1/4 cup of liquid. The pancakes my son had were undercooked, as were the side order of mine. My husband's scramble was better and he paid the extra $1 for shredded hash browns. It looked great, but he said it was just okay. read more

This is my go-to lunch spot. Whether it's breakfast, a lunch sandwich, or one of the to-die-for soups, I have yet to be disappointed! I used to think Panera had really good soup. I would only order Panera on Mondays or Wednesdays because they had the baked potato soup. Then one day I tried Katie's baked potato soup and my world was forever changed! We got to Katie's Kitchen around 8:30 on a Sat morn. No wait at all, hostess was very cheerful and sat us immediately. Within about 30 seconds we had coffee and four blueberry muffins. The coffee was a little weak but we like very bold, strong coffee so we're a little hard to please. I ordered a basic cheddar and sausage omelet. The omelet had a lot of sausage and cheese. It was cooked perfectly, not overdone or underdone. It came with two pancakes which were really tasty but I could only eat about 1/4 of them. I also got diced potatoes which were good but not my fav. Our 9 year old got the alphabet pancake (he chose T) and sausage. He loved both. My daughter got the fried ice cream waffle which she thoroughly enjoyed. My husband got one of the nests with jalapenos, smoked sausage, tomatoes, cheese,asparagus and some other things. Needless to say, it could've fed a small country. It was spicy and good. Overall we had a great experience and would recommend Katie's Kitchen. read more

I really, really wanted to love this place. I scoured the reviews, I salivated thinking about the delicious food and was excited to finally be in the area to try it. I happened to be in Des Plaines on a Thursday evening and dined there for dinner with my Mom and two small children. We were seated immediately in the relatively empty restaurant. It was cute, clean and I was sure the good would match the great reviews. It ended quickly though. There was one waiter working and after and slightly larger party walked in he was less than attentive. The menu is on the small side which I absolutely don't mind, however the choices weren't varied or anything particularly special. I ended up ordering the corned beef sandwich. I asked for 1000 island instead of Dijon mustard and was told it would be on the side. My sandwich came out and I was disappointed in the lackluster appearance immediately. The beef was on barely toasted thin rye bread. There was no cheese, no sauerkraut, no garnish, nothing. My beef was cold in spots, and the bread was so soggy I couldn't even pick it up to eat it like a sandwich. Just sad. My mom ordered a burger that looked better, and the kids meals were ok but definately on the pricer side of a child's meal. Other people in the restaurant were eating the breasted chicken, and that actually looked much more appetizing. Not every place can have a great corned beef sandwich, but if you aren't going to put ANY effort into it, why even serve it out of your kitchen?? read more

I used to go here weekly, but the service can be so POOR and the owners do not care because they have enough business. Last time, my daughter's order was wrong, even though she told the waitress what she wanted and pointed to it on the menu because of the noise level of the room. It took over 1/2 hour for her correct entree to arrive. The rest of our party had finished our meals. When I complained to the owner in a very professional manner, her response was "Oh, she (the waitress) usually is not the one that makes a mistake." I was speechless. They could have at least compensated my daughter's meal or even offered an apology. I have never returned and never will. read more

This review covers their horrid dinner service; breakfast is still very good. We arrived a little after 7 for their all-you-can-eat fish fry. We were given a table and the server took our drink orders and the busboy brought excellent bread and butter. When the overmatched server, who was very nice but I think covered the whole place herself, finally came back we told her we would all take the fish fry. She said, "Oh, we ran out of the fish an hour ago; didn't she tell up front you when she sat you?" Uh, no. The server said they could still do fish and chips, cod not white fish and not all-you-can-eat but a good-sized portion, and you can also get it with mashed instead of fries. Sounds good, why not, only a couple bucks more than the fish fry, and my wife ordered the tilapia fish tacos. It took a long time for the food to come out, and I wish to God it had taken longer. The three decent sized pieces of ~cod were not really breaded or battered, but were dry, off-color,smelly, and twisted into weird shapes. Maybe the fish was old, maybe it was popped right from the freezer into the oil, maybe both...I can't say; I'm not a pathologist, but it was easily the worst restaurant meal we have ever had. I had thought, "Ooh, they make their own tartar sauce" because it was an unusual 1000 Island-type color, but then I swished a fork into it and saw the usual cream color lived just below the surface; it had obviously been put into cups a long time before and maybe not refrigerated. The off-ish cole slaw and salty mashed potatoes were about the same temperature as well. Ugh, I started feeling kinda sick at the table I love food and I stopped eating after one piece, my son "The Machine" stopped after two, and my wife left a lot of taco junk as well. We boxed up the leftovers to throw out at home (we're strange that way: never want to hurt the server's feelings), paid up, and hurried home to get sick in familiar surroundings. But there was a floor show! An older gentleman who is part of the ownership hipchecked my shoulder when he was squeezing by to sit with a group of friends at the next table, then stepped flat on my foot as he turned around. He did say Oops. He was in his cups and kept muttering loudly how stupid this thing or that person was, this sh*t and that, on and on. A born raconteur. It was like sitting in your drunk uncle's rec room, only with inedible food that you pay for. And my son paid again just after we got home; call it a short-term rental. Katie, stop serving dinner before the bad reputation splashes back onto the breakfast side. And speaking of splashing back; I have to leave now. read more

Katie's is our new "Go to breakfast spot". We typically come in with a party of 10 to 14, and they have no problem seating us, we just call ahead to let them know we are coming......The amazing thing is that all the food comes out quickly and at the same time. We always order Bloody Mary's on Sunday Morning....and they a great. Our large party has ordered almost everything on the menu and it's all well prepared and tasty .The eggs, wether they are poached, sunny side up or over easy are always cooked to perfection. Everyone seems to like their skillets and the skirt steak is delicious. The prices are resonable for what you get in food quantity and quality. You can't go wrong coming here. Enjoy! read more

You can't please everybody all the time,and when it comes to Katie's Kitchen...I'm NOT one of those people(smile). I was very pleased with my dining experience,even though it was VERY crowded. To me a little wait time,and a large crowd is a good sign that the place has something alot of people want. This is the case with Katie's. My fiancee ,and I waited about 10 minutes,and were told the wait would be about 15 minutes. I had the omelet surrounded by the shredded has browns. It was great!! My fiancee had the "Short Rib Mashed.." She let me have a little,even though I wasn't so sure about getting a chance to taste it. It was that good(LOL). I drove 45 minutes to check out Katie's Kitchen because of what I saw on Yelp. So,so, many positive reviews. Add mine to the list. i was impressed that even though there was a large crowd, the service was prompt,friendly,and precise. The food was very good,and I'm pretty sure that at some point we'll make another 45 minute drive back to Katie's Kitchen. read more

We love this place. It's hard to find a really, good breakfast place in the suburbs so we often head into the city. We tried Katie's after reading all of the positive reviews and we continue to never be disappointed when we're there. Their breakfast menu rivals any city spot with a huge variety of "non typical' breakfast menu items. i've had all three of their specialty oatmeals and could never pick a favorite -- they're all outstanding. Their omelets and French toasts are also great. Always excellent service. If you are tired of the "same old" breakfast foods -- this is the place to go in the 'burbs. (We've only been for breakfast but I can't imagine the other meals are any less spectacular). read more

So good. I am always weary of the suburban strip mall diner, but Katie's is awesome. We stopped in for hungover Sunday brunch. The food was awesome and they were so accomodating. I ordered a skillet over sweet potato fries and my fiancee ordered an omelet and couldn't finish it there was just so much food. Coffee was good. Service was great. They also offer gluteb free toast and sugar free syrup so it seems like the kind of place that wants to accomodate everyone. We will definately be adding Katie's to our list of weekend breakfast places. read more

More than typical diner food, KK delivers breakfast staples such as skillets, pancakes, and waffles with fresh ingredients and a sophisticated twist. I had whole grain waffles with fresh bananas and strawberries today. I tasted the turkey sausage and it was nicely spiced and perfectly cooked.
