Owner is super nice and offers great suggestions. Extemely talented employees. I believe all are artists. It is a world class framing shop. It's fun just to walk around the shop and gallery. She's probably framed 4 things for me over the years and they always turn out amazing. You pay a bit more here, but if you want something done cheaply and simply, you go somewhere else. 2 of the frames I picked out they had painted with interesting finishes. For fine art or something special, you go here. They have a wide assortment of frames so you don't have to spend a fortune if you don't want to. read more

My review here is based on my one experience with Katayama and I have no thoughts on their actual framing work as I left without having them frame my piece and went elsewhere. Maybe it was wrong of me to go in with a smallish piece that I was giving as a gift and expressed right off that with that in mind I didn't want a complicated and expensive frame. I must add here that I have a great amount of experience with framing myself and having pieces including entire exhibitions framed and have had great working relationships with other framers of the bespoke nature. I also know quite well the cost involved in having a piece framed. It was my first time going into Katayama and immediately upon engaging with the guy there, I believe not the owner, there seemed to be no real interest on his part to listen to where I was coming from with the piece and as I also had no idea of how to frame the piece on metal and do so in a simple but cost effective way that didn't look like a pre made frame. The person was clueless and it was a total struggle for me to try and figure out myself picking through their frames of vastly different prices what to do. I finally myself came up with a simple frame w some design and decided to just have the piece glued to a back mat with one over mat and under glass. I asked for him to please break down the cost of all the components when he came up with his quote so I would know how much they were charging me for the mat, glass frame.... This he didn't do and told me it would be over $500 and with a first time discount like $480. Like I said, I am no newcomer to having things framed. I have been framing myself and working with high end framers for over 30 years. For the simple framing job of this smallish piece I was immediately struck that he was taking me for a ride. I never clicked with the guy from the moment I went in and never felt any true engagement. I am used to sometimes knowing exactly what I want to do and sometimes having no clue but then after eliciting the expertise of the framer come up with something great. I left without having the piece done and went elsewhere where within 10 minutes the person came up with an idea and correct choice of mat color and frame choice, and for considerably less cost and was pleasant and engaging. I left Katayama with the sense that possibly the guy had sized me up as someone whom they were out of my league and was destined to wanting a cheap Frame -It-Yourself type job. If that is the case he was wrong. I prefer to support local businesses but I am not sure I will give Katayama another go. For what they charge I can work remotely with framers I have a rapport with out of state and send the work and have the finished piece sent back and still save something in cost. read more

What a great experience working with Katayama Framing. We had a Indian silk fabric to be framed. Travis spent so much time with me, choosing a frame, background, glass and relief. We picked up the finished piece this week and were overwhelmed with how beautifully it was done. The finished product really did justice to the the unique fabric. I've been by Katayama for a couple different jobs. Both turned out fantastic! They have a really unique mix of artists who seem to be able to pull off almost anything and everyone I've interacted with has been really friendly.
