Ever since I redecorated my place, I wanted to do something new and really different with my wall space. I had plenty of art languishing downstairs in my storage unit and none of it spoke to me or vibed with my new décor. It finally hit me; I should do a collage of photos of the most important people and pets in my life. I had just had a photo of my gorgeous silver Persian cat, Chevrolet (RIP) reframed and it turned out beautifully. I started talking to Mel about my collage idea and what I needed to do to make it happen. Turns out it was more complicated than I thought. Mel got me started by drawing a simple map and giving me some ideas about how many photos of what size I could fit into what space. Turns out less than I thought. This was going to be hard. I took my little piece of paper and drew out what would end up being approximately a 40x36 in piece that I was able to fit 21 photos on. One 8x10, nineteen 5x7, and one custom size. Then came the hard part; making sure I included all my important people and pets. Mel was really helpful as I narrowed down the photos and laid out the arrangements of the photos. I've got it home and am waiting for a handyman to come hang all my art. I am delighted with the photo collage and Chevrolet. I have another piece of art that I did myself from A-Zed. I absolutely do not recommend Mel's frame shop. My partner and I had the absolute worst experience here. We got original digital prints of photos we had and were recommended to go to Mel's to get the custom frames done. 3 photos were dropped off after discussing with the woman that works there and agreed on what we wanted done. Two weeks later he receives a phone call from Mel's frame shop saying that two of the prints were finished being framed, but asked what we were doing with the third. We were confused on this because all the measurements were discussed and we wanted the same size for all 3 photos. She said she doesn't remember and she only wrote down "2 quantities" and was saying we told her we were unsure about the third photo. We were never unsure, we were very sure on what we wanted and we all agreed on it. Why would I give you a third photo for no reason? Just for them to look at?? Makes no sense. We went to pick up the photos and she said "they might be slightly off". What?! I didn't pay to have a "slightly off" job to be done. We wanted the photos to all be symmetrical. After addressing this with her, she took off some money and offered to redo it. We decided to take them home and see how they look in our home, and honestly didn't want them redone by this place because we don't trust their work anymore. Framing is expensive, and it's always scary to finalize something by just popping some corners on and calling it a win! But the team at Mel's is small and savvy. They were so accommodating to us as we hemmed and hawed for nearly 90 minutes while pulling down 100's of frame corners, stacking, returning, over and over from the walls behind. We kind of took over the shop on a random Wednesday night, and all the team there did was help us sort it all out. We re-framed two pieces of art, and got them back in less than 2 weeks. This was the first time I got something framed professionally. I couldn't have imagined a better first experience! I stopped by some other frame shops around town to get some info, and Mel's was by far the friendliest, well-priced, and supportive of artists. Mel and her assistant are great! I wanted to get some drawings framed, and they were extremely helpful in suggesting mattes and frames within budget, and how to arrange the triptychs. To explain how happy I am with Mel's is to explain a little about the piece they framed. My piece is a mixed media art. I knew that I wanted the back to be able to be shown as it is a negative of the texture on the front. So I had only one condition when it was going to be framed, that I wanted to be able to view the back when wanted. I thought I had a good idea of the style of frame but Mel and her team gave some great suggestions (one of which we ended up going for). They also suggested some great mats that ended up being perfect as well. Finished on time I went to pick it up. She showed me the piece and I was shocked on how well they did. Then she flipped it over... I didn't realize she had just showed me the back. Because of the style of the piece the back and front are negatives and easily mirrored, the amazing job they did made the back look as professional as the front. It shouldn't have to be said the front turned out perfectly as well. I have no reservations to sending everyone to Mel's. They are all artists so they are very helpful giving insights to what looks good. They are professional up to the extra steps they took to make every aspect of their work amazing. read more

I recently moved to Portland and wanted to support a local business rather than one of the big online framers. From start to finish my experience with Mel's was fantastic. My project was small, I just needed two new mattes for existing framed artwork, but Doug was super helpful. Not only did he get my project done quickly, but he brought it right out to my car when it was done. I stopped into Mel's Frame Shop at the end of 2013 looking to have a couple of prints framed. This was my first time venturing into a frame shop with the intent of getting something other than a simple vanilla frame job. Mel cleared out a spot on her workbench to lay out both prints I had selected and happily provided suggestions on various art mats and frame options. I was almost overwhelmed at the various combinations I had thanks to her recommendations. Not only did she select colors that complimented the pictures but she also inquired as to what type of environment they would be hanging in and adjusted her suggestions to suit. I bought two beautiful paintings from a street vendor in New York last year. Having pictures professionally framed is something I've not done before but the quality of these works demanded such. I picked Mel's for the job because it's close to home, it's locally owned and reviews online are mostly quite favorable. I don't recall the name of the lady who helped me but her attitude was very positive and she never seemed fake or 'put-on.' Without rushing, she showed me various examples in the colors I'd chosen and answered all of my questions. Further, she stayed well within my budget, without skimping on quality. What a great experience. During a recent move, glass on two pictures was cracked. I came to Yelp and found and contact three shops. Mel got back to me quickly and on her day off. I never heard back from the other two. We chatted online before I came into her shop with the two moving victims. Mel examined the pictures and asked what glass I wanted for the replacement. I told her that this is my first glass replacement and did not know I had choices. Mel patiently explained my options and provided quotes for all three types. Mel noted that on one of my favorite pictures, a yellow line was coming through at the top. Mel felt it was the tape used for the matting. Upon further investigation we found that the painting was glued to the matting, making it impossible for Mel to correct. I was very disappointed, but Mel suggested another solution. Mel noted that the matting was sun faded and that she could add a second layer and bring the top and bottom in a bit to cover the glue stain. We looked at various materials and cores. I picked my favorite, picked the glass for each picture. Because my favorite is one of six in a series, I brought the other five in for UV glass and matting. All 7 were ready in less than 10 days, Mel even took the time to repair and clean up my wood frames. The series of paintings look brand new. Mel even helped me to my car that I had parked a block away with two pictures. I'm very grateful to Mel and her staff for such a wonderful experience. read more
