The restaurant was empty on a Saturday at 8am that should have been our first clue that food wasn't going to be that good. I ordered a BLT and home fries the BLT had 1 piece of bacon and the home fries were microwaved then loaded with season salt. My husband ordered a toasted English muffin which was soaked in butter. We have both been the restaurant business for over 40 years and never would have served a breakfast that bad. read more

I went there for breakfast. Very clean, great service, good food and reasonable prices. Very relaxing atmosphere.

First the good news. The waitress was excellent; friendly and checked on us often. The food on the other hand was not very good at all. Brown & serve sausage at a restaurant? Are you kidding me? The home fries were cold, dried up and looked liked they had been sitting all morning and had very little taste. My buddy had ordered ham with his breakfast and whoever put that dried up piece of meat on he plate should be spoken to. Seriously, it looked like a piece of shoe leather. No way would I allow my staff to serve food like that. We paid the bill and left a good tip, and I'll give the place another try, but if it's the same, I won't go back, and I go out for breakfast at least 3 times a week. read more

Breakfast is my most favorite meal! Dan's Place doesn't disappoint, they were fast and friendly. I ordered the cinnamon raisin French toast which was fantastic. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict which he said was great. We went on a Tuesday, it wasn't too busy, we were seated right away. Would recommend it to any breakfast lovers out there. read more

The food here is decent, nothing too out of the ordinary. The reason for the low marks is the water. It tastes horrible. We have complained in the past yet no improvement. Group of 5 went for lunch at 12pm, We ordered simple foods: wraps, turkey club and burgers. It took 55 minutes for us to get our food. The waitress "in training" came over and had to repeat several times what we ordered, while the other waitress spent time at the bar with her boyfriend. I've never noticed or had any problem with the cleanliness that some other reviewers talked about. It's an average, all-around good, breakfast diner. Breakfast was okay but the little girl waiting on us had attitude. She brought the wrong side and acted like it was my bother's fault for ordering the wrong item. When I was a waitress, we would just apologize and bring the customer whatever they wanted, no matter who's at fault. My brother was stuck with paying for something he did not eat. Tip for her, gratuities are a direct reflection of the service. If it wasn't for my husband she wouldn't have gotten anything. Seems like they have a lot of customers so maybe rudeness isn't always an issue. read more

Definitely one of my favorite places to go for breakfast...and in the summer - for ice cream. It is a laid back, very relaxed...(albeit fairly busy on the weekend breakfasts)...seat yourself, and walk out very full, kind of place. I won't call it a greasy spoon...it's a few notches above that - the waitresses are usually high school students and very nice... a little spacey on service occasionally...but hey, you don't go in there for 5 star service. You go to sit back, have a big and basic breakfast, sip coffee and laugh with your family. (I am glad they finally started taking credit cards though.). Don't waste your time or your money! I was hungry when I entered, and felt foolish for going here when leaving. The atmosphere is depressing, the service was lacking, and the food was clearly canned. The toast was soggy, eggs pale and skimpy, and the hash was what you could get yourself in aisle 4 of your nearest supermarket. Coffee weak. Total cost $10 plus tip. Pretty tough to screw up breakfast but they definitely do it at Dan's. The sausage links are pre-cooked, all they do is throw them on the grill, and heat them up, but they are still always cold on the inside. I cannot say enough good things about Dan's place! If you are in the Shirley/Ayer area, you MUST stop by! The food is delicious and fresh, the service was fast and friendly, and the restaurant itself is just what you would want to find in a beautiful, New England small town. I recently went to Dan's Place for breakfast, and being from out of town, I'd say the food was pretty great! I'm from the south where breakfast cooking isn't just something you do, it's a past-time that you enjoy at least once a week. And Dan's Place rivals the best in the south.
