Menu consists of several categories with lots of options in each. Ordered the Bhuna Mutton ($18) to go along with a 'Mangotini' ($11?). Before the food arrived, they serve you some free papas and side chutneys. Sauces actually tasted fresh, and the papad is easy to eat (good alongside the strong cocktail). Mutton comes out shortly after - a bowl of rich curry and several large chunks of goat; served with rice, greens, and sambar. Liked the flavor of the goat, albeit a bit chewy, rice and sambar definitely helped. Greens were an afterthought on the plate. This was my first time at Karma, and I'm so sad to say that it did not live up to expectations. Firstly, I am vegetarian and love going to Indian restaurants for their vegetarian dishes. However, I found that there was not much variety and most of their top dishes were reserved for non veg eaters. I ordered the Kashmiri paneer, and was really excited to try the saffron curry, but was very disappointed with the quality of the food. The curry did not have much saffron flavor and was filled with vegetables other than paneer, which is not what I ordered. It seemed like they filled up the curry with potatoes and cauliflower to increase the quantity, without actually adding more paneer. My non veg friends got the chicken biryani and the madras chicken, and they were raving about it. The chicken biriyani has a huge portion size, so take advantage of that! Overall, the place is cute and has a nice vibe, however, I left feeling very unsatisfied with the Kashmiri paneer, especially for the price. I usually like to order my Indian food from Jersey city because I've had karma kafe in the past and I didn't like it too much. The food was always very greasy and oily. My delivery bag would come drenched in oil. But I figured since I've lived in Hoboken so long I might as well give Karma Café another chance. I ordered the naan, kofta makhani, the tandoori shrimp, and the samosas. The samosas were good, the tandoori shrimp was extremely cold but good, and the rest below average. The makhani sauce tasted a bit sour. They also don't give that much sauce. The dumplings take up much of the container and the sauce is the best part so I was disappointed in that. I like the taste of the food but my stomach sometimes disagrees with the food and I spend a long time sitting on the toilet. Not sure if I should blame the lamb medley. Karma Kafe is a popular Indian restaurant located in Hoboken. It is extremely popular in the neighborhood and we planned on going there for lunch before COVID-19. Thus once everything opened, this was one of the first places we decided to order from Paneer Kashmiri: we chose this option as we wanted two completely different entree options. Kashmiri curries are supposed to babe saffron and lots of raisins and cashews which make them creamy and sweet. We enjoyed the curry but were disappointed with huge chunks of potatoes in it. The curry was sweet but the huge cherry on top and big pieces of potato were not a delight to eat Vegetable jalfrezi: vegetable jalfrezi is assorted veggies in brown curry. This was spicy (not super spicy) and tasted well. It had peas, cauliflower, cilantro, peppers, carrots, tomatoes and potatoes. It tasted well but was super oily Peshawari naan: peshawari naan is an all purpose flour flatbread with raisins and nuts. This goes well with a spicy curry. It was huge. Much larger than the usual serve and could taste the dry fruits in every bite. Whole wheat roti: I was surprised with the portion size of the whole wheat flat bread. It was huge. This is for health lovers. Plain simple flatbread. It exemplifies the taste of the curries All the entrees come with a side of dal and rice. Rice is plain simple rice which can go with any curry. Our guess is it is made of yellow split beans. It was slightly watery for our taste and avoided it all together. All together, we liked the food. The quantity was decent. Slightly pricey. We ordered paneer, tandoori fish, and garlic butter naan. The naan was gigantic and delicious, I love the taste of garlic and butter on my naan, I enjoyed every single bite of it. Our table was very small though, we ordered around 3 dishes and we barely had any space, that's why we didn't order any other drinks to try because there was no space at all. I've ordered from here a couple times now. It's more of a 3.5 stars--I would've rounded up but this time instead of sending the Chicken Makhani I ordered they sent paneer in some kind of tomato-based curry. As much as I like paneer, I had also ordered palak paneer and this was just way too much paneer! Also I don't know how you mix those up. I kept thinking some vegetarian somewhere was going to be quite upset to have received my chicken lol. Anyway, I tried to call them but couldn't get through. Aside from that mistake, their food is a little inconsistent. Certain things are amazing--absolutely love their gingery coconut chicken soup, I think I will get this every time. The kabab sampler is pretty good & a decent amount. The mango lassi is tasty but they give you just a small coffee cup of it, much smaller quantity than most places. The palak paneer is quite good and they do give a lot of paneer (a lot of places skimp on it, but not here). They give you daal & rice too but I am not a rice person and would rather they just have the dish at a lower price & omit the unasked for daal & rice. The karma aloo was just a soggy mess--seemed the potato was a bit burnt too and way too much spice--should have been more yogurt but maybe on the side because it was just a glop when it arrived. Threw most of that away. Also disappointing was the naan, roti & garlic naan. None of these tasted as they should. I am Indian and have been fairly obsessed with naan and roti all my life and so I have consumed so much of these all my life lol. But these were SO doughy and not in a good way; roti/chapati especially should be thin & flat (whole wheat & unleavened). Anyway I would probably order from them again but maybe get the soup & then try some very different things that might be better. However when I went to bite into my food - not sure if it came from the nann or the tikka but I heard a large hard crunch and spit out my food as this is completely unusual. I inspected to see what caused it and sure enough a piece of glass was there. At first we thought no way this could happen, so we tried to dissolve it in hot water to see if it was salt however it was still there and after we scratched against plastic it was strong enough to scratch the container. I got two meals so I could have leftovers and try multiple things. I got a classic, the chicken tiki marsala and a vegetarian dish, Aloo Chloe (chick peas & potatoes in curry). I also got garlic naan. I ordered ahead and scheduled my delivery time and the food came right on time. Everything was warm and packaged nicely. Great portion sizes. Several hours later he got a vicious stomachache, followed by diarrhea and vomiting. It continued throughout the night, well into the morning. Anyway, my wife called the restaurant later in the day, and after a few 'courteous' words, she was asked if our son has seen the doctor, and if he got a note from the doctor?! In itself it was insulting so she demanded to speak with the manager. Since the manager wasn't in the restaurant yet, she was promised that they would call back once he gets there. Later in the afternoon, the manager, called, briefly spoke with my wife, and then to me. From the first moment it was obvious that he did not believe what we were saying. As a matter of fact, he said that he personally tested the food and there was nothing wrong with it. Then he said: "How can I help you or what do you want me to do?" I got a Chicken Tikka Masala with veggie samosas, and a butter naan and raita which is some type of yogurt sauce. The flavors of the Chicken Tikka Masala were out of this world! So delicious and full of flavor; the chicken was so tender, everything about that dish was amazing, I just couldn't stop eating it. Just one con I would note is that the portion size could've been a bit more generous for the price. Other than that this dish is for sure a crave ! The raita could've been better; the description says it was supposed to come with cucumbers and tomatoes within this yogurt sauce, however, I got none in my order, but the flavor of it was still excellent and very refreshing. The samosas were great too; packed with potatoes, lentils and seasoned perfectly. Great amount of filling and worth the money. Naan was fluffy and such a great addition for the Masala. I recently visited Karma Kafe after about five years and the food was actually even better than I remember it! If you're looking for delicious Punjabi Indian food with generous portions, I would definitely recommend Karma Kafe. We came here on a Friday evening after hanging out at Pier 13, which is a fairly short walk away. We went around 7:30 PM, and the restaurant was packed but there was still a couple seats open. I enjoyed the vibe, it was a bit loud with the many diners, but it added to the fun and excitement of the experience. I started off with a delicious cocktail and complimentary "pappar" which is like a light, crunchy Indian cracker flamed on a stovetop with a kick to it. It comes with delicious sweet and spicy chutneys, as well as spicy pickled onions! For the entree, I ordered my go to at Punjabi restaurants, Paneer Palak (Paneer Cheese Cubes in a Spiced Creamy Spinach Sauce. Served with Basmati Rice and sal) ($12). I also ordered the Chili Garlic Naan ($4.50). These were generous servings and I took about half of my food to go, which was great! Everything was so delicious and well spiced. The Palak Paneer was creamy, savory and tasty. My favorite was the Chili Garlic Naan, it was spicy and had a strong aromatic taste of garlic. I'm glad they also include the dal, you can use it as a dip with your naan or pour over your rice for another delicious side combo. The wait service was generally good and on point, which the exception of a long wait for the check following the dinner. I used to love this place but now my paneer makhani tasted like pasta sauce with heavy cream and it was soooo bad! Ordered garlic naan, and they gave regular butter naan; not a huge deal but still! The daal which comes with the entree also changed and is a watered down version of what daal should be.....I hate leaving bad reviews especially during COVID but it's NOT like they're giving away free food.
