    Green chile beef chemichanga
    John C.

Years ago when we lived on Tucson's west side this was our go-to restaurant for Mexican food. We were in the area recently and stopped in. Except for a "new entrance" and the absence of the old posters the place looked the same. We had the green chile beef chimichanga, rice and beans plus the 3 item enchilada, taco, rice and beans lunch specials. Getting ready for their holiday we could not order any draft beer and had the choice of the one available bottled Mexican beer. Disappointing but not a problem. The chimi had a generous and tasty beef filling but I wish it had more (and hotter) green chile. It came with a generous covering of cheese. The combination plate was good as was the service. The taco came with a ground beef patty. Chips and salsa were complimentary and were readily refilled. While we did not order it, the green chile cheese crisp at the next table looked delicious, like the old days. Next visit this will be our starter.

Today I tried Karichimaka Restaurant for the first time. I got the lunch special with a beef taco, rolled chicken taco and sour cream enchilada. My husband got green chile plate. First I will say my chips and salsa was good. The chips were warm. Now to the grub it was solid. The my food was flavorful, I liked the texture of the taco and rolled taco shells. I did like the flavor of the red sauce. The beans and rice were hitting as well. My husband liked his food the only thing is he wanted to have more of the green chile sauce on his plate . The decor was super old school and it fits the history. The guy I spoke to named Gene said the place has been there for 77 years!!! I'm like they must be doing something right. The cost was about $30. The service was good and o grabbed a handful of candies at the register on the way out I would try other things down the line. #foodie #mexicanfood #food #foodreview

Every time I drive by this place it appears busy and so I had to go to check it out. And glad I did. The main dining space is smaller than I imagined and I noticed they had a steady stream of customers on a week night. Their salsa (free chips and salsa) had a kick and I found delicious. Their house made tortillas as served warm and I could eat these tortillas with some butter and sugar and be content... but equally good was the cazuela soup it came with. I had the cucurucho with green chile. I didn't care for the fried tortilla it came wrapped in... but I did like the green chili stuffing. My dining partner got the red chile burro that they enjoyed a lot. They offer a small drink menu . Service was friendly. Portions are large. Decent amount of parking available in a gravel lot. Would go again.

This is our second visit here, and we are big fans. The staff that works here is very friendly and welcoming which always wins for me. Prices are good, and move with the times. I will call out the Cheese Crisp (with green chile) is SO good. We have ordered it both times and it does not disappoint. The salsa is on point (spicy) and I would guess they make their chips in house. Some of the other reviews seem confused on the difference between salsa and pico de gallo. We have tried several things; Fajitas, Tacos, Huevos Rancheros and Chilaquiles. I am a Chilaquiles snob... to what I like and this place is one of less than a handful that does it RIGHT in my book. I could go on for days about how I think they should be made and finally a place that hits the mark. They get 5 stars for that alone. My husband loved the Huevos Rancheros (they open at 11A but do have a breakfast/brunch menu) and he is hardly ever thrilled with how they are made. As we were leaving this visit, this guy at another table was raving about the steak burger. We will be back to try, no question!

Came her for lunch. I had the "chicken and rice soup with cheese quesadilla" lunch special (I added chicken to the quesadilla). Soup was good and had Rice, chicken, peas, and carrots. The bread of the quesadilla was buttery and crisp and good as well. Chips and salsa (I didn't like the salsa. Reminded me of spaghetti sauce and I didn't like the taste or texture) I love Cinnamon tea and had to try it here. It was okay, but I would have liked it sweeter. Service was slow. I think they only had one waiter working.

First timer and will definitely be back! The service was attentive and friendly. We waited about 10 minutes before we were seated, spacious lobby with seated waiting area and plenty of tables for dining. It's quiet and cozy. I got the cinnamon tea and had 3 cups, plus one to go!! It is SO good. I then ordered the 2 shredded beef tacos with rice and beans, and added a chile relleno. The beef was juicy and perfectly seasoned. I love that the lettuce on the plate was cold and crispy, not hot and wilted. The chile relleno was the best! The battered outside was crunchy and hot, not soggy like they sometimes are. I loved the chips and salsa, but the chips were a little small. Salsa is spicy and well seasoned. Cannot wait to return, it was the best!

Always good and quick, my only issue was that they have their takeout menu online but no prices. I wanted to share a picture of my recent pickup order. It seems that for most of the dishes, they will be around the $15 range for a combination plate. Kinda pricey for a small family owned business. I thought all 3 would be around $30 dollars, was not expecting to spend almost $50.

I've been looking for the best place to take people who visit and this is it. Locally owned business who you can tell work there as well and I'm a local Tucsonan and just haven't made it out here but I'm so glad I did. The chips and salsa are delicious that's for one, I'm very picky on salsa and chips because it definitely sets the tone for the rest of the meal. My friend and I shared a cheese crisp which was HUGE and delicious! We definitely did not finish it this would feed 4-6 people easily. The FOOD I got a shredded beef enchilada and the meat was flavorful, moist and tender. The red chile was delicious and had a kick and traditional rice and beans. Huge servings and overall AMAZING authentic Mexican food. Definitely my favorite in Tucson thus far.

It's been at least 25 years since I have been here. I recently moved back from Texas and we decided to give it a try today. So glad we did. Sonoran Mexican food. Our favorite. So many restaurants around here are going to interior Mexico, Oaxan, and a few other styles. Service was on point. We ordered a cheese crisp (something they don't have in Texas), I had a shredded beef chimichanga and hubby had a chile relleno. They didn't do those right in Texas either. Everything was great. Large portions, reasonable prices and excellent food. The building is the same it's been since 1949. Maybe some new paint, but although tired, it's clean. What a great lunch and brought some home.

Large Cheese Crisp with Green Chile

Visited while I was in town as it was a family favorite growing up in the Old Pueblo. Took it to go and was just as amazing as I remember 35 years ago. Had to get a large cheese crisp with green chile added. Hit the spot.

Chimi plate in front, burro plate in back.

Old school Sonoran Mexican food. Excellent food. We sampled a green chili burro, and a green chili chimichanga. The green chili was excellent, lots of tender meat and delicious gravy. The best chimichanga I've had in many years, No fillers, perfectly fried (as in crispy, but not burnt). The accompanying beans and rice on the plates good also. In fact, the Spanish rice is also some of the best I've had since I left my hometown Tucson over 30 yrs ago. This place has been around for a long time and food is the reason why. Service is good. Did I mention these were lunch specials? $10.99 for the burro, $11.99 for the chimi. Plus two good iced teas with refills. $27? In 2025?

Ever since my bf and I moved to Tucson, we've always wanted to try this place. 2 years passed and finally we went and are so glad we did. (We were on our way to Taco Giro, which is also good) . The restaurant has that typical Tucson charm that comes to my mind when I think of Tucson - south western vibe. When we were served the tortilla chips and the salsa as a starter, we already had a good feeling about this place coz the chips were delicious! And their refried beans!!! What do they put in there?! It was so good! Flauta and Carne asada were both delicious. As for service, it was great also. I didn't realize til I saw down but they were about to close in 20 mins or so. I hate going to a restaurant that is about to close but the server still treated us very well and she didn't show any sign of rushing, which I really appreciate.

Upon our arrival we entered the door on the right hand side of the building. They have two restaurants by the same name that sit opposite of each other. I hear their counterpart is just as good. We entered the building from the left and told the host the name the reservation was under. The host wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She hardly even looked as us. We were standing there and she seemed to be busy with something else. No ' it'll be just a few minutes', nothing. She was talking with the other ladies. Finally we were seated. Our server was very nice. We decided on two steak dinners. My wife had the 8oz filet and I got the rib-eye both med-rare. Our steaks look good when we received it. But my steak was served rare! It was chewy and fatty. I chewed for days just to get a single piece down. My wife steak was overcooked to medium. There's nothing worse than an overcooked filet mignon! We don't like sending food back for obvious reasons. We've heard too many horror stories, not to mention I use to work in the food industry. As I mentioned, our server was very nice and attentive as well! She constantly checked on us and my tip reflected that! For a $170.00 bill, our meal was mediocre at best. For dinner drinks she got an Italian Nebbiolo Bricco Magno Red Blend ($13/glass, reliably terrific/mellow) and I got the Chupacabra ($15) Mezcal/prickly pear cocktail, strong and excellent as well. We got an additional appetizer: the roasted bone marrow ($19). I had never had marrow before but she raved about how good this can be if done properly (bonus, it is super healthy). Folks, a picture/worth a 1000... suffice to say this was simply outstanding! We both had long work weeks and were craving meat - just a damn good steak. Our waiter, without blinking recommended the 8oz bison filet mignon ($65) as his absolute menu fav, and then the day's special: 14oz ribeye ($50). We ordered each. All dinners come with two sides and we each got the day's special: roasted half artichoke and she got the loaded baked potato while I got the mashed potatoes. Food arrived about 15 minutes later at good temperature (warm/rested with a strong char) with each being accurately grilled (medium and medium-rare). Taste was outstanding. Neither one of us had bison filet before and marveled how it (subtly) added a "wild" edge to an always outstanding, lean-but-tender, cut of beef. The loaded baked was terrific, however, the mashed was the only disappointment... a plainer mash one could not make themselves - pure white and borderline dry, no milk, butter, egg, gravy(?), nothing to make it creamy or add any flavor dimension - a surprise frankly. The only other "critique" is that the dessert menu could add some kind of dark/chocolate concoction. All in all, though, we loved our experience and have decided to add this to our periodic special dinners rotation! Staff was outstanding - just the proper balance of attentive and quiet - and waters never went below half empty. Parking is free and plentiful, especially behind the restaurant (and yes, if you continue on around the back there is another long entrance/exit driveway that comes out the other side of Jimmy John's and Noodleholics.

Sadly, this restaurant has gone down since the last time we ate here a year ago. Every dish had too…read moremany sauces added. I understand the head chef has a French influence, but frankly it overwhelms the food and takes away from the freshness. I had the snapper since they didn't have the halibut. It seemed over cooked and then drenched in sauce with greens on top, also drenched in sauce. The saddest part was they sat us in the back room. Where they seemed to sit everyone coming into the restaurant. If the restaurant was packed I would understand but every other room was empty. Who wants to sit along the pathway to the bathroom? Service was so/so. Had to ask for drinks multiple times. But frankly the quality of the food was not worth the cost. Definitely will not be returning, until they revamp the menu to include less French style and more uniquely inspired fresh food. I mean if we wanted French we would have gone to Le Rendezvous or Wild Garlic which are top notch.

Visiting from San Diego and was looking for something other than fast food. Typically, I don't use…read moreGoogle for food options but that's where I found The Saddle. It's right next to the University of Arizona on university and I loved it so much, I came back three nights in a row. Call me a creature of habit, but when you're out of town and you find something excellent, it's worth going back. It definitely has more of a bar vibe than it does a restaurant, but the food I ordered was incredible. If you're hungry, don't look at my pictures. Lol. With that area of town being so crowded, I thought parking was going to be an issue, but I found a spot right near the front of the restaurant every time. I walked right in, ordered at the bar, and was in and out in less than 12 minutes every time. On top of it all, I had the same person helping me from behind the bar each time and she was incredible. Friendly, accommodating, and if I was the manager, she'd be getting a raise. Ask for Alyssa and you won't be disappointed. Needless to say, anytime I am in Tucson, Arizona, I no longer have to search for a restaurant that I like. I'll definitely be back. PS - When they saw me come in for the third night in a row, the chef blessed me with a free slice of raspberry pie. That's quality customer service right there. Love this place.

Man let me tell you. First, this is on university's main drag and it's and first food second. So…read morethe crowd is very bar heavy. Western themed but I would say it's a country bar. Service was great! The food however was lacking. Sub par bar food. Coca-cola wings have no seasoning. Burger is blah. But perhaps the most offensive this was the chili. I got wedges so he were good and well season with chili. The chili had corn in it. I like corn. It doesn't belong in chili. Otherwise it was good chili. If you want to bring some sweetness to the chili give a side of cornbread. Not corn kernels. Come here for drinks and to watch the games. Eat the food to soak up the alcohol.
