I had heard good things about this store so we finally decided to take the family for some treats…read more Boy am I glad we went here. First of all we were greeted by a friendly young saleslady, who was very patient with us while we discussed our options and tasted ice cream samples. We decided there were too many delicious choices to just get one dessert a piece. We picked out six cupcakes. Two S'mores, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, chocolate raspberry cheesecake, and a brownie cupcake. We also got some German chocolate ice cream, and a sugar cookie with toffee bits on top. We haven't eaten everything yet.... but let me tell you what we did have was amazing!!! Ice cream was creamy, strong chocolate flavor, with pieces of coconut and cake pieces. Yum! Sugar cookie had a buttery flavor, crisp on the edges, but soft and chewy in the middle. Frosting was a vanilla buttercream that wasn't cloyingly sweet, something some places fail at. The chocolate raspberry cheesecake cupcake was pure bliss. A fantastic soft texture, not at all like a muffin in density, but it didn't totally fall apart either. The chocolate was a nice milk chocolate and then it hits you with the raspberry filling, just right. The cream cheese frosting on top put it over the edge. Delicious!!! Every bite was on point. The second cupcake we tried was the brownie one. That one was very sweet, I would even say a little too sweet with the frosting. It was much more dense, probably because it was part brownie. It was not our favorite of the two cupcakes we tried, however our daughter thought it was above and beyond the best cupcake she tried. So maybe if you're really into sweet that's the cupcake for you. The other three cupcakes we have yet to enjoy, but based on everything else we tasted I have a feeling they are going to taste phenomenal. If you're in Idaho Falls looking to get your sugar fix, go here. It's worth every calorie.

Back in my younger days (few decades ago), we didn't have a myriad of niche shops scattered all…read morearound. So, my understanding was "These newfangled places are for millennials and newer," and couldn't find the appeal of them. But: For a little while now, my other half and I have been investigating new-to-us food places. Setting a standard: Nothing is exempt, which means nowhere to hide from the explosion of "Sugar-rush pit stops." This day, we adventured to The Cocoa Bean. So, basically you have drinks to choose, and what sweets you want. As we were there for breakfast, our beverage was already decided as coffee. It is an owner operated place, and the owner was there to serve us. She is about our age maybe a little younger, and was very nice and informative. Honestly, maybe a little bit too nice--like forced sweetness and awkward. After asking her some questions to determine that their drip coffee is not strong, I asked her if she drinks coffee. She told me yes, and that she would typically use four shots of espresso in a coffee to make it strong. Though I thought this was a lot, I went with that recommendation. Well, I guess my strong is much stronger than hers: The red eye (drip coffee with espresso added) I ended up with was weak. My other half (who typically plays it safe with a latte) didn't enjoy the coffee experience either. So if we were to go back, we would definitely go to a different place to get coffee. As for our treats to complement our coffees: Taking a quick look at the display case, I saw that all of the cupcakes were heavily iced (I'm not big on icing), so I decided on a couple of cookies. One of the cookies I decided on was a snickerdoodle. Now, I've had snickerdoodles, and they have had a menagerie of flavors all blended into one. This snickerdoodle was brown, but was textured and tasted like a sugar cookie. It just was not a snickerdoodle. That being said, it was a good sugar cookie lol. They carry some I had never tried--macarons. In case you too have never tried them, macarons are a French creation and are different than macaroons. I didn't know what to expect with the Macaron: It was strange; it broke in my mouth like a piece of plastic with a slight bit of flavor--I just didn't like it. I tried a bite of my other half's Cupcake: The cake was actually pretty good, but the icing was the epitome of what I don't like--too sugary sweet. I had been hoping to enjoy this place: I didn't want to say these things. It's not easy being a small business owner. I know that, but honesty needs to prevail. The service was not bad, and she tried to be very engaging. Pleasant enough for sure, but she did seem to me, a little phony or forced. She asked for feedback, wondering how we enjoyed our food. When I told her I didn't like the macarons, and that they just weren't what I was used to, I could tell she didn't receive it well. The whole time eating this strange-to-me food and not enjoying my coffee, the surroundings were just very void of comfort. It's not a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. It is to sit there under bright lights, with bright attitude and high energy, to eat your treats and be on your way. All this being said, I would take someone back for a cupcake just as an inexpensive treat. 3* for a hard-working attempt, and a good sugar cookie.

So first you gotta know this; I've always liked going out to eat as my entertainment highlight--and…read moreI'm no spring chicken. So I've had my share of pastries, breads, quiche, etc.. and well, they ain't my favorite. I looove coffee, everything is better with it! (Ok, milk and doughnuts rock too--but my coffee needs to be nearby to keep me in the right head-space.) So anyway, Deborah MADE me go to megpies yesterday. Thankyou Deborah!!!! It's in that cute little diamond in the rough, house/ business building on 1st street, just west of Holmes before Yellowstone. That building has had a history of failed businesses, probably because the parking situation is a little rough--Chapolera Coffee used to be there. So, you might get one of the limited park spots right out front on busy, narrow, first street. You might have to park across the street in the small, but free parking lot (usually plenty of spaces available), and walk across busy first street. You might have to walk up some balustrade stairs, to cross the quaint, and porch swing type nostalgic patio (no porch swing, just a vibe), with patio seating, before getting to the entrance. You might have to sit at one of the few inside tables, and wait your turn to order. But wait!--to leave would be a mistake. Though we didn't get to meet Meg, who I understand is a terrific person, so is the help who was there the day we went. There was three of us, and we'd never been. I was dead set on just getting coffee. But the perfect little displays of croissants and quiche just looked so tempting. The quiche I've had from other places in the past have been small, round, dry, little flavorless bites. But the Spinach Swiss & Bacon Quiche at Megs was sitting right there--rudely screaming at me, EAT ME!! So, as you can see, I had no choice. The croissants on display were Pistachio Cream, and they just looked, flakey, and filthy-- with a light bit of gooey pistachio cream sliced in, and a messy dark choclate drizzle scribbled across the top. So, as you can see, I had to teach this thing some manners. Ok all jokes aside, cuz coffee is serious business! If you can't do that right, everything else has got to be outstanding to bring me back. I don't do coffee drinks, mine is lighly sweetened coffee (preferably dark roast) with a shot of espresso, no creams, no flavors--no disquises. We will be going back to Megs!! The quiche was oustanding, flavorful and moist, without diluting the egg flavor, miraculous! That Pistachio Croissant, well lets just say, it changed me. I'm filthy now too, and lovin it!! The Coffee... Was really good !! I'm a rough customer when it comes to my coffee. I'm not gonna lie, if I were going to combine three different eateries to make my perfect breakfast, Megpies would definitely be one, but I would get my coffee at another local place.. sorry...it was more than good--enough. So, good coffee, good espresso, GREAT FOOD!! CUTE COMFY VIBE!! I would walk farther than just across the street to get here, and, no spring chicken. Thank you for reading, you can thank me after you go here!
