Mee goreng and chee cheong fun
    Michelle G.

I absolutely wish the city had more Malaysian food options - one of my friends from Malaysia says she feels she needs to go to the suburbs to eat food that tastes like home. I do respect Kapitan holding it down as probably the only Malaysian restaurant in the city. We went recently and got the mee goreng, murtabak, and chee cheong fun. That's how I would rank what we got, but my boyfriend liked the murtabak best. The chee cheong fun had too strong of a sauce that was overpowering, which is unfortunate because I love cheong fun. The seasoning/flavor of the mee goreng was good.

We had the sambal eggplant, which was our favorite. Really well balanced and paired perfectly with rice. The beef rendang was tender and flavorful, though a couple of pieces were a bit tougher. The roti with curry chicken was also really good. The char kway teow was cooked well and had a nice bit of wok hei. The rice was the only thing that didn't quite match the other dishes and could've used a bit more water. Our server was friendly and gave great recommendations, which made the experience even better. Overall, we were very satisfied, and we can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.

Huge space, nice decoration, friendly staff. I got the beef rendang nasi lemak and really enjoyed it. All the parts were done well and the flavor was great. Would totally come back!

My friends and I visited here for some good food and good times, and it ended up being just that. The menu contains many traditional Malaysian and Singaporean food items, ranging from nasi lemak to sambal eggplant to chicken satay, and pretty much everything tasted great with good flavor. The sambal flavor defined the eggplant dish and since you can't really go wrong with sambal, the dish was just great. The chicken satay had good sauce that helped enhance its flavor. The nasi goreng was seasoned very well, with all the seasonings infused into the rice. The rendang beef had very tender beef in terms of texture, and the curry lemongrass sauce evidently defined the flavor, making it an overall very enjoyable experience. Finally, the lamb shank that came with the nasi lemak was also very tender because it was slow-cooked, and together with the nasi lemak, the combination worked well. If there was one thing I wanted to see improvement on, then I would've loved it if the roti pratha included even more roti, simply because it'd be common pratice to eat it in relatively larger quantities. Otherwise, everything was just great. Even if the menu was huge, I couldn't see a possibility of choosing a wrong dish, not only because Malaysian food is bomb in general, but also because the dishes all used the correct types and amount of seasoning to provide good flavor. I would gladly recommend this place to those looking for this cuisine type in Chicago.

I've driven by so many times and finally stopped in, so glad I did! The space feels homey and welcoming, and the Malaysian menu has all the comforting classics. The curry laksa was flavorful and packed with a variety of seafood proteins. The beef chow fun hit the spot, and the Hainan chicken was poached to perfection tender and comforting. Service was great too--attentive and genuinely friendly.

It seems Serai closed and reopened, and now shares a location with Kapitan, so I guess this is a review for both restaurants. Interesting. Anyway, my friend and I came last Thursday for dinner -- really big (and no-frills) restaurant and it was not very busy. Our server was friendly and helpful with our questions, and service was prompt and efficient. We ordered the kaya toast and roti canai as appetisers. The kaya toast was yummy (and honestly a bit rare to find in the US), but I think the portion size was definitely a bit small for the price. Roti canai was yummy -- I loved how fluffy and flaky the roti was -- and the curry was delicious, if not a bit too salty. We also ordered the mee goreng, which was a bit more disappointing. The underlying flavour of ketchup was really just too strong and drowned out all the other (sweet or savoury) sauces. The noodles were also too soft / soggy, but I thought the other ingredients (veggies, tofu) were good. Finally we had the curry laksa (the serai recipe - apparently the toppings are different), which I would definitely recommend. The egg noodles were very well-cooked to a great chewiness, and I really liked the variety of tasty toppies it came with (loved the chicken and char siu, and the fish balls were soft and very flavourful). I wish there were more broth because the noodles did get dry very quickly. Overall a pretty good meal -- I'd be keen to come again :)

This is the most authentic Malaysian place I've been to since Malaysia. There are so many street foods to choose from, some I didnt even know about. Truly so amazing and they don't skimp on flavor- the components of coconut, shrimp paste, pandan and sambal are all there. Bring friends so you can try everything. My favorite was the murtabak- the egg flatbread with onions. You can also buy the Kaya toast in a jar to take with you. Definitely try their drink menu both alcoholic and non alcoholic-- those are creative and authentic as well.

Difficult to find a Malaysian restaurant but Kapitan does it well - coming from a Malaysian. We tried the roti canai, beef rendang, char kuey teow, and Hainanese chicken rice. All the dishes are flavorful and authentic, with good portions for the prices. My favorite was the beef rendang, which was super tender. Overall super comforting meal and the service was great!

The food is delicious.. kids friendly restaurant... definitely coming back again and again... we even ordered take out for next day lunch

This was my first time trying Malaysian food and it was SO good. This restaurant has so many options for everyone to enjoy. We shared family style and honestly that was the best way to do it. A lot of similar dishes to South Asian and Thai food but such different flavors. My favorite was definitely the Kapitan chicken and the drunken noodles were to die for. Would love to come back and try more things here!

I came here to celebrate graduation with family and were easily accommodated on a weekday. The space is huge, making it a great spot for larger parties. We also happened to catch happy hour and took full advantage! The drinks were Asian-inspired and came out quickly. I'm not too familiar with Malaysian cuisine, but overall, the food had great flavor. The rendang lamb had a nice kick of spice, and we ordered a variety of authentic dishes like nasi lemak and mee goreng, which were both solid choices. There's a wide selection on the menu, and the portion sizes were generous for the price.

My go-to order every time is pretty much the classic Hainanese Chicken Rice which comes with rice, pieces of boneless, skin-on chicken, a soup, and three sauces (hence the restaurant's name). The rice is full of flavor and is honestly one of my favorite parts about the meal. Their chicken is always tender and juicy. Do note that the chicken is about room temperature, not hot! This is normal. For the sauces, my favorite is the ginger. I've tried their fried Hainanese chicken rice and honestly think the original version is much better. The experience of eating in the basement isn't particularly comfortable, nor is there any service. However, it's still a really great option when you want a quick and casual meal before hitting up a tea shop or grabbing dessert in the area. I have also ordered delivery in the past and the meal holds up excellently. Food: 4.5/5 Price: 4.75/5 Overall: 4.625/5

It was just under $13 with an option to add more meat. The chicken fell apart when you ate it and was flavorful, but the skin was a little too chewy in spots. The star was the actual rice, which I could eat a bowl of on its own. The sauces were good, with the ginger sauce being really refreshing and the soy having a nice touch of sweetness. I'd get it again but I think I'd try something else next time. We also got drinks. My sister was super happy with her Thai tea, and I pretty much inhaled my jasmine milk tea. It's worth a visit if you're down in the food court.

I ordered enough for two, which means I would have something for the next two meals. The restaurant has been around for a while, and it is a stand alone building. The menu, like what you will find in Malaysia - a mixed of Chinese, Malay, and Indian. The service is always prompt. Here's what I ordered: 1) Roti Canai served with Malaysian chicken curry - the curry is unlike Indian curry. This is a typical Malaysian style curry. You take a piece of the crispy yet a little chewy pan fried dough and dipped in this curry broth. That combination will kick off your appetite. 2) Seafood and Tofu clay pot - a mix of fish fillet, squid, shrimp, vegetables and homemade tofu served in a clay pot. The tofu is delicious - crispy outside with soft and silky center - chef's kiss! 3) String bean mixed with balacan - balacan is a Malaysian sambal sauce made with shrimp paste and chili. It has this savory, sweet and lightly spicy flavor mixed with crispy string beans. It was a delightful dinner! There are many other dishes that I'll come back for, especially other dishes with their homemade tofu.

What's more disturbing and unacceptable she continued her argument by telling my friends that how they should survive as Chinese in America, and how they should be "good customers" without raising unnecessary questions. Some quick words to you: It's totally fine if you- Karen, who is a Chinese Malaysian, who probably sucked thousands of white cocks your whole life, decided to continue sucking these cocks until you choke to death. Thankfully, Phat Phat stepped in to fill that gap. We drove 30 miles for a late lunch around 2:30 p.m. to hopefully beat the crowds. There's a huge parking lot in the back, the building itself is incredibly unique, and the interior is absolutely beautiful. It feels modern while still being warm and inviting. We wanted to try a variety of dishes, so we ordered two baskets of the Shanghai Soup Dumplings, the Enoki Mushroom appetizer, Chicken Fried Rice, Phat Phat Chicken, Nasi Campur, and finished the meal with the Mango Sago. Everything was incredible. The soup dumplings definitely filled the void that Din Tai Fung left behind. Every dish was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and served piping hot. The Mango Sago was the perfect palate cleanser and a refreshing way to end the meal on a hot summer day. The standout for me was the Enoki Mushroom appetizer. That will be a must-order every time we come back. We also have Indonesian family and have visited Bali, so we were excited to try the Nasi Campur. It was spot on. The satay is another must-order in my opinion. Our waiter was kind and attentive, and the rest of the staff were just as welcoming and pleasant. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and we'll absolutely be back.

Indeed, this spot did not let me down! It is a small Thai restaurant in West Loop, with a large menu featuring monthly specials and quite a few dishes I rarely find in other Thai restaurants in U.S. For food, we ordered the following: 1. Khao Ka Moo: a stewed pork hock platter served with rice, pickled mustard greens, shitake mushrooms, sauce (similar to soy-sauce) and egg (which I opted out). It was my first time to have pork hock in a Thai restaurant. The meat was juicy and the skin was mouth-melting. Highly recommended. 2. JJ Tiger Cry: Basically grilled ribeye served with Thai style sides. The ribeye was cooked at ~medium well. I wish it could be a fattier cut and cooked for a shorter time, but my friend thought the temp. was perfect for her. It was served with a Thai sauce and cabbage+carrot slaw. 3. Green Curry Chicken: my sister's entree. The curry tasted refreshing and flavorful. It was also great that the dish came with both rice noodles and jasmine rice, so you can try both of them -- indeed, the rice noodles, after soaking it in the green curry, tasted heavenly! 4. Yum Hed. Grilled mushroom salad. There were shitake and king oyster mushroom. Served over a bed of fresh lettuce and a kind of spciy, sour sauce. Great as a side. 5. Guay Tiew Tom Tum Koong: Shrimp and rice noodles served in a generous bowl of Tom Yum Soup. It also had much veg. Unfortunately, I am allergic to some seafood so for safety I did not try this dish. Our server was incredibly nice about it, and they took full responsibility as they prepared us a fresh batch. I really appreciate the extra time they took to remake them as 6/8 were broken. I've not ordered the orange chicken before, and it was a little too orangey. If you can imagine like it almost tasted like a thick orange juice syrup, but the chicken was relatively crispy and the portion sizes were pretty large. It also came with a side of rice, which was plenty for the both of us. The Korean short ribs were also really good and were also relatively plentiful, but a few pieces were very chewy and a little bit grizzly so that made it difficult to swallow. They were very full of flavor, but I think the texture was just a little bit rubbery. Overall, again, I think this is a really good place to go to for soup dumplings, and the rest of the food is over overall kind of meh. But I didn't mind it because I've been coming here for years and I try to be a loyal customer.
