This Kapiolani Center for Mammogram is so convenient with lots of free parking. Been coming here for decades and now i can come for my Bone Density Scan! Hooray! The reception area is bright and airy. The staff ate really nice, friendly and efficient! The the technicians are also very nice and friendly. The ladies are so patient and empathetic cause they know we are a little anxious and apprehensive. The rooms are bright and clean that make.you feel at ease. Wrong information; deceptive and a waste of time. Called to schedule a mammogram this morning. Told the girl who answered the phone what Medicare plan I had and asked whether it was accepted at KWC with ZERO co-pay. She put me on hold to find out and came back with a "yes." When I arrived and signed in at KWC for my mammogram, I found out my Medicare plan was NOT accepted with a ZERO co-pay and that I would be billed 100%. Do not rely on KWC to verify ZERO co-pay on your insurance. That was a close call and I will always remember KWC for it. I mean, nobody LIKES a mammogram, right? It's not something we do for fun. But I can't speak highly enough of the professionalism of the ladies that work here. They always go above and beyond to ensure that you are comfortable. They check in often to see if you need a blanket, water, etc. it almost feels like you're at a spa. Almost. But you're not! The doctors and nurses are all so caring and really take time to explain things to you so you are not left with any questions. I recently had an appointment at Kapi'olani Women's Center for my mammogram. The Women's Center is not located at Kapiolani Medical Center, but one block away in the Artesian plaza. Parking is free. The Women's Center is located on the fifth floor. Check In is easy, and you are soon escorted to a locker to prepare for your mammogram. All the women doing the mammograms are extremely professional and I felt very comfortable. I only had to wait five minutes before I was in for my procedure. Technician was great but the front desk was not nice. A bit sassy when I tried to make the appointment and I got there 14 minutes after my appointment time due to unforeseen traffic. So the front desk was not nice and said there was only a 15 minutes grace period. I needed to come back another time. I told her my appointment time. The technician took me in. I've been twice and will continue to only come here for my mammograms. They have the most friendly, caring, and competent staff anywhere on the island. At my age and being a caregiver for two elderly parents, I've seen a lot of doctors and been in a lot of facilities around town. Kapiolani Women's Center is the bright, shining star amongst them all. Logistically, the building is easy to find. Parking is free and plentiful, too. From Beretania, turn left on Artesian Street (little side street) and you'll find the garage entrance on your left. The office is exceptionally neat and clean, including the vents and ceiling ducts. Yes, I look at stuff like that! When I walked into the office, someone was even cleaning the waiting area. If you do all your pre-registration stuff online, check-in is quick and easy. I waited for less than five minutes before being called--I was then given a warm, clean robe and escorted to the changing area. Being a larger woman, an oversized robe that more than covered all my bits and pieces was greatly appreciated. Details like that really matter. So, I had a benign cyst last year which meant my most recent visit included a mammo and an ultrasound. Both techs were professional, kind, and instantly put me at ease. They explained things thoroughly and thoughtfully. They were gentle and asked my permission to touch, move, scooch, and otherwise get my girls in the right spot for imaging. I felt safe. And I never felt self-conscious or uncomfortable with them, so even the unavoidable physical discomfort was minimized. Bottom line, if it's your first time or if you have any anxiety about the mammo, this is where you need to be! Don't forget to grab a fresh rose on your way out. read more

I try to look at things with a sense of gratitude in uneasy situations such as a mammogram. I mean let's face it, no one gets excited about having any part of their body, especially one so confidential, the main object of an art class! The process to get an appointment scheduled for someone under 40 was admittedly too long. It took more than 3-months, at least 6 calls from me to the facility, additional calls and referrals from my physicians office, a faxed referral from myself before I was scheduled with an appointment. Every person I spoke to was kind and professional but June must've heard the unyielding frustration in my voice and was determined to right the situation and she did! I was so appreciative of her being the only one to execute tasks resulting in a proper outcome (an appointment!). I was actually scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound due to my diagnosis. You're instructed to wear a 2 piece outfit and NO deodorant, lotion or perfume. Terrific! The day we'd need deodorant most we can't use it, the day we'd need perfume to mask the absence of deodorant, can't use that either. All for good reason and a plus for the face-mask requirement! Parking (free) is on Artesian St. though the office address is on S. Beretania. The elevators from the parking garage take you directly to the office which is pleasant, clean and spacious. If you're someone that gets cold easily, bring a jacket as the office must maintain a specific temperature for the machines. I had concerns about accommodations as a wheelchair dependent person but they assured me the mammogram could be conducted from my chair. At my appointment they actually brought in another comfy chair, similar to ones you'd find in a salon that was height adjustable. A robe is provided to cover your bits only to be uncovered 2 minutes later and then your breasts are maneuvered like clay on a dysfunctional pottery wheel! Lots of pulling, twisting and mashing with instructions like head this way, head that way, hold with this hand, hold here, hold there, breathe, don't breathe. The literal pressure to get things right! The doctor reviews the images while you wait for their findings in a separate room. Because I was also having an ultrasound, I was taken to another area of the office for that procedure and met with the doctor upon completion. The people I encountered, especially after the mammogram were suspiciously (to me) gentle and friendly. So of course my mind immediately began jumping to conclusions and figuring me to have the worst. Nope. None of that, they were just as they were. Mustn't be easy to deliver news or share space with someone that receives crushing news so for their warmth, I am grateful. I did have slight pain and bruising but still not a horrible experience and I know what to expect for next time. Don't forget (like me), to grab a rose on your way out! Encourage your loved ones to get screenings at THEIR regular intervals, even if it means showing a vulnerable side of yourself and letting them know you want them around as long as possible. I'll mention a few stats about breast cancer to end my review. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. A lack of mutation in the BRCA gene does not safeguard you from breast cancer, in fact, 8 out of 9 women diagnosed have no family history of breast cancer. Early detection is key to greater treatment options thus improving survival rate. read more

Let's be honest, most women don't like their lady parts squashed to a pancake so yes, I confess to putting this appointment off for a very long time. I had a mammogram done once at another location and the trauma scarred me enough that I refused to schedule follow ups at my doctor's recommendation. Yes, I had PTSD from that hahahaha. In all seriousness, I understand the importance of getting the lady parts checked for cancer. It runs in my family and that puts me at risk. So as a good girl should, I followed my doctor's instructions and finally made an appointment. By phone, it was easy to schedule an over due breast exam. I was lucky they had an appointment opening on Saturday in a reasonable time, even during covid's reduced hours. They alert you in advance, not to wear deodorant, lotion, or perfume. Loved the free parking and elevator directly to the mammogram center. As the elevator doors open, I was warmly greeted by someone required to take my temperature. The second nice young lady at the counter asked the new standard questions about covid symptoms. She then had me fill out papers as a new patient. As soon as that was complete, I had minimal wait time and was politely escorted to the changing room. Wow, warm comfy robe! That started the relaxation mood immediately....along with the soothing background music. Then I met the very professional and oh so pleasant, Wailana. As with any "intimate" encounter, you want to feel safe and respected. My diagnostic imaging technician was amazingly gentle and I loved how she explained things ahead of the procedure. Wailana made an uncomfortable and awkward scenario into a tolerable one. Thank you Wailana for your excellent patient care. Everyone else I encountered here was also friendly and professional. I went here for mammograms and other tests for years. (I just started going to another place, only because it is much closer to my house and easier for me to get to and from.) The center is on the top floor of the Artesian Plaza building. I think the center takes up all or almost all of the floor. There's covered parking and a safe drop-off and pick-up lane on Beretania. After checking in, you'll be taken to one of two sides of the center, where you'll change into a robe. There are lockers for you clothes and personal items. Then, you wait in an internal waiting area until you're called. They used to have different kinds of beverages and snacks available, but not anymore. The place is clean, and it appears they keep the equipment in good order. Wait times usually aren't too bad, but there were a few times when I had lengthy waits before a radiologist had a chance to examine the images. When you leave, you get to pick a rose to take with you. It's a nice touch. Getting mammograms and other tests may not be the most fun you can have, but since they're necessary, it's good to know we have a place like Kapiolani Women's Center here on Oahu. read more

So you might be wondering why a guy like me is checking into a place that men don't normally go to... Well I'm not here for a check up or to get a mammogram obviously. I come here because my loving wife gets me gift certificates for massages to melt away some of my stress. You go up the ramp for free parking. There will be an attendant but he just writes your plate of your car and what time you arrived as the parking is free. You take the elevator down to the first floor and you will see a check in person who will ask you questions and if it's your first time you will fill out some paperwork so get there at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. So far I had three massages and the third one was the charm as the massages I had before we're nice and relaxing. I prefer a deeper massage and today my therapist was named Liz and she did a excellent job. She had better pressure than the other two women. My neck was a little stiff so she worked on it and even did some stretching and my neck feels so much better. This place is clean and nice. After your massage they give you a cup of water, but you should drink lots of water to help get rid of the toxins. They also give you a rose too. read more

I came to the Kapiolani Women's Center for my first mammogram. It's called Kapiolani Women's Center but it's not in the Kapiolani Hospital. It's actually on Beretanja St. It was very easy to access off the freeway and best of all the parking is free. I really didn't know what to expect for my first mammogram but they were very patient and nice. I felt very much at ease and it was much easier and faster than I thought. After you're done they have you wait while the radiologists checks the pictures. I was getting worried because they were releasing everyone else that came after me. They told me that they had to check out my X-ray pictures more thoroughly because they found something so I had to wait a bit longer. They looked and they said that it was okay. They just said to do a follow up appointment in six months. Well my six months came up during the quarantine time. I decided to wait until everything was safe before making an appointment to go in. I went in again and they found something again. I had to go in the next week for a follow up and biopsy. It was scary because I just didn't know what to expect. They were very professional on that day. I met with the operating surgeon who explained to me what exactly she was going to do. She listened to my concerns and allowed me to ask any clarifying questions. It made me feel much more relaxed. Then I went into the room and the nurse in there was so chill. She had such an upbeat personality that just made all of my worries go away. She was so encouraging and made the procedure go by so fast. When she was done, they ran X-rays again and checked it before sending me home. Although it was a scary day to start with, I'm glad I chose to come here. They made it a much better experience for me. read more

I've never had a mammogram elsewhere, but I've always been pleased with my experience here... I mean, as much as anyone can say they're "pleased" about having a mammogram! Since turning 40, I've had my annual mammograms here. The first time, I opted for the regular kine, but on subsequent ones, I've done the 3D. It's covered by my insurance, but even if it wasn't, I'd spring the extra $80 or so. My first 3D found a tiny mass - and maybe it hadn't even been present for my first regular mammogram, it's impossible to know - so I'm glad I did. I returned later for an ultrasound on it and ultimately a biopsy - the outcome was good, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little scary, but the whole thing was done very well and professionally. The only thing is that I wished I hadn't had to wait about 4 weeks between getting the initial mammogram results and getting the all-clear post-biopsy. That's a lot of time for worry to brew. Every technician has been very good at what they do - and really, when you're moving around and squashing other women's breasts all day, you have to develop a rapport that puts people at ease with the intimate nature of the healthcare that's happening. I appreciate that I've never felt uncomfortable (well, besides the squashing discomfort!) and they always explain what they are about to do before they do it. Same for the biopsy. I've never had to wait very long past my appointment time. The robes are warm, the parking is easy and free in their own garage, there are snacks/coffee/tea/water if you want them, and you get to take a rose with you on the way out. My doctors are all in the Hawaii Pacific Health ecosystem, so it's seamless for results to be shared with them and for my own access via MyChart. Pre-COVID, they frequently hosted events, yoga, seminars, and classes here. They tell you when you make the appointment, but this is NOT at the hospital - it's a few blocks away in a separate building on Beretania. If you're over 40, don't put it off - even with a pandemic. I felt safe with the precautions in place, but I also thought the benefits outweighed the risks for me. Screening and early detection of problems is so important. read more

This is not the Medical Center at Punahou Street. Rather, this smaller location is at Artesian Plaza on Beretania Street. Enter the parking garage on Artesian Street. Once you check in with the receptionist, you will be taken to the back where you can place your belongings in a locker. They will give you a warm robe to change into. Help yourself to water and tea while you wait to be called to an exam room. When the technician calls you in, she will go over your history and start the procedure. Hold your breath and stay still. The machine releases its death grip hold as soon as possible! After your quick mammogram, help yourself to some snacks and a rose... these are just simple rewards for being a good patient! (They know how to bribe me to return!) Mahalo to the staff, technicians, and doctors who have kept me healthy all of these years! Your concern, record-keeping, and professionalism are excellent! Ladies, if you're 40 years old and older, you should know that it's medically recommended that you have an ANNUAL mammogram. Sure, you might avoid going through this procedure because you may have heard that it'll hurt or squeeze your "girls". But, think of it this way...the inconvenience or mild pain you may feel during the procedure is far less than the trauma you'd face if you end up with malignant cancerous tumor(s) and mastectomy. The procedure doesn't take more than 15-20 minutes. It's well worth that "ounce" of prevention or early detection. KWC offers new technology in breast mammography called Breast Tomosynthesis that can be combined with the traditional mammogram. This procedure creates 3-D images and image "slices" of breast tissue taken from different angles, in other words, this procedure is a CT (Computerized Tomosynthesis) scan for breast tissues. Results have shown improved visualization and detection of masses or lesions. The staff at this facility is friendly, professional and efficient. They remind each woman, who comes here for a procedure, of her Beauty by extending a beautiful long-stemmed rose to her. So, go on, don't let fear shorten your Life. Kapiolani Women's Center is located a few blocks away from Kapiolani Hospital in the Artesian Building on South Beretania Street. Parking is in the building and free of charge. This center offers mammograms, screenings for osteoporosis, health and wellness classes, acupuncture and massage services. The staff here are always friendly, helpful and caring. They treat you like...family. I've always felt welcomed the moment I walk in to the moment I walk out. I feel special and pampered whenever I come here. Before leaving, each client is given a fresh rose. How special is that? The massage service is my favorite here. I've been coming here for many years now. The massage therapists are very professional and personable. The ambiance is quiet and soothing. The lights are dim, the music is relaxing and the oils are quite nice. Of course, the massage is superb! Fifty minutes of a body massage...from head to toe. Love it...love it...love it! Want another one already. I treat myself to a massage for my birthday, Mother's Day or as needed. Twice a year is when I take advantage of their massage specials. Unfortunately coming here isn't my most favorite type of checkups, but I won't go anywhere else. Parking is always great. Free, private lot in the bldg. The first level of stalls are for compact cars, so if you have a big truck or an SUV, you have to drive to the next level up. Ultrasound & Mammograms are performed on the 5th floor. I'm a plus size gal and require a robe of the same. Today, I was given a robe that was obviously 4 sizes too small. I did just about everything to keep my girls concealed, just short of hiding in the dressing room until my name was called. It was quite embarrassing. I mentioned it to my tech and she took one look at me and was shocked. She quickly ran out to get me a larger one. She was embarrassed, too, and was very apologetic. Next time, I need to tell the gal to make sure to give me a robe with the black embroidery on it. (For larger women) Once in my new, larger, keep my privates private, robe, I started to relax. I had skipped lunch because I was too nervous about the appointment, and my tummy was talking to me while I waited. Good thing there is a basket of snacks in the imaging room, and light beverages in the waiting room. (Tea and hot water, I think) If any of you have current magazines that you're done reading, please don't throw them out. Donate them to the Kapiolani Women's Center. There definitely isn't enough reading material in the waiting rooms! The imaging/ultrasound staff is really nice and make the patients feel comfortable. The aides need some work. I didn't like the other Women's Center at another hospital I went to for imaging. The staff was cold and uncaring. They cared more about their co workers and who's doing who than the comfort of the patients, so I insist on using Kapiolani Women's Center for my female checkups. Just had my very first mammogram! If this feels TMI for you then just stop reading because we are going to be talking about boobs. When you're a young woman, no one ever talks about what happens in a mammogram. Much like child birth, you hear stories, you read books and you think you understand what it's going to be like. But then you go through the actual experience in real life and you feel as though you only got 50% of the story and that you were being kept in the dark on purpose. That's at least how I felt after I gave birth to my first child, and in many ways a mammogram is equally as weird. Now that I am a "mature" woman of a certain age (41 to be exact), a mammogram has been added to my checklist of self-care. Here's what your doctor tells you about your mammogram: You'll just go to this office and they'll give you a mammogram. They're really nice! Here's what it really means to have a mammogram: 1) You don't wear any perfume, lotions or deodorant to your appointment. 2) You are given a robe and change out of your top and bra. 3) A nurse takes you into a room with a large white machine. 4) The nurse asks if you're pregnant and when your last period happened. You don't think you're pregnant, but oh my gosh is anyone ever sure they're not pregnant? You can't remember the date of your last period and you go completely blank! Then you realize you just had your period and you are not going to expose your unborn child to radiation during your mammogram. Phew! 5) You decide if you're going to do the 2D or 3D mammogram. The 2D is what you do if you don't have a history of breast cancer, a 3D is more preventative and costs $79 extra. It gives you 40% more information because it takes more photos. Even though I don't have breast cancer in my family, I still did the 3D mammogram because OMG, it's $79 for peace of mind. Why is our healthcare system set-up this way? And why isn't the upgraded 3D mammogram what EVERYONE gets? This makes me so upset. 6) The nurse then has you disrobe, puts a big xray wrap around your waist and proceeds to spend the next fifteen minutes awkwardly pressing your boobs onto a clear plastic board and compressing you into different angles. All I kept thinking was, this must be what playdoh feels like when it's going through the pasta machine. It was the weirdest thing ever and I'm so glad this woman was a total professional! 7) I have never ever been so happy in my life to be almost as flat chested as a 12 year old boy. How a woman with big boobs does a mammogram is beyond my ability to visually comprehend right now! 8) You leave your appointment and they give you a single rose. This is the closest I will ever get to being on 'The Bachelor,' and for that I am totally grateful! Mammograms are weird, but they're not a scary thing to be avoided and can save your life. Spend the extra money to get a 3D mammogram. Oh and if you go to Kapiolani for your mammogram, be sure to read the paper they send you and make note of the actual address. I assumed it was at Kapiolani Hospital and it wasn't. The Kapiolani Women's Center is actually a quarter mile down the road from the actual hospital near McCully Street. read more

I have decided to update my review based on my overall experience since my last review. While my experiences with getting breast ultrasounds and mammograms have greatly improved. I do feel it still isn't a consistent experience. For example, on my last mammogram, the overall experience and time involved for testing was greatly improved. However, the only negative was that the nurse/tech was going to give me my results in the interior waiting room in front of other patients. I actually stopped her mid sentence and asked for privacy. Thankfully, my results were unchanged from my last visit. Now, this may not seem like a big deal but I would never want to be told that my breast cancer had returned in front of a room full of strangers. Furthermore, the other women anxiously awaiting there own results definitely do not want to hear the person next to them be newly diagnosed with breast cancer. I would love a dedicated private space for all results. I look forward to the day I can return and update my review to a 5 star experience. I had my 6 month 3D mammogram check up today and the tech that I had was fantastic. I left there feeling like I was not violated and my breast was not tender and sore. She was extremely nice and gentle. I wish i remembered her nane. She did say she was doing her job for 20 years. Very personable too. This is the second time it's been clear to me that the doctors at Kapiolani are excellent. The quality of care is top notch once you actually see a doctor. The support staff doesn't meet the same standard. I spent a week trying to get an answer to a question about an upcoming appointment and the scope of what could actually be done. The only thing they could seem to say was well you're scheduled for this. It doesn't take specialized training to read off a paper. I finally asked to talk to the doctor or surgeon they previously referred to. They said I should call my referring doctor to talk about their schedule and a procedure that specifically has to be done by a specialist. Apparently, this was a difficult concept because after explaining that his office wouldn't have access to their schedule (and he wouldn't be able to answer questions about a procedure he can't perform), I get a call from his office telling me they heard I had some questions. At this point, I talked to a supervisor who I thought understood the issue. She said they couldn't complete the process during that appointment. But she scheduled another appointment at the end of the month due to some insurance changes. I called in to find out if I needed to plan for general or local anesthesia only to be told that this was a consultation. Once again, it was like the only thing they could do is read off a piece of paper. When I asked for a supervisor, she just handed the phone to the girl next to her. When I asked for the doctor or surgeon the first time, I also mentioned the doctor/surgeon's nurse. They said it was a medical assistant. Nurses can do a lot of the things doctors can. Medical assistants play a valuable role, but they should never replace nurses in key roles, especially when you're apparently not hiring those with higher level certifications. If they were more thoroughly trained, they might be able to answer a question or tell patients they need to ask the doctor who will actually be running the tests rather than just reading off a paper and passing the buck to referring doctors when you need the doctors at Kapiolani. Replacing nurses with medical assistants in key roles may save money. But it also affects the quality of patient care. This is increased when the medical assistants don't know when to bring in Kapiolani doctors or understand the basics of what Kapiolani handles compared to the referring doctor. Yes, I'll still have to go through a consultation that could've been done earlier had they known how to do more than read lines. But I'd rather do it somewhere where I won't get the run around and more excuses for things that should've been done right the first time. read more

Dr. Twu and her staff (Elca and Cielo) are amazing. I've grown up going to doctors my whole life and I understand how doctors office's work. It's also routine for all HPH workers to introduce themselves to the patient so idk why the negative review said that the MA didn't. Also, they have nametags, so you can read their name as well. =) OB's are always so busy too. I guess people forget sometimes that there's babies that need to be delivered, or pregnant ladies to be attended to, or you know... something more urgent than your basic checkup, it's sad that someone who is having a bad day can slander the name. Dr. Twu is so caring, her and her staff try to take care of as many patients as possible. I've seen her staff run around like crazy because their need for patient care and wanting to tend to everyone trumps their need to think about themselves. read more

This was my first visit, and I was very satisfied. The staff there were friendly and helpful. I appreciated that Taisha patiently explained what she was doing; this was my first 3-D mammogram. To top it off, I received a rose as I left their office. I had to return for a biopsy which is not exactly a happy reason, but I want to say that the care I received from everyone there helped to reduce my anxiety level. I have had mammograms at both QMC and most recently here at KWC, and between the two facilities, my preference is KWC. Not only is it easier to access (parking is free, plentiful, and easy to get in/out), but service is quicker. I was taken at my scheduled appointment time, and I believe I was in and out in just over 30 minutes. They offer 3D mammography, which is an extra cost (I think it's about $70) which some insurance plans will not cover. But IMHO, you can't put a price tag on your health, and so I opted for the 3D. My results were posted in the HPH patient portal (MyChart) 8 days later which was great as I got to read my results quicker than waiting for the hard copy to arrive in the mail. I will definitely return here for my next annual check up! read more

These people are the most experience, caring, kind and compassionate individual techs you will ever come by that can provide the best quality care! Holy cow! This is the best kept secret on the island. I work right around the corner and knew they had massage therapy, but havent gone in the 5 years I've worked here until today. I wish I went earlier and regularly. Big pluses for all therapists being licensed; having a consultation before the massage to help with overall, long-term care and being affordable (as if now $61/hr). I saw Laura H. and she was wonderful with true lomi lomi massage and caring nature. Will def go again sooner than later! Also, I had my mammogram done at the Center a few months back and each one of the staff was warm and friendly. I dont know why I waited, it was like going to a spa! Seriously! read more
