She delivered my first baby, and it was a good birthing experience. I really like that she delivers all babies herself. This felt way more comfortable than meeting someone for the first time and them having their hands in my hoo-ha, if you know what I mean.
In terms of communication and service- she loses a star because I definitely feel that she could/should have given me more information about the norms of pregnancy than she did- especially since this was the first time I was going through this. Instead, I had to rely on the internet for all of my education, and the great folks over at the genetics center in the pan am building (Dr. Chen is wonderful). It was like Dr. Huang is there to just check the baby's heartbeat and my weight gain, and that's it. She doesn't even tell you what to expect during your next visit, or what normal weight gain is, to avoid nitrates, etc. etc. It's literally just checking the heartbeat and your weight gain.
When answering my questions, she sometimes seemed dismissive and condescending (maybe because she was rushing to the next patient).
She's a nice person, and very calm. This helps in the delivery room. But, during office visits, she really doesn't spend a lot of time with her patients. She loses another star because I ALWAYS felt rushed, like I was burdening her and her time. I understand that this is a business, and time is money, but instead of over scheduling, maybe more time could be spent with each patient. I would think that in this particular field, it's not just about the results of tests, but also about educating patients so they know what things to avoid, and what things to embrace... If patients are aware of norms, it's easier to not worry and to do the best for your growing baby. Maybe she's been at it so long that she takes it for granted. Isn't part of her job to educate us into healthy pregnancies?
She also doesn't seem to do an intake interview on the first visit (as many OB's do) to ask about safety in the home, concerns, etc. Again, pretty standard practice that many other offices do.
As others have said- her staff is less than ideal. I've had several appointments messed up by the front desk without apology. At least they smile now, i guess.
The waiting room isn't very warm. No pics of babies. A lot of asian-inspired art, but nothing warm and fuzzy.
If you're looking for an OB, you can call the referral line at Kapiolani to see who's accepting new patients-- 808-535-7000.
If you're not a first time mom, this might be a good fit for you. She's very nice and calm, but won't spend a lot of time holding your hand, even when you voice fears/concerns. read more
