Being Thanksgiving, I really have express my gratitude to Dr. Marisa and her staff. They are wonderful. Yes, I am a work in progress. I've been going to Kaname for two years and they're a part of my wellness practice now. Dr. Marisa and Dr. Cassie are so thoughtful with their care and very intentional about whole-person well being. I last wrote about this business on 4/28/2017. It was called Eden Valley Chiropractic at the time. In mid 2022, Dr. Marisa Sum bought the practice from her father, Dr. Stephen Sum. This year, she changed the business name to Kaname Chiropractic. Over the years, Dr. Marisa Sum has changed how she practices. She went from a private room to 4 beds in the front room. The private room is now the front office. When one enters the business, all of her patients plus those waiting are right there. Conversations are no longer private. X-rays are displayed on the monitors on the wall. My husband and I had given written notification to the business to not display our x-rays for all to see. However, most of the time we have to verbally remind the staff not to display our x-rays to everyone. We shouldn't have to keep doing that. For Dr. Marisa, up to 3 patients are scheduled every 15 minutes. That allocates only 5 minutes per patient. Therefore, she is always behind schedule. We have had to wait 15 minutes to over 1 hour for our appointments. Most of the time, she only spends maybe 6 to 8 minutes on us. The time isn't distributed equally among the patients. We feel she could be adjusting or spending more time on us especially for the prices that are charged for each appointment. Some patients get a lot more time and adjustments than we get. We rarely notice any difference after we leave our appointments now compared to when we first started getting adjusted at Eden Valley Chiropractic. We also feel there is little consideration for our time/patient's time as waiting is the norm if one sees Dr. Marisa. However, there is a $35 fee if the patient is a no show for an appointment. There had been times in the past where we showed up for our appointments only to find the office closed or wasn't told Dr. Marisa was not going to show up that day. We received no compensation for those situations. However, the office has improved their communications and has since fixed that issue. It concerns me that most chiropractors don't wash or sanitize their hands with sanitizer between patients. I usually have to remind Dr. Marisa, although she tries to remember to use the hand sanitizer before she works on me. Sometimes, I just let it go; but I could feel the grime on her hands when she touches my neck, for example. Our observation while we are waiting is that Dr. Marisa just goes from patient to patient without sanitizing her hands. Dr. Stephen Sum did this, too, when my husband and I were his patients. This is a concern as their hands touch feet with socks, head, hair, ears, clothes, bare skin when touching neck, face, torso, bare feet when no socks are on the patient, etc. Dr. Marisa does put on gloves when she puts her fingers in our mouths or noses, however. We don't know if one of the patients has something that can be transmitted to us or another patient? I've also seen other chiropractors who don't sanitize their hands between patients so this situation isn't just occurring at Kaname Chiropractic. It's been years since this practice took Kaiser insurance, which is what my husband and I first started with. They may take other medical insurance. Otherwise, you can pay for a single visit or purchase a package plan for seniors, adults, or kids. Besides Dr. Marisa, Dr. Stephen Sum is still there and uses a private room. Dr. Cassie is also a part of the practice and has a private room. Dr. Cassie does chiropractic adjustments on animals (dogs, cats, and horses), too. Just a fyi that the parking situation has gotten worse over the years. There have been times when there were no parking spaces, and we have had to park outside of the building's parking lot. There are also cars that are parking in areas that are not official parking spaces. Dr. Marisa's practice has changed tremendously since 2016 when she joined her father's practice and 2017 when she first started seeing my husband and me. My last review no longer reflects how she does business today and performs our adjustments. I've been doing chiropractic for over 10 years now, and have loved all my chiropractors. Earlier this year, my friend referred me to Kaname and had shared the various reasons why she loved it - it was healing for her physical, mental and emotional wellbeing which is something I was needing in that season. Though I was surprised by some of the vibe (removing of shoes being one of them, even though I'm Asian and do it at home, never seen it at a chiropractic office!), the staff is incredibly welcoming and I immediately felt safe and at peace with Dr. Marisa. I've only gotten chiro for 6 months in 2014 after an accident--to be honest I don't remember many of the positive effects, just that it didn't seem to hurt! So I admit I had my doubts about the effectiveness of chiropractic. But to paraphrase a great philosopher, to know the taste of an apple, one must taste it. :) I'm grateful to taste the healing and care of Dr. Marisa and Dr. Cassie's chiropractic care. Dr. Marisa is my main doctor at Kaname. And unlike most doctors at big corporate hospitals, she really listens deeply to her patients and is super observant--she along with their handy xrays helped me notice things that I never would have! I've noticed positive effects like my neck being less stiff and more flexible. The re-exam and x-rays a month later showed me how that is and it's cool to witness the changes quantitatively too! Along with their free required spinal care class for patients, which Dr. Cassie passionately facilitated for us, I've noticed my feet and toes are much stronger (taking a lot of their advice and exercises to heart!) which seems to have lessened my constant lower back pain. I've noticed my posture has improved and my spine is more fluid overall. On top of this, I've experienced more mental clarity now being in my 7th week of care which supports my emotional resilience as well. With so many false narratives out there regarding chiropractors, how can one not be fearful? I've tried massages, acupuncture and electro stimulation therapy. They all work for a short period but do not fix the root of the problem. My first time with a chiropractor. My loved one referred me to her. I am a 64-year young man who last visited a chiropractor 35 years earlier. After one visit I am kicking myself for not using this option all these years. Dr. Sum is a delightful physician, and the staff is seemingly happy to serve myself and others. The care is effective, cost per visit is reasonable, and I value my new relationship here at Kaname. I first went to Cassie because my husband was diagnosed with leukemia, and I started feeling emotional pain and body aches as his primary caretaker. I have a spinal cord injury and I'm a 2 time cancer survivor and this office has really been a place of continued healing for me. I realized yesterday when completing a questionnaire for an NET Therapy (also at Eden Valley Chiropractic) the changes I have gone through since beginning my journey with Dr. Marisa Sum. I had to circle in the areas of pain on my body for the questionnaire but it was hard for me to point it out because so much work and improvement has happened since March 2022. I remember completing the same one when I first began my chiropractic work and I had so many areas that had caused me pain. In years prior I used to have to get a massage 1-2 times a month because my body was in so much pain and tightness. Because of my progress, I no longer need a massage for pain and tightness but more for relaxation, which I have only had 2 massages this year. I came in with neck issues, lower back, hip issues. Since then most of the issues have subsided or much improvements has happened. My neck and shoulder has had the biggest change. It is progress I can visually see on myself, through x-ray but also how I feel. Since starting the work, I am standing a lot more taller and straighter, I am more aware when my posture is wrong. (I told Dr. Marisa I can hear her in my ear). I feel much lighter and not so knotted up which helps with my mood because I am not so tense anymore. I am more mindful to move around, do my stretches, make better choices in food habits because I know it will only improve the work I have done so far. Dr. Marisa is MORE than just a chiropractor. She is a HEALER with incredible knowledge, compassion, charm and a gift of healing. She helped my niece, my sister, then myself with our various ailments. She took the time to explain why she did certain things. For example, she explained that by starting with the spine, (that was attached to nerves that went to our organs), our organs could heal! No one ever explained such things to me before! I have a heart condition and get tired easily. Since working on my spine, my heart strength and stamina have increased! I've been pounding the weights at the gym (as well the the heavy punching bag again for the last 4 weeks!) My last treatment was today. Since she practices Eastern Medicine also, she worked on my stomach. She noticed my liver was hard! She gently but firmly worked on it while having the compassion to say, "We store trauma, despair in our liver. It's disguised as anger." She then gave gentle guidance w/ how to cleanse myself of that poison. Amazing!!! Two weeks earlier, she worked on my sinuses and mandible (all connected to the spine.) I don't think other Chiros do that at all.... Enemies: Covid contributed to people sitting on couches more and having slouched postures. Screen times (while looking down) doesn't help. She expressed genuine concern when conversing with me. (She's NOT just after people's money!) She really cares about you! Western Doctors: They train with medicine. My husband, baby and I all see Dr. Marisa. She is absolutely amazing. We started going to her because I was pregnant and my son was breech.
