    Lunch buffet so yummy
    Elizabeth H.

I have never been disappointed here. The vegetarian Indian food is always on par and full of flavor. The staff are always super friendly. For the quality and quantity you receive you'll go home with a full tummy and a happy wallet. I love their dal it's delicious and their plain rice is wonderfully garlic. Also good are the various paneer dishes. They even have the most beautiful mango lassi I have seen, and it's absolutely delicious. The downside was that their mango lassi was way over priced in my opinion. But this is a definite favorite in Edinburgh:)

Lunch Buffet. Look at that beautiful food ... oh and the wall!

Food 5 // Ambiance 5 // Service 4 Lunch buffet is ON POINT! 8.5 pounds for an unlimited amount of food! And good, wholesome, vegetarian, flavorful, bold food on top of that!! Honestly -- even though the choices of food were a bit limited, there was enough diversity; I didn't fall victim to decision paralysis. Moving down the buffet table: dessert (gulab jamun, 1 pound), a salad station, a chutney station (tamarind, chutney, cucumber raita), puri (so soft!), roasted veggies (great spice profile),white basmati rice, chana (chickpeas) , yellow daal, spinach dish. I had a bit of everything and then split the gulab jamun with my friend. The gulab jamun was divine! One of teh best I have had. We also ordered masala tea for two (not on menu, but definitely as for it. Takes a bit to come out but got in right in time for desser) All in all -- I WILL be back! Everything tastes homemade and the lunchtime buffet is the perfect for either a quick or slow lunch; you get full autonomy! The traditional mosaic tile on the walls is so beautiful and different. Add this to your places to visit!

Kalpna is pretty decent vegetarian restaurant which serves good food with pleasant service. One of my friends decided about a year ago that animals were getting more than they deserved off humans and so he went veggie. We went out for dinner with him to Kalpna and, on the whole, it was pretty good. I definitely like my meat, but vegetarian cooking is as good as any other and Indian varieties are no exception. I went for the vegetable Balti which didn't take too long to arrive and was delicious when it did. They'd included a great combination of peppers, onions and root vegetables in a tasty, spicy sauce. They must have had some problem with one of my mate's mains, however, as she was waiting for about ten minutes after we all received ours. I'd come here again, but I'd expect better service to go with their great food.

We also had the fish and chips, which has been the closest vegan resemblance to fish and chips I have ever seen! It even came with mayo and mushy peas. For dessert we had pineapple upside down cake, which was warm and the perfect balance of sweet and tart. A great find in Edinburgh!

One evening in Berkeley, California, out to dinner with some friends at a Korean restaurant, I…read moreshared that I was heading to Scotland in July of 2019 and asked if anybody had been and had any recommendations for places to go. Probing why I was going a little, they got out of me I am of the Gordon Clan of Aberdeenshire, a Scotland of Old clan. One of my friends exclaimed, "Gordon!" He paused, looked me directly in the eyes and said, "You know we're rivals right?!" He is Nate James Lindsey. A member of the Lindsey Clan, one of the Gordon Clan's rival clans in Scotland of Old. Once we addressed our rival ancestries, he recommended to me The Baked Potato Shop in Edinburgh, the city I was flying into/out of for my first trip not only to Scotland, but to Europe as well. Well, I might as well go I thought, how bad can a rival clan recommendation be. The night I arrived in Edinburgh, 5 July 2019, I entered The Baked Potato Shop and was greeted by a friendly worker. After looking over the menu, I went with a baked potato loaded with vegan chilli and vegan Macsween haggis. After placing my order, paying, and getting the baked potato I thought the only thing missing from my first ever evening in Scotland was bagpipe music. No sooner had I thought that than I heard the sounds of bagpipes wafting across the cobbled lane out front of the Shop. Across the cobbled lane I went, lured by the wail of the bagpipes. After listening for a bit and providing a tip I returned to the guest house I was staying the night at. The food was delicious and filled my travel-tired belly. The haggis was the first I had of any kind, vegan or non-vegan, and it was an immediate favorite. Offset from my departure time zone by 8 hours, I went to sleep soon after eating. I woke up early the next morning ready to go. Turns out the baked potato and toppings cured my jet lag in less than 24 hours, quite remarkable. What a way to end my first day in Scotland, a recommendation from a member of a rival Scotland of Old clan yields tasty food. I will however note that I am also of Irish descent, so I am still not sure what to make of the recommendation in light of the Irish Potato Famine... Ahhh, Scotland of Old lives on.

I had no idea who Phil Rosenthal was until I saw the episode featuring local chef, Tony Singh. I just had to try the Chunky Cullen Skink based off of the recommendations of many reviewers who posted about it. I was not disappointed. In fact, it was the best local discovery of our entire trip to Edinburgh. It's located in the historic port area of Leith. It's not exactly super close to Ocean Terminal, but it's worth the walk for the experience. I could immediately tell that the building used to be a church. Actually, it's much older than that. The building dates back to 1892. It was actually a pub called the "Black Swan" before that. You'll see a stone carving of a swan above the sign at the front entrance that pays homage to it. This place was packed on a Saturday during lunchtime. Fortunately, there was room for 2 at the bar. Make reservations during peak times for a table. Otherwise, accept whatever space is left at the bar. It's a very homey kind of place. The decor has been described as quirky. I found it to be very charming with many antiquities in the background. The staff were all friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. The soup (skink) was simply amazing! To hear them say that there's not much that goes into making it is truly a humble understatement. I absolutely loved the smoked haddock, thinly sliced potatoes, and leeks. Don't be fooled by this wee cup of Cullen skink. It's very hearty & filling. It comes with the most delicious homemade bread. Even the butter was fantastic. I'm still thinking about everything that we ordered. My husband's Mac n' Cheese was also very memorable. The menu describes it as being "kissed with truffle oil" which really made it special. He added jalapeños and totally loved it, along with the beautiful side salad as well. His local Leith lager went perfectly with it. I was loving the "Hoose Brew" loose leaf tea served in a little teapot. We didn't have room for dessert. Would I go back again? Absolutely! This is exactly the kind of local experience that we seek out when traveling. It's a warm & welcoming family-run bar & restaurant with great homemade goodness. Highly recommended!!
