My review is based only on the Fitness Center portion of the Y... I went there last week Tuesday and would not go back...There is no towel service, and the fitness center was an 'afterthought'---even the female at the downstairs desk said so... the (small) weight room is on the 2nd floor, while the cardio machines (all 12 of them, 3 each of 4 types) are in a small room on the 3rd floor!!! One is cramped into this small room, but yes, the machines all were newer and clean...but because of this separation from the 2nd floor weight room (there are two shower rooms next to the weight room)...I'd go find some other Y.... To my surprise, this place actually has a decent gym facility & equipment. Also it's not crowded. I like to go in, get my workout done, and get out. Second floor is weight lifting and third floor is cardio and stretching. There are multiple stretching rooms & cardio rooms. So you have a variety of what machines you want to use. The staff are friendly and great. Since it's sort of on my way home, I'll definitely frequent this facility after I'm done with work. The facility is clean and up to date. They also have tv's in the cardio room so you can watch and workout. Outside they have tables and vending machines near the restrooms. Which I think is super useful. Parking is a bit confusing though. I got dropped off bc I have no clue how the parking lot works. I'll figure it out tho. Hahaha. I think you have to enter thru the garage but exit around the building. I accidentally stood in a drivers way thinking it was a sidewalk. He was kind enough to wait for me to move without beeping his horn or yelling at me to get outta the way. lol thank you sir & I'm sorry I stalled you a few minutes when you tried leaving. :-/ Other than that, this place will be my go-to. read more

The staff that work at Moanalua A+ are a bunch of untrained, unprofessional, clueless batch of employees I have ever met. they have physically pushed my son down numerous times with no cares and not once have they told me anything (of course not since they hurt my son). they have bullied him (called him names to his face) and when confronted about this all I get is a half ass answer - not even an apology. they have talked badly about my son numerous times and when confronted they back peddle. oh but once my son protects himself they are all over him and so eager to tell me what he did but no consequence for the other kid. I had a meeting with the higher ups and I thought this would resolve a few things but it's hard to resolve anything when you have an imbecile like Alyssa/ Aliza (however you spell her name) she shouldn't be a supervisor when she can't handle the kids or staff. She expects her staff to stand behind her and treat the parents and kids badly. I understand that taking care of kids from all walks of life is hard but you chose to be here, you chose this job and yet you are choosing to not give a crap about YOUR JOB. You have ZERO activities for them. you expect the kids to sit there quietly doing nothing - well news flash they are kids. they want to play around and have fun not sit there and be bored. The higher ups are no better they give me numbers to call if I need to speak to them and yet the numbers don't work hmmm suspicious to me. nonetheless, I'm happy to be out of their messed up program. this is the only location that I have the most problems with. read more

Their A+ program is horrible. They hire anybody without training and pick on elementary kids. They are never accountable for their actions. In their eyes they do nothing wrong. They shouldn't be allowed to run A+ programs if this is how it's done. Their staff scream not yell they scream as if your child is an adult. But when you meet with the higher ups they condone that type of behavior. If your child is different or has an outgoing personality they will automatically call your child bad. They lie constantly can never get their story straight and will lie to the other parent so that the other parent can make complaints about a CHILD. One supervisor will tell you one story and the onsite supervisor will tell you another. Communication sucks. They are always trying to cover up their stories. From there they don't want to watch your kid so they let your kid get bullied with no help or cares to that kid. When that outgoing child starts reacting to the bullying the staff are like oh the bad kid is being naughty again. TERRIBLE STAFF!! They even force your child to falsely admit to something even though your child is innocent. Euoan don't care about your kids at all - he's the one who will put your child down and force them to falsely admit to doing something. He's barely ever onsite and his boss covers for him all the time. hmmm makes you wonder. He thinks he's superior to all. read more

Perhaps it is because care little for weight machines, cardio contraptions, or swimming pools, but I am fond of this YMCA. It is clean, the air conditioners work, the staff is friendly and helpful, and it's not crowded. Do they have a Blonde haired cutie with an accent offering you two towels when you walk in? No, but I am more than capable of bringing my own towel to the Y. I would describe the overall atmosphere as "extra relaxed". The cardio room is teeny, but my husband had no complaints about the weight room, and the child care room, though small, was chock full of toys and tucked away in a location I deemed "safe". Is it a place where you'll be able to show off your rippling muscles and cut bod? No, unless you're a guy into being oogled by senior citizen women waiting for their pilates class. Is this a place where you can take your 200 pound self and not feel horribly self-conscious about your lack of abs and proper tan? Yes it is. As far as zumba (the whole reason why I go to the Y), Maile teaches here on Saturdays and the class is well attended but not crowded like her Nuuanu classes can be. And, like I mentioned, the ac works, which is fabulous as hot yoga may be sexy in a sweaty puddle-y way, but hot zumba not so much. I like it. Perhaps when I'm toned and HOT and extra-milfy, which is going to happen ANY MOMENT (just have to procure $20,000 and schedule the appointment), I'll go prancing about 24 hour fitness in short shorts. For now the Y suits me just fine. read more

Worst place to send your child for child care!!! Sent my daughter to summer day camp and had problems with the program and staff every single day. The second day of the program when i picked my daughter up from there, the staff had no idea who my daughter was when I provided her name to them because they had her listed under the wrong name. However, once the staff and I figured out her name was incorrectly listed on their rooster, the next thing they tell me is that she was already signed out by someone earlier!!! Of course I'm freaking out and on the verge of a heart attack because no one else was supposed to pick up my child that day when they then tell me that "oh wait she was marked absent for the day." I tell the staff that she was not absent because I dropped her off myself that morning and physically walked to her class and left her with the leader. Well, after all that ridiculous bs of my daughter missing from their program, they finally located her because I told the guy working that he better get his ass in there right away and find my kid. The third day of program another child spit in my daughter's face the moment she walked through the classroom door in the morning. Well when I tell the girl that was working what just happened she just looks at me and my child with a blank I don't really care look on her face without giving any type of response to me until another worker comes by and she tells him what happened. The fourth day I get a phone call regarding an incident where some other child stole my daughter's toy then when my daughter tried to grab her toy back another child jumps onto my daughter's back and and tackled her to the ground. The best part of this was that the supervisor tells us that they were thinking about whether or not to have even called us to notify us what happened and then gives us the excuse that these kids are special needs children, having problems at home as if it's alright for them to act out towards innocent children in that way!!!! That was when my husband and I had enough of everything and pulled our daughter out of their program and demanded a refund. We weren't about to continue to send our child to a place that was run like a chaotic circus, staffed with unqualified individuals, and where our child was not being cared for as expected but rather being subjected to dangerous, unstructured, and traumatic conditions daily!!!! I definitely recommend not dealing with this agency when it comes to finding child care! read more

This location is perfect for us....we live just up the valley so if we wanted to do some last minute workout or weight lifts my boyfriend would come here. If I didn't want to go through traffic or drive far for Zumba I'd come here. Even for summer fun session we would come here. The staffs are very friendly and welcoming. We especially like seeing Director Steve. Even though he's busy when we see him he always greets us with and smile and a hug and makes sure that we were doing good. The facility is always kept clean. They leave supplies needed in different areas that members could use to help keep machines and equipments clean after use. Price range also isn't bad at all. It ranges depends on our income and depends if you was signing up as single or family. We attended the summer fun finale program and it combined with the children performing and a mini carnival. It was very well planned out and organized. Families and the children enjoyed themselves! read more

Being Y members, on our visits to different states or countries, we like to visit other Y's and see what they have to offer in terms of programs and what they do to help the community! Plus we love to acquire Y gear from that city. On this particular trip, I emailed the Y and the director Steve Krantz responded telling us to come on by and they also sell local Y gear! We were greeted by Molly, at the front desk and given a tour by Jon, a personal trainer and boot camp instructor. We were impressed by the warm welcome and got to work out in their cardio room and I even took a zumba class by Cana which was energetic and fun! I was able to purchase a Honolulu Y tote bag and tee shirt and Steve gave us a Y work-out towel, juicer and backpack. Only downside is that there is no locker room and two bathrooms which have a shower so only one person at a time can shower and use the bathroom. I guess you can have a private bathing area but it wasn't crowded when we went in the late afternoon. They do have lockers in the hallways. The exercise rooms are modern and air-conditioned. Well, according to Steve, this Y used to be an office building. But it works as it is also where they have a drug and alcohol program for residents and a teen program as well as an after school program. read more

I stopped going here because i sprained my wrist at the facility. I was confused at first and went to the highest floor wondering where all the cardio machines and weights where until i yelped it and saw it was separated on separate floors... which is super annoying. But i guess it had to do for the time being. For the most part i would only do cardio just because whenever i would go in the weight room there would be HELLAAAA guys in there pumping iron. So i'd just steer clear and not add another body to that sweaty stanky room. They also have a separate cardio room on the same floor as the cardio room that has a stretching mat. It's right next to the child care room. I wanted to go into the actual stretching room but it was locked. There was like bosu balls and yoga balls in there but no one could get in. So i decided to stretched and do some push ups outside on the table that i didn't know was not nailed down to the floor. sooooooo when i was doing push ups i fricken ate it and i landed on my hands. at the time i didn't feel anything so i was okay. but to my surprise i woke up with a sprained wrist. the next day i cancelled my membership and went else wear. mind you i didn't even have my check in code hahaha, it was that bad! i'm only giving this 2 stars because the cardio room was always clean and one was always available. For the most part, the staff was also nice and friendly for me. i've always gone around the afternoon time which is probably why it was always super busy. parking was never an issue for me although some people would be confused and enter through the exit. lol read more

This is my child's first time at the Kalihi YMCA Summer Program. The front desk staff was so welcoming and very helpful! When you drop off and pick up your child the staff greets you and makes the child feel special. The reason I gave them a 4 star is because In the morning they take the kids upstairs and they play a game with the children in which they lay down on the floor like they are on time out. Really! This is by far my favorite YMCA in town. It is very clean, modern, and uncrowded. I usually only see 1 or 2 other people in the cardio room and the weight room. This is a review of the workout room at Kalihi YMCA. I went there today for my first workout after joining the YMCA. I didn't see any pictures at all of the place before hand, but what I can tell you is its SMALL. Granted, I only looked into the windows, but all I could see was a few handfulls of workout machines, no dumbells, no bench....nothing. I should have gone in, but I didn't. I've been going here for the past 5 years now and I'm always greeted with a friendly front desk person, always surrounded by good people, and always leave knowing I got a good workout with all the equipment I need. It's not large like a 24Hour fitness but do you really need all that equipment? Decent knowledge and free weights is good enough, but only if you have the first thing I mentioned. The Kalihi YMCA and every other YMCA generally has all one needs for a good workout including fun and effective classes for all ages. read more

One of my favorite YMCA's to go to the staff is great and most of the members are adults and seniors. Since I'm a teenager I don't bump into anyone that I know so I can get straight into my workout w/o any distractions! The building is beautiful the facility's are modern and new. Very nice location to go work out at.. and every room has AC which doesn't really help when you are sweating in zumba! But otherwise great hidden gem with so many classes to choose from. It's always a clean and friendly environment. The workers are nice and helpful. I love walking into the weight room and getting hit with nice cool air. Unlike the Nu'uanu YMCA, this place always smells good, especially the cardio room. There is always music playing in the weight room to help keep the vibe lively. It's not very crowded, so you will have no problems with waiting for a machine. It's a very nice and small place. There are private bathrooms/showers, so after your workout, you can enjoy a shower in privacy. You will always see the nanas over there working hard--cleaning non-stop--and I thank them for that. The only thing that would be inconvenient is the closing hours and limited parking space. Overall a great place!! read more

This is more than a gym, it's a home away from home for myself, my husband and my children. We tried several gyms and even other YMCA's, I think the little guys try harder and Kalihi YMCA is one of the better little guys. The employees are kind and always seem to have time to help when I have questions. Everything is clean, the equipment is new or newer and the showers are private! You need to bring your own towel, but I have many towels and don't mind popping one in my gym bag each day as I pack my workout goodies for the day. Many classes are offered and Yoga is my favorite. Kalihi has several yoga teachers and many different styles of classes. (I hope someday they add some sunrise yoga!) My sons love to play pool in the teens room downstairs. Now that they are old enough to do cardio workouts, I hope they will stay in shape by walking on the treadmills too. The two rooms with cardio equipment are not as large as some gyms, but I never had to wait in line for my favorite machine. Oh and did I mention the televisions? Each cardio machine has cable television. This feature makes my workout much more enjoyable. The free internet and computer room is something my husband enjoys after he lifts weights and works off his "tummy" in the cardio room. If you like the feel of a private club without the high prices, come and visit Kalihi YMCA. read more

I usually lift at the nu'uanu branch, but I got off work late today so I came here because its closer to home. This was my first time working out here. The weight room is very small and there are mostly machine weights. On the upside they have a good set of dumbells. But if I had to chose I prefer the nu'uanu branch because its bigger and they have more variety of stuff. read more

Trust me, if I had the option of not sending my daughter here, I wouldn't, or working with their agency for the A+ program. Where do I start with concerns about this agency? Let's start with their A+ staff and the fact that my daughter was hurt twice while in their after school program. 1st time a kid bending my daughter's finger back to the point where it was swelling up and I almost had to send her to the ER. 2nd time, a kid picking up my daughter carrying her and then dropping her. After the 1st time I called, there was delay in me getting a call back from the program director and the answering machine for their after school program was wrong. Then, they blame me as to why she got hurt and all and tell me not to take it to the higher ups. My daughter was hurt, I will call who I need to call regarding her safety. Second, why is your staff not watching our children carefully, letting them put their hands all over each other? Maybe, because to my observation when I pick her up after school, the staff is talking story with each other clustered together rather than spreading out watching the numerous kids in their "care". Did I mention they listen to music with swearing and drugs like it's no tomorrow. The kids don't even come home with their homework done unless it is requested by a note given to the providers, despite their policies saying otherwise. My next concern has to deal with them not wanting to give me information over the phone regarding their summer fun program (dates, times, payment). When I asked to be transferred to someone who could answer my questions, I wouldn't be tI can go on and on about that, not to mention their poor communication regarding their payment policies and financial aid opportunities, attitude from their staff (with even demeaning things being said to me me), and poorly written brochures with inaccurate information. For the $1200.00 I will be paying for the summer session, I am clearly disappointed. I am beyond upset and receive no compensation for all my concerns other than a "sorry". That being said, if you have no other choices and are a parent who works long hours so has to send your child here, then do it, if not, try to go somewhere else. read more

Worst YMCA on oahu! DO NOT SIGN UP OR WORKOUT HERE. The staff are not friendly or seem to know what they are doing. The staff try to rush you out of shower and workout spaces 45min before closing to close early so if your schedule for workout ends later you will be rushed to finish on account of their laziness and lack of work ethic. IF you want to take a break while workin out the staff will tell you that you are loittering on the property and ask you to leave. The finnancial department will try to trick you and over charge you if they make a mistake. Every other YMCA on the island i have had a great experience with great people excluding the kalihi branch! read more
