I'm only giving 3 stars because they have really incredibly nice stuff and it's a really well curated store. I really wanted to get some things and support a small business. Had spent a lot of time on their website before coming in. But I was so weirded out by the two people working there today and how unfriendly/unhelpful they seemed - it was if they were bothered I was there. I spent 10 minutes in the store and they never said a word to me, not even a response to my "hello". They then followed me around the store, readjusting the hung clothes after I looked at them. It was just a real odd vibe. I'll probably give them another chance, but only when I'm in the neighborhood. This is my favorite spot for men's fashion in New York--and honestly, in the whole world. I've been a customer of Kai's since 2011, and make sure to visit whenever I return to the city. Most of my favorite garments in the last fifteen years have come from this shop. The clothes are stylish, classic and made to last. The style: think early 20th century American, a la Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven, with a splash of Tokyo and London. The clothes are so beautiful and versatile they work just as well at weddings and fancy dinners as they do on casual nights out at the dive bar. Kai D clothing is not sold anywhere else in the world, and Kai's refusal to scale up his project is surely a reason the quality has remained top-notch. (Fortunately, it's easy to purchase from Kai online and have things shipped.) Although most of the clothes in this shop are designed by Kai himself, he also carries some garments from other makers that share his ethos. Through him, I discovered Feit shoes, Vétra chore jackets, and a few more "if you know, you know" brands. Kai himself is a true artist. On several occasions, he has repaired the garments he sold to me free of charge when I brought them in with some damage. He is in the shop every day. It is a wonderful experience to purchase a garment from the person who designed it: I don't know anywhere else in New York where one can have that experience. Although I live on the west coast now and can come in only once or twice per year, Kai remembers what he has sold me in the past, and my size, and can make recommendations based on these. His clothing isn't cheap, but it's nowhere near as expensive as your typical high-end luxury brand, where you're paying for the label at least as much as for the garment. Ok, so I traveled quite far to visit this store and have heard raves about the quality of the clothes and the service. Sadly, my experience was contrary. So much so that even though I saw some items I wanted I simply couldn't give money to someone who treated me and my wife and teenage daughter with a weirdness that bordered on disrespect. I'm trying hard not to speculate on why we in particular were made to feel so unwelcome (hell, I was even wearing a suit of Japanese design, which I mention because I read that the shop had similar gear); but when the next customer was treated in a way much more in sync with the kind of service I'd heard/read about, it was hard not to speculate (yes, I'm trying not to bring up race even though we were in Brooklyn). Anyway, yes, there's great stuff in here and things are curated and organized very well. And based on how others were greeted and treated, it looks like the service is quite good. We came here the night before our elopement to find a suit for my (now) husband to wear for the event. Kai was incredibly kind and attentive and helped put together a lovely waistcoat, pant, shirt and tie combination. He took a lot of time with us and never rushed us or pressured us. The shop is lovely just to peruse through. The quality of the clothes are amazing--the materials are super soft and the pants included tailor seams for letting in/out, so we know they will last. I was a little jealous at my husband's outfit and that Kai doesn't also provide bespoke tailored wedding dresses that I could have worn... Definitely will be going back. I don't think these guys sell anything that I could fit into, but I came here to buy a gift and the staff was super friendly. They have a lot of really nice, smaller items that won't break the bank and make a great gift. It's an incredibly cute shop, with old-timey jazz on the speakers and it feels like you walked into a a store 70 years ago. After I made my selection, they did a beautiful job of wrapping my gifts together. I would come back here again if I either lose 100 lbs or want another little gift. read more

Sales lady followed us around like she thought we would steal something, made us feel very uncomfortable. When asked a simple question about the designer of the goods, she gruffly mumbled a response, rolled her eyes and stalked off into the corner. Otherwise, some very fine and well made items in here, my wife and I had our eye on a fine pen, beautiful wool overcoat, scented candle, and bespoke wallet but quickly opted out and left the store after feeling unwelcome. I'm unsure if she thought we were in the wrong place because we were women and it was a menswear store, but surely in this age, especially in NYC we have entered a postgendered society where :gasp: women may considered a purchase of wool trousers! Considering I was wearing a pair of selvedge jeans of equivalent make and value to the general aesthetic of the store, you would think she would have ran to us with dollar signs in her eyes. Kai D is honestly as good as it gets, I was impressed form the moment I walked in. All of Kai's clothes are handmade, and of the highest quality. His wool and cashmere hail from the Bacci Mill, a textile mill just outside of Florence. His cotton twill originates from the Sondria province f Northern Italy, bordering the Alps. It's so clean that it requires no processing. Kai and Mon are both extremely knowledgable and friendly. They take the time to educate you about their clothing, where it comes from, and explain how to care for it to make it last a lifetime. Kai's designs are timeless, and I feel proud wearing his clothing. People are always asking me, "I love your outfit, where did you get it?" My response: "Kai D Utility of course!" I guarantee that you will not be disappointed, even if you pop in just to take a look around. Do not be alarmed by the price tag, it's not expensive when you consider the longevity, quality, and service. The bottom line is, you pay for what you get. I've bought a few garments from them and I'll be back for sure. Everything is really well made, and the service is very friendly and hands-on, but at the same time without feeling any pressure. I love the style of their clothes and the shop (very old world, vintage Americana and vintage British workwear styles), rustic features, complete with funny inspirational quotes plastered around the store. Great store for anyone seeking a kind of old-world look yet with modern twists. The owner, Kai, and his partner are super sweet and helpful, always going out of their way to provide a very customized shopping experience. They offer tailoring in addition if something doesn't fit quite right. I'm also proud to support any local businesses (they design and make all their stuff in a studio in town), and rock some garments that aren't typical off-the-rack shit. It's not cheap but I think the prices are fair given the quality and consideration that goes into them. Highly recommended. read more

Let me start by saying that three years ago I lived down the street from this store and happened to walk in one day. I remember speaking to Kai about fit and quality, and I appreciated the level of detail he seemed to put into each product. I tried on his "simple rugged white shirt" and it fit me like a glove. Yes, it was $200. But in that moment, I felt I had never tried on a shirt that fit me so well. It was the most expensive impulse buy I'd ever made, but three years later I still can't believe the quality and fit of that shirt. Cut to three years later. Last week I was in New York and decided to stop in to buy a few more of these perfect shirts. I told the woman working there about my simple rugged white shirt and how well it fit me, but she informed me they didn't have my size** and they weren't planning to make that shirt again. Fair enough. It's been three years and styles change. I then asked about the fit of the other shirts and whether it was the same as the simple rugged white shirt. She told me that none of the other shirts would fit me as well because Kai was no longer making his shirts in the same slim cut. Now, she said, the shirts were boxier with more cloth in the arms. I decided to try on one of the shirts so that I could see for myself. Sure enough, it was boxy and had way too much room in the arms and shoulders. Going down to a smaller size wouldn't help me, she said, because it would be too tight on my chest. So basically, Kai just stopping making shirts that fit me, which is a real shame. When I lightheartedly told her that I imagined many guys in NYC had a similar body type as me (6'1", 170 lbs), she disagreed. She actually told me that everyone in Williamsburg works out way too much, so that's why they had to change the fit of their shirts. First of all, based on her inaccurate description of Williamsburg, you'd think you were at a body building convention. Secondly, what a weird thing to tell a customer. Are you inferring that I don't work out enough? Or just that you no longer feel my body shape fits the majority of your clientele? When I asked if they made custom clothing, she shot me down immediately: "No." I found this woman unhelpful and slightly rude. Obviously I left without purchasing anything. Kai, I'm not sure what happened, but I hope some day you bring back the slim cut to your shirts. If you do, I'll buy several from you (but probably not from the other woman working there). **Just wanted to point out that the woman told me they didn't have any slim white rugged shirts in my size (medium). But when I got home, I saw that it's available on Kai's website. I have no idea why she would tell me they're out of shirts when the website says otherwise. read more

I have been admiring a jacket at KAID for a few weeks and was ready to pick it up on my way home. The salesperson seemed uninterested by my interest, didn't say Hi how are you, nor offered to have the sleeves tailored when I said the sleeves were long. Wonderful gem of a store located in the heart of Williamsburg. Most of clothes are all made and tailored inside the store. The tailoring, the textures and colors as well as the "attitude" of the clothing is smart, very current yet classic, and impeccably made. Everything is there from shirts and handmade ties, to beautiful shoulder bags, scarves, t shirts and jeans. My favorites were the deep Indigo Print dyed shirt And a Floral/ Camouflage jacket! The owner himself, Kai, was there to answer all my questions and help with fitting and finding the right looks and sizes for me. I'm a fan. It's tough to find a solid men's clothing boutique here in the city. I've wandered into some on occasion but find that their styles are too androgynous and concept for my taste. I like durable, understated clothes that appreciates. This store was a great surprise. I discovered it the old fashioned way, walking down the sidewalk, and left with a coat after having searched online and in brick-and-mortars for weeks. My coat was made here in New York, and the designer also partners with local charities for the youth, something that jived with my MPA background. I will also add that the clerk that helped me was friendly and helpful, we talked about the lack of good mens boutiques. Prices are above J. I just encountered this brand not long ago, and I have to say, finally somebody pays real attention to details! Kai D's focus and passion on the theme "Made in New York" really pay off on his collection through out the years. They are designed in New York, and made in New York. Love the vintage style, or should I say, "artisan style". The only draw back for me is I can only wear the t-shirt collection since I'm a 6ft+ big guy. My husband HATES to shop for clothes and gets extremely frustrated whenever he tries things on from other stores. On a whim one day while waiting for a movie at the Williamsburg Cinemas we walked into Kai D. and looked around. My husband, Sean, was instantly taken with the utilitarian yet clean design look of Kai's clothes. He tried on a pair of pants and the rest is history. I love orchard street and Kai D is a great addition to the amazing stores that are on it. Really unique store with really well made clothing, you can tell alot of time was put into every piece. The stores decor is unlike other, really special and authentic to the lines feel of utilitarian workwear. I was visiting Brooklyn on vacation. I told my wife I was looking for a pair of brown slacks/pants for work and just to run around town. It was the end of a long day and we were just trying to kill time before dinner before I stumbled into this store. Immediately the layout and look of the store attracts me. He hangs some of his pieces up in a wall as if he were laying out pieces on a bed. Kai came up to me and introduced himself. Very friendly and very helpful in picking out clothes and giving you the lowdown on the details of each piece. Each piece is designed by him and made in New York. Longer story long, I found the exact pants I was searching for and couldn't have been happier. I wish I lived in Brooklyn because I would eventually buy everything in the store. The quality of the pieces surpasses that of many competitors. Even for their current collection, S/S 2013, the chambray/denim use is on FIRE. Other guys try to recreate this classic look and fail. I stumbled upon Kai D's shop today and was impressed with the attention to detail in all of his designs. Each button down and blazer has a subtle uniqueness but not in a polarizing way. Its a great balance of original yet classic looks that fit beautifully. I ended up purchasing the Roebling Jacket after pacing back and forth for a good 30 minutes trying to convince myself it wasn't worth the price but in the end I couldn't resist.
