Really good chicken gyro. The size was huge though. Gets really hard to eat the way it's made - basically like a big open taco. Fries tasted great too - with that simple homemade taste. This is inside The Cart Blocks square. There's some shared covered seating in the square. And ample street parking in the 1-2 blocks surrounding it. read more

This food cart is in a pod and at first it doesn't jump out at you. I love Mediterranean food, so I lingered a little at the menu. I was excited to see dolma, which I had been absolutely craving lately, and samosas. I ordered both. The food was made to order, (except the dolma) and the service took about 5-7 minutes. If you would like to eat right away, there are several picnic tables available in a community area in the middle of the pod. There were people who appeared to be eating on their lunch breaks and families with small children enjoying the outdoors and atmosphere. I had beef samosas, which were new to me. I have only had vegetarian before. They were crispy, fresh, and filled with ground beef and minced onions. I got 5 samosas for $14 and 7 dolma with cucumber & yogurt sauce for $7. It was way too much food for me to eat in one sitting, so I had the rest for leftovers. I had another samosa cold for dinner with the leftover dolma. The next morning I warmed the last two samosas in a pan. They were delicious as leftovers. If 5 stars = crave-worthy, then I can't imagine giving anything less. With so many choices and yummy smelling food it can be hard to make a decision, so I turned to trusty Yelp as a guide. I saw Kafta House had 5 stars off the bat so I had to go with them! On to the food! I asked the clerk which rice plate he recommended. He said chicken shawarma so I went with that. As I expected, it was super delicious! 1st stop on my mini-crawl to try different food carts in DT PDX. The owner here hooked me with a sample of lamb, and that was enough to get me hooked! The way he cooked it had the sample of lamb melt in my mouth and bursting full of flavors. After that sample I ordered the lamb gyro. The breading in the gyro did not have me as stuffed as I usually am when I eat any form of carbs, there was generous amount of meat in it as well, with a nice balance of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. What topped it off for me was the substance added on top of that did it for me. Something I really appreciated about visiting Kafta House food cart was being able to talk to the owner and have a very personable conversation with him as he cooked. Among the many food carts at the large food cart pod along SW 10th Avenue, I picked out Kafta House to try. Kafta is one of my favorite Middle Eastern food items, so a cart with the word "Kafta" in its name was an easy choice for me. Looking at their menu with pictures was helpful because I saw what a "saj" was. I had never heard of it before. I ordered a Kafta Saj, with grilled kafta, lettuce, tomato, and onion. A saj is essentially like a gyro, with the same ingredients except it is long, skinny, and tightly wrapped. . .instead of being wide, loose, and floppy like a gyro. Really, it's much tidier and easier to eat than a gyro. The kafta at Kafta House was flavorful and moist, befitting of the name of their cart. I was also impressed with the friendliness of the guys working there. . .smiles all around. I'll be going back. read more

In a sea of shawarma places in the area, I will say, it was pretty smart of this one to give out samples, so I could tell the quality up front and then decide to buy some even though we were on our way to get something else at the time. Specifically, I'd never had a "saj" before (or even heard of it), so clearly had to try that. It was quite tasty, and *relatively* large, but I was spoiled by Small Pharoah's in both food-to-price ratio and in overall deliciousness, and it totally doesn't compare to their sandwiches in either category. Infinitely easier to eat without it falling apart, though, I'll give it that. Not an enormous amount of food for $8, though, just a decent amount. It was slightly more flavorful meat, though (but only slightly - both were excellent, Small Pharoah's just added more flavorful *other* stuff, making it now my gold standard for this sort of sandwich). read more
