Growing up, ballpark food meant hot dogs and peanuts--which, don't get me wrong, still hits--but who's going to pass up Mediterranean food on a perfect SoCal day? I had been wanting to try Kabobaholic for a while, and finally got my shot at Angel Stadium during the Savannah Bananas game. I went with the falafel bowl, my gal ordered the chicken bowl, and of course we had to get the feta fries (more on those in a second). The falafel was the standout for me. Too often, falafel just tastes like... fried. You don't really get the depth--the cumin, coriander, garlic, all the things that are supposed to make it pop. This was the opposite. Super flavorful, well-seasoned, and actually distinct. Add in the sauces and fresh salad, and it made for a perfect ballpark dinner. And then the fries... next level. Let's be honest, fries are usually just filler. Not here. These were packed with flavor, and the feta gave it that extra bite that made you keep going back for more. Really, really good. I attended Dreamstate, a trance festival in Long Beach at Queen Mary. Kabobaholic was one of the food vendors at the two-day event. I initially was super pumped to try out this food truck. One, I love Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food. Two, they have good reviews on Yelp. Three, how can you say no to a name like Kabobaholic. Unfortunately, Kabobaholic underwhelmed a bit. Ambiance (N/A): Since it's a food truck, ambiance is not part of the experience. Service (4/5): Serving a lot of hungry people at a music festival isn't easy. People don't want to wait long, yet they also want their food to be tasty. They had a little table set out in front of the food truck where I placed your order. You were then given a slip with your number that they would call out when your food was ready. I waited a reasonable amount of time for my order. Drinks (N/A): I didn't order any beverages. Food (3/5): I'm a sucker for loaded fries. So when I saw their gyro fries (which are halal by the way) on the menu, it was a no brainer. Fries, gyro meat, pickles, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. Sounds like a winner to me. And it was a winner in the sense that it was a generous portion. Which is part of what I was looking for. I wanted a filling dinner to last me for a long night out. Mission accomplished there. The gyro meat was sliced thin and flavorful, the veggies were fresh, and you can't ever go wrong with tzatziki sauce. The problem? The thick-cut fries were undercooked. Given that they were the main part of the meal, it took away from the entire experience significantly. It's hard to deliver at a busy festival. The ground beef gyro is a joke. The ground beef was SO flavorless and they put so much of it in the gyro, I could not physically eat it without taking it out. That's how you know your meat is cheap- when you load it up to the point you can't even see your sandwich. The tzatziki is alright. It's better at CAVA. I was so excited to eat this food after hearing so many things but the food is not good it is raw my chicken was completely raw which sure you can pick out but that's stkll cross contamination. I went to let them know just to fox their error and they yelled so rudely at me and my youngest daughter who found the raw meat. I am sampling the food trucks at my office complex at Lakeshore Towers in Irvine. Kabobaholic was present on a day I didn't feel like driving, so I decided to give it a whirl. I ordered the falafel bowl ($11). They also offer wraps for $9, and you can order your choice of protein (beef, chicken or lamb). The falafel was very good. It was nicely seasoned and they were hot & crispy. The only downsides are, I would have expected a full salad be inc for the price. In addition, I would have expected pita bread. I went back to the food truck to ask for a cooked chicken and someone beat me to it. I was not the only one! Someone else went to complain about the same thing.
