Kake Udon Tempura Options: Carrot and Potato, Curry Potato, Japanese Mushroom

I arrived on the grand opening day. Set up is fairly simple, you place your udon bowl order when you first arrive. Then it's similar to a mini cafeteria set up. While the kitchen is making your food you have the option to grab a tray and load up on some al a carte rotating tempura options. When you arrive at the register you receive your food, pick your utensils, options for some seasonings and tempura sauce are at the register when you pay. I got the kake udon bowl (noodles and broth) and it was fantastic. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a good amount of chew on them. And the dashi broth that is made in house had a great depth of flavor. I can't wait to come back to check consistency.

This restaurant has the potential to be a staple of the Charlotte food scene in my opinion. The concept is (at least to my knowledge) nascent in Charlotte, (fast and convenient udon). I'll start the review with the most striking moment of my experience; the tempura udon was not edible. It was so salty I could only eat two bites of the noodles and broth and felt sick. The only flavor was salt, it was outright bad. In contrast to the tempura udon the curry udon was much better. The curry was mild flavored and was filled with a lot of juicy beef. The noodles were a good consistency and was a overall solid dish. The fried food was also really good, filled with flavor of seafood, richness and batter it enhanced the flavor of the curry udon. The restaurant while totally flunking on the tempura udon, was solid in the other dishes. And that's why I think it has a lot of potential, it's idea is good, the flavors are there, perhaps some extra work on execution could really bring this place to shine. Here are some other suggestions I have for this restaurant, 1. Need different sauces for the fried foods besides tempura sauce. 2. Need additional pickled vegetables, Prehaps Dikon or maybe even Kimchi.

This is an udon spot in the Urban District market. Keep in mind all of these restaurant inside do not accept cash. We ordered the Jjajang udon and tanuki udon, all of their menu options are 6-12 dollars each. The tanuki udon is the kake udon with Tempura flakes, which were crunchy and delicious. The soup was on the salty side, but had decent flavor anf went along with the noodles which were tasty and well cooked. The jjajang udon was lacking in flavor and did not taste like black bean jjajang sauce. It did not taste authentic and was not as sweet as expected. They have tempura options that can be ordered a la carte. The tempura was delicious and crispy. The only complaint i have is the wait time for the food, which was 20+ minutes for the two bowls of udon. The presentation is nice and there are plenty of tables to sit at. The vibe is nice, a cool place to bring your friends, but the food was not up to par with our expectations given the wait time.

Decor and bathrooms were nice. Service was great. The food was very good- I enjoyed the starter we got: Tiradito Nikkei- it wasn't at all what I was expecting for a ceviche but it was delicious nonetheless. I got the salmon entree and it was fantastic- I inhaled it. My boyfriend got the sirloin dish and it came out veeeery rare (he ordered medium rare). We could have asked them to cook it more, so no harm there, but the meat was very chewy so he didn't enjoy his meal as much. I got a pisco mule and that was delicious, I love the cups and plates they use- very aesthetic. Would come back, but I do prefer the restaurant Yunta a bit more for the same type of food and atmosphere.

It was the best dish I've had in a very long time. The rice was very flavorful too and the left overs heated up well. My boyfriend had the Nigiri Flight and Kimchi Shrimp and he was very pleased with his meal too. We enjoyed the craft cocktails too. Service is pretty fast. I hesitated giving the full five stars due to the DJ. It is a very small space to have a DJ in the front. It made it very difficult to have a conversation. I would not recommend coming here if you are on a first or second date or are trying to catch up with friends. You won't be able to have a conversation over the music. Even with the loud music my boyfriend and I will definitely be back but will likely try to sit outside where it is not as loud.

Great food and such a fun experience!…read more We loved trying a variety of foods and cooking them ourselves making it a unique experience. We had great service. Our waiter had a few tables and did not stop all night from drinks to food he was always there to help up. The broccoli with melted cheese and cheese corn were some of our favorites! The chicken did not seem to have a lot of flavor/ sauce, but we may have overcooked it. All of the steaks were tasty and delicious!!

I've enjoyed Korean barbecue many times, so when I saw the price, I thought I had found a great midday option. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to expectations. The happy hour kalbi turned out to be four small pieces of meat for $9.95, which I had to cook myself. A bowl of rice was an additional charge, and there were no sides, vegetables, soup, or salad included. I left the restaurant still hungry, which is never a good sign after lunch. What disappointed me most was the lack of guidance and hospitality. As someone new to Japanese-style barbecue, I asked a few simple questions to understand what I was ordering. When I confirmed this was the happy hour portion, the server said yes--but didn't explain the serving size or suggest additional items. A little coaching would have gone a long way. At one point, when I asked whether the meal came with sides like banchan or rice, I was told, "This is not Korean barbecue." I completely understand the distinction now, but the tone felt curt rather than helpful. Hospitality is about helping guests navigate something unfamiliar, not making them feel like they should already know. I also ordered iced water with lemon, and the lemon never arrived...only the ice water. Was this an omen of what's to come?? Another frustration was the parking situation. I paid for parking through ParkMobile outside the restaurant, only to discover after entering that parking validation was available inside. That information would have been much more useful if it had been communicated clearly before guests park or pay. From a customer experience standpoint, it feels like something that could easily be improved with better signage--lead with the good stuff. The location itself is also somewhat isolated. While technically in Uptown, it's not in a particularly walkable or high-traffic area, so most guests will need to park in a garage or pay for street parking. There isn't much nearby other than an apartment complex above the restaurant, which makes clear parking instructions and strong service even more important. To be fair, the restaurant was clean, and the meat itself was flavorful. The concept of Japanese BBQ is interesting, and I now understand that this style is very different from Korean BBQ, with smaller, à-la-carte portions designed to be built into a meal. That said, the overall experience felt transactional rather than welcoming. I left hungry--and disappointed--not because of the food quality, but because the service and communication could have been better at several points along the way. This visit felt like a missed opportunity. With a little more attentiveness, clearer guidance, and stronger customer engagement, the experience could have been completely different. Don't let one restaurant deter you. Life is short--get out there and eat.
