Honestly, this was my first time in Optimist Hall and wow am I impressed! I was in the mood for poke, and the one by my house was closing in a few minutes, and found this place on Yelp just 15min away from me - figured Id give it a shot, and glad I did! They have a set menu option OR a build your own, and opted for a build your own! Staff was diligent in taking my ingredients AND preparation was FAST! All sushi burriots come with mixed greens automatically, and I ordered a sushi rice base, with salmon for my protein, with ponzu sauce (underwhelming, unsure if they remembered it), and embellished with: cucumber, edamame beans, grilled pineapple (+$.50 - not enough to be worth an up charge), and avocado (+$.75 - not enough to be worth an up charge). For the "finish it up" I opted for sesame seeds and tempura chips which I feel like should be relabeled as tenpura crisps.. but still a good added crunch! My burrito, after tax and tip, was like $21. Next time I wont be adding pineapple and avocado as I feel the cost to add did not reflect the quantity added to my burrito, but content with the decent amount of salmon pieces! Then when they did remake it never let us know for 20 minutes and when I went to ask for it responded "over there". I have been getting the "sushi burrito" more often, though when they first opened I used to get the small poke bowl (which is fine just too much rice for my specific taste) I've walked in and placed my order around lunch time (~20/25 minutes from when I step in line to the time I received my food) or if I'm in a rush I'll place an online order & get a text when it's ready! I appreciate how this concept takes a Japanese concepts and makes it approachable to someone new to the cuisine. I enjoy the relative consistency. Only minor inconsistency is the amount of sauce that is incorporated in to the burrito itself, that could easily be fixed with asking for extra sauce, or using the low sodium soy sauce provided. Items taste very fresh and crisp. Typically I alter between panko chicken or fried tofu for my protein choice. And I consistently ask for no "mixed greens" it's hard to keep the burrito intact with pulling the greens out of the burrito and compromising the integrity. I keep coming back because it's a filling lunch that does not have me feeling heavy. Service is nice, though I'm typically trying to get "in and out" I love how they call the names loud and clear. This is my go-to place for food when I visit Optimist Hall. I have visited Zukku three visits in a row and am not done yet. My Dynamite Bowl today was absolutely divine. I could have used a few more shrimp, but I really can't complain. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish, as always, and will be back for more. Overall, Optimist Hall has a little something for everyone. There is ample seating inside and even more seating and tables outside. It has a family vibe so that children can visit, play, and exert their perennial energy. Parking, well, the signs say 90 minutes free, then you start to pay. IDK how they know who needs to pay and who doesn't. There wasn't too much cream cheese which I appreciated. The Flaming Hot Burrito was just ok for me. I felt like there was more lettuce than anything else on the roll and I wish they had a burrito without it. I really liked the addition of flaming hot Cheeto dust on the outside. The sushi felt pretty expensive for the small portion sizes, but I guess that's fairly standard for Optimist Hall. If you're at Optimist Hall and want sushi, try one of their rolls. read more

Since it's been awhile since I last checked out Optimist Hall, decided to swing in to see what's new... This unique Japanese vendor was something I've been meaning to try since my last visit. Not only a cool name, but a cool concept...featuring Sushi Burrito! Decided to try "The Gulf" Sushi Burrito, with a side order of Shrimp Tempura. Well, hate to say it, but it sounded cooler than it tasted. Not sure why, but I expected more. It's good, but not as good as I thought it'd be. Think I'll stick with the standard sushi rolls. Sadly, the Shrimp Tempura was even a bigger disappointment. The batter was so thick...and not quite the 4-star restaurant standard. I will say, however, that I'm still impressed with this place for many other reasons. In general, Optimist Hall has plenty of wide, open space (with great, distanced indoors and outdoors seating), and seems to be on top of their Covid-19 sanitary precautions...but I thought Zukki was exceptional. There are still many items on the menu I wanna try...in addition to their variety of sushi burritos! In all the sushi places in Charlotte, this location might rank towards the bottom. I was overly disappointed throughout the entire experience, and in a place like Optimist Hall, if your're not brining your A-game, there are plenty of other tasty options. We went on a quiet Monday - late afternoon/early evening, and I ordered two rolls - spicy tuna and a spicy shrimp fancier roll. My husband ordered from a different vendor, and was able to order, eat and toss his trash before I even got my order - and there was no one else ordering around the same time as me. I want to say it took over 30 minutes to get two rolls made. The rolls that I got were of good size, their flavor was bland with an intermittent kick of inedible spice. I'm not sure what spice seasoning they used on the spicy tuna, but it ended up being inedible the 3rd piece in, which was ok, because there was a slightly off putting smell. The tempura shrimp in the other roll was cooked nicely, but the cucumber had its hard outer skin still on it, and it gave it a rubbery texture. The price for the rolls was higher than many other places in Charlotte, and the quality was definitely not there. Unfortunately, I think I am going to keep ordering my sushi from other establishments in Charlotte rather than this spot. read more

These are some pretty good pork dumplings with a beautiful presentation. A tiny bit crunchier than I usually prefer but tasty nonetheless. As you can tell from the menu, the concept here is kitchen as art studio. Since I only wanted a quick snack, I wasn't prepared to drop a Twenty (with tax and beverage) on a bowl, roll, or "sushi burrito?!" for this visit. The "express yourself" poke bowls (a current food trend) and boba teas seem to be a point of pride here at Zukku. Scrupulously clean and well organized and manned by a friendly staff, Zukko is definitely worth revisiting again, sometime when I'm hungrier. It leaves an interesting taste for your mouth. Of course this might get you full because of the sushi rice.
