Tonight I unfortunately dined at Aroy Thai/ Sushi Machi, located in a shopping plaza off East independence Freeway. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was completely empty during my visit, aside from a few takeout orders being picked up, which didn't feel like a great sign.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I started with the tuna tataki, but it didn't deliver. The tuna tasted low quality, was over-peppered, and felt hastily prepared with inconsistent slice thickness, the searing was not even. The pad thai combo with chicken and beef was even worse. It was unbelievably sweet and unappetizing, I could barely eat it and left more than half on the plate. You can see in my photos that the noodles were almost swimming in sauce, which only made the overly sweet flavor more overwhelming. Overall, nothing I tried felt worth returning for. I'll stick to my usual spots next time. Hopefully, the restaurant can work on improving the quality and flavors for a better experience. read more

Definitely in my top 2. There was a good serving size of protein in my pad thai. The spicy levels seemed appropriate (I got no spicy but my husband got a medium spicy dish and enjoyed it). I really enjoyed my pad Thai for dinner (and lunch the next day). It had a great peanut flavor and good textured noodles. My favorite dish though was the summer roll.. yum! That peanut sauce is so addicting that I put it in with my pad Thai. The service for my call in order was exceptional. After a 45-minute commute in sound, it was so good that I had to try it in person. I came on a Friday night, and they needed to be packed with dine-in customers. The place is clean but small and quaint. Nestled in a strip mall, it isn't the ambiance that keeps people coming but the food. The lone waiter was efficient and prompt. The star of the show was the food. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and the mango sticky rice. The drunken noodles were served piping hot and bursting with flavor. The wait staff were as quick as you could dream for in taking our orders, and returned with our food just as quickly! You can also see that it's inconsistent between the two dishes, one is darker than the other. We've had 5 people tried the dish and they all complained it was salty. The only good and well balanced, edible dish was the pad Thai. Love that they put aluminum foil under the food so it wouldn't leak through the boxes. Since COVID-19 started I have continued to support local and order delivery or pickup. When I need my Thai fix Aroy has been my go to spot. They currently offer delivery, as for dine in not sure, but everything arrives piping hot and just as fresh as I remember when I dined in. Stand outs for my are always the Crab Rangoon, and I love their Thai Fried Rice. Unlike Chinese fried rice it includes stewed tomatoes, cucumbers and lime. This is a hidden gem I found on the Yelp Charlotte top 100 list. It's hidden in a strip mall off of Independence Blvd. Don't judge it from the outside. They seem to mostly do take out now. There was only one other table there when we were. The service was very friendly. We started with a Thai Tea which was amazing. I recommend saving it to drink with the spicy food. We were with a group and decided to do a big family style meal. For appetizers, we started with the spring rolls, the Papaya Salad, and the Larb Kai. We ordered both the Papaya Salad and the Larb Kai hot and they were both incredibly spicy and delicious. For entrees, we got the Pad See Ew (beef), Drunken Noodles (chicken), Green Curry (chicken), and Pineapple Fried Rice (combo). Everything was amazing. The Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles were my favorite and the Green Curry was very good as well. We ordered everything hot, but the entrees weren't nearly as spicy as the appetizers. My favorite thai place in Charlotte, hands down. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I am pretty much addicted to this place. I order either pad thai or drunken noodles with occasional order of red curry. Their pad Thai is closer to the authentic version than any other pad thai I've tried in the area. Most Americanized pad Thai will use ketchup as part of the ingredient-- hence the red color. But authentic pad Thai shouldn't be that color. I'm obsessed with authentic Thai food and go out of my way to buy palm sugar from Thailand just to make my own pad thai sauce. With that said, is this going to taste like the true pad thai in Thailand? No. But it's the closest thing you'll get in Charlotte. Drunken noodles here are the same thing as pad kee mao in most Thai restaurants. I think other places call the wide flat noodles with broccoli "drunken noodles." Not here. What they can drunk noodles is other places' "pad kee mao." So keep that in mind when you order. Anyway, seriously addicted to this. My family, friends, everyone can't stop ordering this. I went with a group of friends, having been on a list of interests for a while now. That being said, this is mostly a to go establishment. However, there is a table there to use but you just have to bus it yourself and pickup your order at the front as it comes packaged to go. It is super convenient in that regard. All of the food came out rather quickly for the five of us. Each dish had a variety of perfectly cooked veggies as well that looked great. However, at the end of the day, none of the dishes blew us away. But, it seemed consistent and delicious all the same. If you order by phone, you must pay because people were placing orders and not coming to pick up. I don't know if I have seen the food rating on the wall because everything is blocked off. The menu could use a face lift as it is pretty beat up and in need of cleaning. I do have to say, the food is not always consistent. HOLY CRAP! I think we just discovered the best Thai Food in Charlotte, PERIOD! That Thai Hot was Real I heard great things about this place but it over-exceeded my expectations. This past weekend as part of Yelp's #FirstTasteFriday we tried out take out from Aroy Thai. Background: I LOVE Thai food. Growing up it was almost always where we went if we were going out to dinner. The flavors have such nuance and the balance of fresh with slow cooked is excellent when done right. Well, Aroy Thai did it right. Even with the extra travel time to our house, all 3 dishes we ordered were perfect. We had: T3 - Drunken Noodles with Beef, Medium spicy - Perfectly done noodles with just the right amount of sauce and tender, not chewy, beef T7 - Green Curry with Chicken, Mild - So flavorful and so well done. I literally drank the sauce after my husband finished his portion. I could not believe how good the eggplant was. And I don't even like eggplant typcially! T6 - Red Curry with Chicken, Medium spicy - Also incredibly flavorful and stuffed full of veggies. We did ask for extra veggies and were not disappointed. Sweet service and spicy food! A small group from my office decided to check out Aroy on Friday afternoon for lunch. We were greeted by the sweetest hostess who immediately pushed two tables together for our party of five and brought us menus, explaining that you order at the front counter and then they bring the food to you. The restaurant itself is really cozy. It almost feels like a country-style, home cooking place rather than a Thai restaurant, but no complaints about that here! For lunch, I went with the Totally Red Curry, medium spicy, with chicken and added veggies for $1 more. The lunch portion is huge and comes with two pork gyoza and white rice. (All for $12 WITH tip, y'all. Such a great deal!) The medium spice level was perfect for me! It had some heat but also didn't burn my face off. They have five levels from no spice on one end to Thai spicy on the other. Not going to lie, Thai spicy terrifies me. Every one else in my group ordered the Pad Thai with various takes on the protein and spice level. Each variety looked delicious. I may try the tofu next time! One particularly kind friend shared a bit of her Thai Iced Tea with me. Holy cow, y'all! Hook me up to an IV and just pump that stuff into me 24-7. It is like crack! Sweet and creamy but with a fresh, light tea flavor at the same time. I'm hooked! After our meal, the lovely hostess was kind enough to bring us a complementary dessert of fried dough and a condensed milk dipping sauce. It was the perfect sweet ending to the meal, cooling down my mouth which was a little tingly from my medium spice curry at that point. We are excited to have Aroy so close by our East. I'm half Thai and I grew up eating best Thai food everyday that my mom cooked it for me. This is 100% authentic thai cuisine...the flavor of the green thai curry is on point. They roasted the dry chili to give it more smoky flavor. I like to eat my green curry with sticky rice "1.50$" which makes the experience even better. The curry puffs were excellent too, not spicy, it comes with sweet chili sauce, and is very easy to eat with your hands without making a mess. My husband had deep fried chicken with sticky rice and it comes with a sweet chili sauce and another complimentary sauce with fresh herbs in it...after you dip the chicken in the sauce it has a good balance. However, eating deep fried chicken by itself might be a little too salty so I recommend to eat with a salad like a papaya salad. read more

I was excited to try this new Thai restaurant in town. Unfortunately the food didn't lift up to my expectations of authentic Thai food. We ordered a papaya salad (3 stars), a shrimp Pad Thai (1 star) and Deep Fried Tilapia with garlic sauce (3 stars). The papaya salad is pretty good, but pricey for a salad without any shrimp in it. The Pad Thai is a major disappointment. Not only it's way too sweet, but also the noodle was too soft! We had to ask for fresh lime and drenched it the lime for the Pad Thai to be edible. The only decent dish was the deep fried Tapia with garlic sauce. I can only give 2 stars for the food and 3 starts for the Service and ambiance. Don't sleep on this place! I was in the area and wanted to get some curry on a rainy day. When I first walked in I saw that the restaurant is really cute and clean. Nobody was at the front and waited a while before I was seated, handed a menu. Menu is simple and has some of the classics. I wish they had a lunch menu/prices. I ended up paying $14.95 for one curry and water. I ordered the Panang curry with chicken. I requested the curry to only have broccoli, carrots and onion. It's was really delicious however I was craving for more broth/curry. A couple of bites with rice and it was basically gone. I saw another couple get their curry in a bowl and I got mine in this dish which was pretty hard to eat out of. But all in all, I would definitely come back again to try more on the menu. read more

Solid food, but we got overcharged. We came in early on a not so busy night. We both had a thai iced tea, ordered 2 apps that cost the same and 2 entrees with shrimp that cost the same. The thai iced tea was great, my buddy got coconut milk instead of cream in his and he said it came out well. Both apps were pretty tasty. One was more of an Indian style somosa dish. The other were some shrimp egg rolls which were good, but texture was a little slippery. Onto the entrees, one of got the green curry shrimp, the other got the panang with shrimp. Both were ordered mild, but the green curry certainly had a little more of a kick. Both were extremely good and I'll come back for that alone. This is when it got kind of weird though. Our server said he couldn't split the checks. I tried to show him how easy it would be to just ring up a drink, app and entree for each, but he didn't understand. So then he added the tax a second time and just split that difference. He didn't really understand how taxing us twice wasn't fair either. It was pretty weird, but we got it figured out, or at least close enough. I'll be back, but probably just get a to go order. On the recommendation of a friend. We decided to try Aroy Thai as we love Thai Food, Chicken Pad Thai in particular. It's in a rundown, somewhat ghetto plaza and you could easily miss it if you're not paying attention. The staff is very friendly. The menu is small and simple and the prices seem fair. I ordered a MILD Chicken Pad Thai minus the vegetables, but they still put onions in my order. I didn't turn it away and decided to just eat it as it's not wise to send food back to the kitchen. I took about 3-4 bites and pushed it to the side! It was uncomfortably spicy! I don't understand how you can enjoy food as it burns through your mouth and nose. I had this food at an event before and it was really good. I decided that I wanted to place an order and they have an online ordering option. Once I was putting the order in and it said that I could only pay in cash, which is fine because I did have some money on me. However when I tried to place the order twice it kept saying that it wouldn't go through because they were busy. I decided to drive to see what was going on and when I got there they let me know they had a big order so if I had a small order that I could place it if not then I would have to wait a long time. My order was only for me so they said they would be able to make it for me. However when I told him what my order was the guy told me it was $24, however when I was trying to place the order online it was only $18. He let me know that prices have changed. What doesn't make any sense is how you would let somebody order online and show one price and then when they get there to pay and the food already ready you're charging a higher price which is very misleading and needs to be fixed so beware.
