So to caveat on my recent Google review, this place is horrible. After all of the lackluster dental care that I experienced here where this dental practice had me nearly convinced that my tooth problem was because of "teeth grinding". I will speak my truth over and over again. After all was said and done I had a horrible dental abscess that caused the most excruciating pain that I have ever experienced in my life, and I blame this dental practice. Dr. Murphy spoke with me over the phone while I was in debilitating pain and had the nerve to suggest that he would "fit me in tomorrow for a trigger point injection". But actually they do a brand you never heard of. They said they do both but I don't find them on the provider list on Invisalign website. I've been coming here for almost a decade and can't say enough positive things! Highly recommend!

Came in because a cavity filling came out and was hurting a lot. Wanted to get it filled. The dental assistant took an X-ray. The dentist (Dr. Danziger) came in and said they see the cavity and went ahead and filled it without even telling me which tooth it was... I assumed it was the one where the filling came out, but turns out they MISSED the fact that there was a huge chunk out of my back tooth and drilled and filled an entirely different tooth for a cavity. They claim it was "miscommunication". I came back, and they gave me a temporary filling but still charged me for it. I believe this is some kind of negligence as my tooth with the temporary filling is now slowly decaying over time and could result in a worse condition. Absolutely find a different dentist that won't scam you for your money and not admit to mistakes. read more

I had a great doctor in California but since I moved to Baltimore, I needed a new Dentist. I didn't have any experience of their Dentist here, because when I made an appointment (6 months ago), they scheduled me with the Dental Hygiene person (no idea why). She started examining my teethes and told me I need 4-5 crown and 2 are immediate (costing $$$$$). Also, tested my gum with microscope (which I didn't have any problems with my gums) charged me for it. That's all ! they did absolutely nothing. I went back to my doctor in California in January and he told - my teethes are good and there is no need for any crown. Also, any good dentist can see my gum are healthy and there no need for these tests (I am 25 and have very good dental hygiene). Please be careful about crown and extra charges, as my doctor told me, since it's very expensive, so it is very attractive for Dental Doctor to do it or recommend it more often. Also, just yesterday, after six months I received a bill, which I have no idea for the reason and still no idea why they charged the insurance. I would not recommend them. read more

The good: The office is a very nice space and the staff are friendly. They are very thorough, always keep me informed about what they're doing and what the next steps are. They're also very high tech which allows everything to flow smoothly and makes it easy to keep tabs on everything in your file/dental history. The not so good: I would have given them 5 stars because I do think they are great dentists, but twice now I've had my appointment canceled with no notification until I show up and am told they can't see me. Each time, I have verified that they do indeed have the correct phone number and email address for me, yet somehow I wasn't contacted. In fact this most recent trip, I even clicked 'Confirm' on the confirmation email they sent me a week prior and still no one mentioned anything. It's a huge waste of time for me to leave work and get to their office, only to be told my appointment was canceled. It may be because they are great and thus very busy, but that doesn't excuse it for me. read more

I made an appointment at K Michael Murphy and Associates for a cleaning last month - my first in a few years. I was naturally nervous about my visit. When speaking on the phone to make an appointment, I was told that I had to have x-rays as part of the requirement. I try to avoid x-rays as much as I can for the obvious reasons. I remember explicitly asking them, "so if I don't want to do x-rays, you won't make an appointment for me?" To which they replied, "yes." OK... I thought. That's weird and kind of ridiculous. I was desperate, though, to see someone so I swallowed my pride and made an appointment. The receptionists are very polite and the waiting room is comfortable. That's about the best thing I can say about the place. Moving to the cleaning. The dental hygienist used a DIAGNOdent, which I had never heard of before. This is a sort of laser tool that hygienists can use to detect "early decay" in a tooth. It emits a high pitched tone when it finds a cavity. The hygienist found four cavities, and I was shocked - not to mentioned intimidated and scared by the DIAGNOdent's noise. It was, to put it plainly, awful. PLEASE research DIAGNOdent before you visit this office. I am told by other dentists that this is not a perfect tool. After the hygienist told me I needed 4 fillings at $225 apiece (I am not insured), Dr. Welzel came in and maybe stayed for less than a minute. She looked at my teeth, confirmed with the hygienist the ones that I needed filling, and then left without getting to know me. Maybe I'm biased about this - but I always like developing relationships with my doctors. Dr. Welzel seemed uninterested and too busy to do so. Then, came the price for the visit: $285 for an initial screening and cleaning (without insurance). I asked the receptionist if I could pay what insurance pays, to which she politely said "no" and gave me information on a payment card that I could use since my visit and fillings would run me over $1,000. I paid for the visit and left. Let me be clear about something: I have excellent teeth. I have NEVER had a cavity in my life. I take pride in the care I give to my teeth. I just couldn't believe that I had four cavities in need of fillings! This was going to run me over $800, and as an artist, it was a huge expense. I decided to get a second opinion by a dentist recommended to me by colleagues. In one short visit, he told me I didn't need a single filling. I promised myself I wouldn't write a Yelp review of the place until I got a second opinion. I am disheartened that K Michael Murphy and Associates uses this tool, the DIAGNOdent to determine which teeth need filling instead of the old fashioned method - poking and prodding. I would have done unnecessary drilling if I were to continue there. I am moving my business elsewhere. read more

One of the receptionists is not nice what so ever! I love my doctor yet there seems to be some communication issues with the front of the house staff. Particularly there is one of the receptionists who seems to have a negative attitude all the time and when engaging with her, you have to be extra friendly or else! I am also still experiencing pain with my tooth so I'm not too sure if I will stay at this dentist office as I don't want to continue to get more tooth pain after a procedure when I didn't have any before. The three is because of the above combined with two of the three receptionists being more friendly and welcoming than the third (one mentioned above). In the past 12 years, I've lived in three different cities and changed my dentist a few times until I found Dr. Murphy's office in the fall of 2010. In the fall of 2010, it had been approximately 4 years since I had been to a dentist, but found myself in Baltimore with a chipped front tooth. Finding a good dentist was required ASAP. I initially found Dr. Murphy's office through a simple Google search (probably "sedation dentistry") and they were able to fit me in the next day. Since then, I have been a regular patient of Dr. Megarian and Sherri (dental hygienist). I've gone regularly for check ups, had a few cavities replaced (to the white filling) from my younger years, and recently had a crown procedure. I can honestly say that everyone at the office is great. They remember me and in being extremely thorough and clear on what they are doing, I have almost overcome my fear of going to the dentist. I've been going to this office for 6 years now and I've visited with all of the dentists. Dr. Murphy removed a tooth and that was my only encounter with him, but it was pleasant and efficient. I typically always see Dr. Welzel and I have never been happier with a dentist. She is very caring, gentle, and she truly cares about your comfort. She educates her patients and answers all questions without making you feel rushed. She treats the staff with the same compassion. In fact, I took my son when he was 3 to have his teeth checked out for the first time and Dr. Welzel was so gentle and sweet with him! Recently I had a wisdom tooth extraction with Dr. Merguerian. I was mildly sedated when I had the procedure so I can't tell you how the actual procedure was, but afterwards she was available to me 24/7 by cell or text. I had some complications and unexpected pain and it was wonderful to have my dentist care enough to step away from a wedding to help me with my questions. My husband has used her frequently for extensive dental work and has nothing but rave reviews as well. The office staff is very friendly. I've never had one issue with appointments or cancellations. The office itself is beautiful and very comfortable. I have recommended their services time and time again. I no longer live in the city but I travel for the good care. I was very excited about this place originally. I thought the staff were really nice. It's only a mask for incompetence and malice. After my root canal I experienced terrible pain. I called several times about my issue and was met with indifference. I was told there were no available times to come in. I ended up going to another dentist who informed me I had trauma to my the surrounding teeth. It cost me over 2400 to repair this damage. They took no responsibility for it and when I asked for answers, they stopped taking my call and sent my account to collections. read more

I started seeing Dr. Welzel a few years ago at the recommendation of a friend. Why do I keep coming back? It's the level of care and comfort. First and foremost, I want someone who's more than competent - someone highly skilled at what they do. Dr. Welzel repaired a chipped front tooth and it was impossible to tell there had formerly been a piece broken off the tooth. I had the same procedure done previously by another dentist and it came off after a few months. Other work has been equally great. Secondly, I want a dentist who communicates exactly what's going on, provides options, and makes me feel comfortable about the treatment. I trust her opinion and appreciate her attitude. Dr Murphy will not respond to emergencies when you call after hours. He also will lie to your face that he not doing procedures that you refused but perform them and bill you anyway. He will not respond to your calls of distress, his staff will poo-poo and dismiss all issues. They are not clinical professionals, not sure why they are in charge of your well being. When I sat down for my first examination the hygienist explained how they treated dentistry not by just examining your teeth, but your whole mouth. They went on to do a oral cancer screening, and will try to get you to do a bacterial screening ($25, insurance will NOT cover this). They play around with some tools to check the density of your teeth, etc. At the very end they spend MAYBE 20 minutes cleaning and polishing your teeth. Dr. Murphy seemed a little rushed and rude. If I'd written the review after that trip I would have given them 1 or 2 stars. They seemed a little pushy about adding on extra services much like a used car dealer. And they barely spent any time cleaning my teeth! Because I hadn't found a better dentist yet I went back 6 months later for another checkup. This time the hygienist didn't try to sell me as many miscellaneous services, but did again recommend me get some fillings. (They wanted me to do this last time, I just never set the appointment to get it done). I was a little surprised that I needed so much work, but because I'm not a dentist I'll never really know whether the work was necessary or not. This time I had the fillings done. Dr. Dawn Merguerian seemed pretty skilled as the fillings were not too painful. Dawn was very pleasant and friendly throughout. If you do visit this office, I recommend you see her in particular. Finally the last time I went in for a cleaning things went very smoothly, with no up-selling of any type. So in summary: nice staff, clean establishment, and skilled professionals. The wait time for an appointment is only a week or two. Be wary of them trying to add on services - if it sounds gimmicky, it probably is. In particular do NOT waste your $25 on the bacterial examination. In my experience, once they figured out I wasn't a sucker, they quit the pushy sales tactics. read more

Dentist trips can bore your nerves and leave u with pangs and such, but at leas tthe satff here is uber-friendly, knowledgeable and helpful to keep your choppers lookin good as well as the icky stuff that causes the yuck mouth out. the bacteria x-ray exam is worth it, as well as the staff taking the time to really do a job right while they're poking arond in there. I reviewed Dr. Murphy's practice on Google last time I went, but since I just got back from another appointment, I figured I'd check in with Yelp as well. Everyone in the office is great. I came to them after neglecting my teeth through my 20's and early 30's. I was apprehensive...but they were great. They did a nice job helping me get back into the swing of things and fixed some stuff I'd let go. Now I look forward to going back. Front desk was very helpful with insurance. Casie (my hygienist) was both personal and professional. And Dr. Murphy is a no-nonsense doc who makes you feel at home without being patronizing. As someone who writes in the dental space, I can confirm they are all clinically skilled. I don't think they're the least expensive, but most of it's covered by insurance, and the slightly higher office fees are totally worth it. read more

I bought a Groupon for teeth whitening and ever since then this has been my dentist. Dr. Michael Murphy is by far the best dentist I've ever had. I hate going to the dentist I'm scared of the dentist because I don't have great teeth and never once has he judged me or said I have horrible teeth. He's always said we're making progress and now I have perfectly straight front teeth that are beautiful. I had a snaggletooth before and with root canals and crowns they've all been fixed and I can't say more fabulous things about this dentist and office. The waiting room is very nice but like someone else said you're never there for too long the receptionist's are fabulous and it's just an overall amazing place I would recommend this to anyone and everyone. read more

Unfortunately, I have had the challenge of visiting with many many dentists. Start with the environment that the office provides with the coffee, water and pleasant sitting area, but that is not what makes them special. I was there once and my second visit I was recognized as I approached the desk, welcomed and invited to the sitting room. I felt immediately welcomed. Then the expertise of the staff, the pleasant but professional manner in engaging you is wonderful. Engaging you is the key here, you are not a patient, a chart, you are the guy with the mouth full of issues and we want to really think about how to best help you. read more

Going to Dr. Welzel has changed the way I take care of my teeth. She is a phenomenal dentist who is patient, caring, and clearly loves what she does. This is also reflected in the staff who are equally kind and wonderful. Everyone thoroughly explains procedures, and takes the time to make sure you are clear with what is going on, and makes sure that you are comfortable. I am always happy to go to the dentist now, even when something unpleasant needs to be done, such as a crown or root canal, (both of which I have had done at this office) I know that I am in amazing care. I can't say enough positive things about this dentist office and the staff. They are truly wonderful, and I am always so happy to refer someone who needs a dentist by saying, "i love my dentist, they're the best!" My experience has only been with Dr. Margarian, who is great. I had a very complicated problem with a root canal that had gone bad (from a bad, bad dentist in Houston, no surprise). It had formed a "silent abcess" that was eating away my jaw bone (but without pain). This was sufficiently interesting that I was looked at at the Houston dental school -- they did minor surgery on me (basically digging a hole in my gum) to figure out the problem, and left me with no painkillers after! That was terrible. So after moving to Baltimore, I found this place and am happy to say they took care of the problem EXTREMELY well. It took over a year in total (my choice, to space out payments), and included bone grafting and placing an implant. But now I have the new tooth and everything is just great. They really take the time to explain everything, and will happily give you full estimates of the cost (which was very helpful as I planned everything with my FSA). Dawn is also very nice and personable, as are all the assistants. Never had a bad experience with any office staff. And the office is super nice and state of the art. These days it's hard to get anyone at a reception desk even look up when you walk in. I have been to a number of offices in which there is no appreciation or courtesy of my business. I found this office when looking for a sedation dentist because of my overwhelming anxiety about getting work done to my mouth and I am SO happy I did. Everyone is super friendly and helpful, the office is beautiful and full of features to make you comfortable (Bose noise-canceling headphones, neck pillows, Pandora radio). And sedation dentistry is AMAZING. I was really nervous about it but they explained everything really well and being sedated was so easy and not scary at all and I strongly recommend it for anyone with dental anxiety! read more

My experience with this dentist was troubling and frustrating to say the least. Everyone is friendly and as nice as they can be which should have been an indicator that they were going to rob me blind. I told them that they were not in my dental network but I was there with an employee to get some work done on a recommendation from my boss. I was told that my insurance would cover a cleaning and that it wouldn't cost me anything. After my visit (they didn't even clean my teeth btw) I was presented with a $181 bill which I paid before leaving. I did this to make the whole thing go away because at this point I realized that it was a racket and a snake oil sales pitch. 2 years later I find a derogatory remark on my credit report from this dentist for a $78 bill which I knew nothing about. I flat out refused to pay it while it continued to ding my credit report. I disputed it with the credit bureau to no avail. Long story short, they robbed me and I don't appreciate it. Find an honest dentist somewhere else. P.S. They're very expensive to begin with and exist to serve the Roland Park Elite. read more

I could not have asked for a better experience at this practice. As a first-year local Loyola University student, I am out for the first time on my own. Three days before I was supposed to fly home to New York City to have my four impacted wisdom teeth removed, I woke up in excruciating pain. After calling and making an emergency appointment at this practice with Dr. Merguerian, they took me quickly and she calmly explained to me what was wrong and how we could fix the problem. She took the time out of her day to remove not just the infected teeth, but all four teeth so I would not have to go through the pain a second time. I was unfortunately not a candidate for sedation, but she made the procedure very quick, easy, and pain-free with a combination of a relaxer and a few large dosages of Novocain. One hour later, I walked out of the office without the agonizing pain in my jaws that I was gone in with, and I am very grateful to Dr. Merguerian and her kind assistant who comforted me throughout the entire procedure. Both of them answered all my questions and put me completely at ease with the situation. For someone like me who had never had surgery or complex dental work done before, or alone, I could not have been more comfortable in that office with those two knowledgable, lovely and professional women. I would recommend Dr. Merguerian to anyone that I knew, and I am looking forward to thanking her in person at my follow-up appointment in one week. read more

My husband and I used to be patients at Dr. Michael Murphy & Associates. I had good experience with Dr. Alexandra Weizel and hygienist Sheri. But my husband had bad experience with Dr. Dawn Merguerian and the hygienist. They said he has periodontal disease and charged extra for periodontal maintenance , which is not different from regular dental cleaning. They signed him up for periodontal maintenance appointments every 4 month, which our Carefirst Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance only covers 2 per year. They didn't tell him that insurance won't cover the 3rd one. They always try to sell the bacterial screening every time for $25. They don't tell you which procedure will be covered by insurance or not. And you ended up with a huge bill. They try to sell add-on service to patients who don't quite understand the insurance policy. My husband and I both switched to another dental office. read more

My experience here is ok. The place is nice, they are somewhat nice etc. My main complaint is you will get nickled and dimed here - they have lots of ammenities and extra procedures that you will get charged for. They actually felt my neck and apparently checked me for a neck and throat cancer, took a swab of my cheek and looked at it under the microscope (total time of 4 seconds = +25 dollars). They try to give me an xray every time I go, even when I say repeatedly that I just want my teeth cleaned. Usually they run out of time and you get lots of stuff done to you without getting done the procedure you wanted to get done in the first place. read more

You make an appointment for one thing, and you get there, and they do other things, and then run out of time to do the one thing you came in for, and you have to come in yet again to finish what should have been a single visit task. 2. They try to scare you by showing you a blown up video image of the bacteria in your mouth. All mouths have bacteria. All surfaces of the human body have bacteria. They go on to say, "We can't actually diagnose anything from this." Then why are you showing me this? Instilling unnecessary fear in patients is malpractice. 3. They are listed as taking one kind of insurance, and when you get your bill, they say they don't really take it and can't do anything about changing how they are listed. 4. and I have to add a fourth point in agreement with someone else's comment that they seem to have difficulty with scheduling. I got four reminder calls for one appointment, all with different times. thanks. read more

The entire office is extremely kind and friendly. However, make sure you are your *own* medical advocate. The hygienists and dentists in this office champion the results of a machine called the DIAGNOdent, which is a laser that has a putative capacity to detect "hidden" decay when the machine's wand is placed on a tooth; if decay is suspected, the machine makes an alarm sound. The staff at this office exploit this sound and use scare tactics to get you to agree to unnecessary dental procedures that not only cost the patient money, but also cause unnecessary harm. Based on the DAIGNOdent (not their clinical examination), they told me I had 5 fillings that *NEEDED* to be done, which, after insurance, would cost me about $500. A few weeks later, I had returned to a trusted, experienced dentist (who is 4 hours away and not convenient for regular check-ups, except for the fact that I was in the area at the time) and he told me those teeth were fine and that the proposed procedures would be unnecessary. He also shared with me that the ADA advises against the use of the DIAGNOdent because of its high false-positive rate.
