I had a local company come out to bid on some furnace work after the company I had a service subscription with missed something big, but they gave me bad vibes, very sales-focused. Given my track record with service pros, I decided to just tackle it myself. Fast forward to last night: I woke up at 3am in a panic wondering if I'd done it all wrong and convinced we would die from carbon monoxide poisoning. This morning I called SOS Heating and Cooling, and honestly, this is the kind of service that reminds you good people still exist in this industry. Jake came out the same day. He actually listened to my concerns instead of talking over me. He walked me through everything, put my mind completely at ease, and (here's the kicker) he's the only HVAC professional I've ever met who didn't immediately try to upsell me on seven different things. Capable, honest, sympathetic, and straightforward. That's it. That's what good service looks like. SOS Heating and Cooling has earned a customer for life. I've reviewed Thompson's Comfort Connection (TCC) multiple times here over the 15+ years I've been…read moreon Yelp, and have always given them top ratings every time. And after a four-year period where everything has been running great, I had to have TCC come out again to check on my 17-year-old Amana high-efficiency furnace and the blower that brings in fresh air to the burners and exhausts combustion gases to an outside port along our front wall. That fan was running but cycling on and off, and we could smell some gas there at the exhaust exit panel outside. One quick email on Sunday, the 7th, and Austin from TCC arrived Monday morning to check out our issue. After disassembling our "inducer" motor/blower (a small fan in a gas furnace that creates a draft, pulling in fresh air for combustion and exhausting dangerous exhaust gases out through the flue) housing, Austin found the problem. After 17 years of use, the blower housing drain port was clogged (spider nest? dirt? both?) Austin cleaned it all out and flushed all the rubber drain tubes as well (which were also pretty gnarly), and that fixed it! All back together and running great...and the inducer blower now stays on and runs great. We're back in business on a solid 17-year-old Amana H.E. furnace! Five stars for prompt service response, fair pricing ($287 out the door), and a pleasant, professional, and communicative repair technician...Austin. Solidly recommend TCC, and ask for Austin if you can! Five Stars! P.S.: My neighbor across the street called me the next day and said that "...her furnace has just stopped working. Who would I recommend?" I didn't hesitate to recommend TCC...and they were there later that day. Their technician replaced their main furnace blower motor at a fair price. The old furnace went out the day before Thanksgiving one year, and they had a new one installed and running the same day. I appreciate the employees who have provided good service over the years. In the beginning I referred friends to SH, saying they are not necessarily cheap but they do good work. (Looking back, I realize however that I overpaid for the new water heater and other some other major expenses, I was just naïve and didn't do due diligence. More about overcharging below.) That being said, I've given up on SH. Too often my encounters with its employees go wrong. The person they send may or may not have experience with my issue, and they never ask for help from other employes. One recommended I have a new air intake installed (he came twice and couldn't get rid of the awful noise) and when I finally got a different guy over, he fixed the whistling noise just by recaulking the area; it was gone in minutes. Another guy made excuses for the (unsupervised) people who ripped up large patches of drywall because they didn't know to go through an interior wall; SH paid for the extra drywall repairs, which I appreciated. Another guy freaked out about the "sewage" he imagined must be under the board beneath my sink (there was none). Another couldn't tolerate me saying that I had never had a leaky condensation pipe until they replaced the AC. My 10+ years in my home meant nothing, and this is consistent: many times the repairmen will not give credence to anything I say, and however neutrally I state it, react as if I'm challenging them in some way. The latest incident is the $1800 estimate for replacing my kitchen sink (labor only). The guy said it would take 2-3 hours to remove the old sink (!!) and added that he would "cap the pipes" so I wouldn't lose water to the rest of house. I mean, there's upselling and then there's just BS. The plumber I hired removed the old sink in 20 mins and is charging a few hundred dollars for the whole job (including installing the new one). And of course the water to the house didn't have to be shut off, there are valves right under the sink. I'm really appalled they would just...lie.

When the technician arrived, he said it was clogged and had gone bad and needed to be replaced. The technician told me he checked and the warrantee expired a few months ago. He quoted $4,082 to replace it. This seemed high, and after doing my own investigation, it is STILL UNDER WARRANTEE for another year for full replacement, and even if not covered would be half their quoted amount to replace.
