Great place that has been around for a while and I hope it stays around. They have the best deals that I've found on raw hides and the food is priced cheaper than I've found elsewhere as well. They also have had (don't know if they still do) a good selection of dog coats (not the kind that makes your dog embarrassed because it looks like a person coat that's been mutated - but a coat made for working dogs who need it to fight cold weather). Great place for toys for dogs and food and treats. You can't get better prices anywhere unless you go on the internet and then you have to pay for shipping. Don't expect the employees to wait on you like other big chains, it's not going to happen. It is worth the drive. I went to the one on east warren to pick up a few pounds of some bloom. When I got home I decided to put it on the scale. It was only a half pound. I used to shop here for years for my dogs treats, i never bought food here though due to the fact that it isn't any cheaper then where i get it now, the store is quite smelly and hard to move around in....And now i can get my dogs treats at the same price anywhere else...prices seem to have shot up at K-9 and it isn't worth the yucky atmosphere in the store to go out of my way to go there...I don't know where all these people who praise the prices here usually shop at ....but food isn't cheaper here :) read more

K-9 is absolutely the best place to get pet supplies. I can get a huge bag of brand name dog food for close to $10 cheaper than I pay at big box pet stores. The prices are definitely lower than other pet stores but a lot of the other big chain stores will match their prices if you bring in the bag with the price marked. (K9 writes the prices on the product.) I do get annoyed that they often run out of the items I need for my Great Dane who is picky of course. When you try to find out when more will be in they are not very helpful although the guys that stock will at least tell you when it was supposed to come in. I called today to ask about millet sprays for my bird the woman that answered the phone was no help at all, all she said was no and then total silence on the line I asked her when they would be in. Been going to this place since they opened today was the last day I will be going here there was a bag of dog food for $47 with a yellow sticker on it that said $10 off price the cashier gave me such a hard time she said it didn't apply to that bag she didn't know how or why the sticker was on the bag. She said she didn't put the sticker on there .would i like to wait and talk to Claude but he isn't there right now really that's how you treat customers that have been coming here for 30 years? I've gone to K-9 plenty of times in the past because I have dogs with allergies and they stock specialty foods that my dogs can eat and I can't get elsewhere. But, they've made major changes in their shelving and it's hard to find some products. On top of it, I was buying canned Nutrisource Lamb and Rice for one of my dogs who has bad food allergies. That's one of the few types of food that he can digest without issues-but K-9 stopped stocking it. So, I found another type of food he can handle, Merricks Lamb and Rice in a can. But the last time couple of times I went to K-9 they had few Merricks canned products and NO Lamb and Rice. So, I'm trying Wellness Grain-Free Lamb in a can and so far, so good. But if the product availability problems continue I'll go to PETCO-I hear they carry the Merricks brands there. Another issue is they stock all Made in China/Made in Mexico rawhide chew snacks. Those give my dogs diarrhea. I buy only American made rawhide chew snacks, but K-9 doesn't stock them-the profit is much higher for China/Mexico made products. So, I don't buy rawhide chews at K-9, I get them at Target. One last thing, the help at K-9 is hit or miss. When you're looking for a product on the shelves and can't find it and you ask them to look in back they sometimes give you the runaround. The older guy with the beard and ponytail told me they had what I wanted in the back but wouldn't have it on the shelves for a couple of days. I came back 3 days later and it still wasn't stocked and some younger guy told me they didn't have any in back either. Please.....{(:^ (} read more

This petstore is a no frills shop and they are priced fairly. Amazing how much money you can save, especially compared to Petco. And they do carry very good premium brands for your pets. I think what sealed the deal for me was a 30 dollar price difference when I was buying an enzyme cleaner for the floor when we got a new puppy. There is a reason, or two or three or four - this store has been in business for decades, but in business without having to advertise. Fantastic service, quick cashiers, and yes, excellent prices. Do they have voice mail pickup after hours? No. Do they have fancy shmancy signs everywhere? No. Do they have shelves and shelves of impulse-buy items? No. You don't pay for advertising, marketing signs, perfect carts and a freshly paved parking lot. That's how I like it. Super Cheap! Our dog has a gluten allergy so we feed her solid gold dog food, usually its about $60 for a 30lb bad at pet supplies plus, and petsmart doesnt even carry it. At K-9 it is $31.99 we also feed the dogs zukes treats to help with hip problems and they are about half the price of other big name stores. This store is great, we have never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and will also order special food for you if it is out of stock or they normally don't carry it! read more

Fantastic place! I have been going to K-9 for over 20 years - I used to drive from Lake Orion, now I drive from chesterfield. They are a local business and I love that. The products, prices and people can't be beat. Claude and his employees can answer anything and always have the best interest of the pet as the primary objective. It is not fancy but I'm not looking for fancy, I'm looking for people who care about pets and know what their needs are. What I also love about K-9 is that I can get litter and food for my 5 degus (they're a type of rodent) for nearly HALF the price I'd pay at any other pet supply store, chain or local. I want to give this place a good review because they have great prices and a good selection. Unfortunately I was told to go in about doing an exchange or refund on my dog's food due to a recall and the owner was very VERY rude. I simply asked about the recall and the exchange or refund and he started yelling and cursing at me in the middle of the store. I did nothing to deserve that kind of treatment. And because he was the owner there is nothing that can be done about it. Because of the way I was treated I will never set foot in this place again.... :( read more

You can not get prices any better than K-9. I have been shopping here for all my pets since 1996. Birds, dogs, cats whatever you need the price can not be beat. Claude and his wife know their animal customers and what they want/need and give you the best deal around. Donna in the bird section is always a help with special orders or info about birds. As a person who has been going to K-9 since the 90's I cant honestly tell you that it USED to be dirty, not as one would think more dusty dirty and og pawed dirty, not dirt , dirt! ! We fostered a pup last summer and went up to K-9 Regularly, and it is not Dirty, the floors are clean, and the store is crowded as it does a brisk Business! they are much cheaper than Petsmart or Petco. who stores are white! k-9 Also has a great variety from common house animal, to hunting animal and everything in between. My only complaint is that their store isn't open longer hours! We have a new puppy of our own now and we have been going to K-9 for her bi monthly for bulk treats, dry dog food (where knowledgeable) people are not only willing to help you, but explain the differences between brands, aND I buy purina so there is also no snobbery with the staff! I am very happy with K-9 and would not shop at any other store for my puppy, I did go to the smarts, and the co's and got sticker shock on the food, couldn't get any help unless it was about how bad the brand I had was, or about how cute my dog is! Even the clothes are so outrageously priced, that I wish K-9 held a line of clothes themselves! Wait I can talk to the owner, and he will get it if he can, I dont know the man but, when I wanted a specific new food last year, he not only got it in, but I left my number and he called me when it came in!you just cant get service like that anymore!! read more

While the prices at K-9 are fair, I'm finding myself less and less inclined to shop here for my dog's food. The reason? Rude and unprofessional staff. The last time I visited, the woman at the checkout counter didn't respond at all when I said "hello" to her, and didn't say a word the entire time I was purchasing my items, she just stared blankly ahead, which somewhat unnerved me. The time previous to that, I overheard two staff members arguing loudly and rudely with each other, and when I asked where an item was located, I got a snippy "what?" and an unhelpful reply. My other issue with the place is that it's dirty, like other reviewers mentioned. I found a dead mouse between two packages of dog food once, which did not make me confident about the situations the dog food was stored in. While I don't expect a place that carries pet supplies to smell heavenly, K-9 has a faint but persistent odor akin to cat urine. But as I've mentioned, prices are good and they have a large variety of cat and dog foods, as well as a decent selection of items for birds. They could stand to carry more items for small animals, but the place is called "K-9 Specialties", after all. If they improve customer service, I'll be a loyal customer again, but for now it's quicker and easier to go to my local Pet Supplies Plus instead. read more

I've been shopping at K-9 for years. The prices are the best in town. Not only do they have canned and dry cat and dog food in many price ranges and types, but they have loose and pre packaged dog treats, huge selection of very cheap dog and cat toys, shampoos, brushes, clippers, leashes, collars. Basically, if they don't have it, you don't need it. The staff is very knowledgeable, and the owner, Claude is the most honest expert and all areas of pets, especially dogs. They also have great deals on bulk bird seed and have a large area of items for pet birds. Great refund policy. Easy access from I-696. Get off at Mound Rd., and head North. On East side of road. There's NO PLACE LIKE K9!! The only place I can find my dog's food in a 35 pound bag...for the same price the chain stores charge for a 15 pound bag!! Let me give you a clue people. This family KNOWS how to run a retail store the RIGHT way. Instead of charging high prices like so many big businesses - They sell EVERYTHING at lower prices! Which equals faster turn over! Which equals more PROFIT in the long run. Which means they are ahead of the game compared to PSP, Petsmart etc. I worked there about 10 years ago. And as you can see their business is going strong to this day. K-9 Specialties is one store you will never see go under like so many other family owned businesses. I had customers come in from ALL OVER MICHIGAN, CANADA and OUT OF STATE. Sure...it could be cleaner and a bit brighter. But when you move as much merchandise as fast as they do then the small stuff gets pushed to the side. The whole store could get major scrub down. But it would get just as crowded and chaotic within a month. Their prices are the best around far and wide. I know! I've moved alot and not another store can beat them on PRICES OR SELECTION for any pet you may have. Please be aware if you shop here you are only shopping here to get the absolute lowest prices available. That's it. This is an old-school Mom & Pop business that runs the same way it has for decades. There is absolutely nothing modern about this place or the way it runs. They only accept old-fashioned paper manufacturer coupons because they have no way of scanning other types for legitimacy and unfortunately many before have simply printed off multiple copies of the same barcoded coupon that is not honored by the distributor/manufacturer. They get deliveries ever Thursday afternoon, so if your product is in high demand, plan to be there Thursday evening/Friday morning or you will likely find your item out of stock until the following week. Many people, including myself, buy cases at a time due to the very low prices and frequent shortage of inventory. I save hundreds of dollars a year on food for my two dogs. I have shopped at K9 for years. During the years I have seen that they advertise a sale price, although when you get to the register the price for the item is not any lower. They say that the price tag on the product is already reduced. Today I proved that they are illegally advertising sale prices. I have been purchasing the same brand dog food for years, it has always been $49.99. When I went in today to purchase the same bag, I noticed it was priced $48.99 and also had a sticker that stated "Sale $5.00 off". I went to the register and the price rang up $48.99 + tax, only $1.00 off not the $5.00 sale it was tagged. I spoke to the owner and asked if the price had increased, he stated that it had not. he said that they sell the product for $53.99. I called him out since I had purchased the product month over month for years. I left frustrated, went home and took a picture of the new bag priced $48.99 (with the $5.00 off) next to the old bag priced $49.99 (regular price). went back up and showed him the picture, along with statement showing I have paid $49.99 every month for the last year. Buyer beware...Terrible place... I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND...Items clearly not marked, seems like the items they carry have been there for years. I bought dog food that had a $3.00 off sticker on bag, price on shelf where dog food was said $36.99, I expected to pay 33.99 + tax, no price on bag at all, went to pay and they told me 36.99 price with $3.00 off. Let it go, went there again, price on shelf where dog food was $36.99, no price or sticker for $3.00 off on bag this time, expected to pay $36.99 + tax, get to counter to pay lady calls out for price, told her it was $36.99, she even agreed, they yell back $37.99. Then they argue they had to raise price, Yeah, in the 5 mins I was in the store... TOTAL lack of respect for customer and poor customer service. I believe there are LAWS in Michigan to prevent stores from taking advantage of people this way. K-9 used to be something special. Sure it was rough, but the prices and selection outweighed the negatives. Now? It is not worth it. The phone will NEVER be answered. Ever. It is dirty, tight aisles, the WORST shopping carts imaginable. Had been a customer for decades and never greeted or asked if I needed help. Experienced many a marital spat as Claude and Elizabeth (the married to each other owners) yelled at each other. Their inventory system is a dry erase board (no, really, it is) of items they have run out of. We call it the "Out of it" store. They will say they will order something, but it will NEVER happen. If I lived within a couple of miles, I might take my chances on equipment, but I would have to pass on the bagged food for fear of creepie crawlies. Knowledgeable staff??
