K-9 is one place I miss after having moved away from the area. They have such a wide selection of products, and at prices that really just can't be beat. Best place to go for pet supplies. Especially if you're looking for a hard to find, specific type dog grooming t/product that you might have seen at a groomers or Dog Show chances are you might find it here! Great prices on foods from regular brands found at all stores to higher end like Fromm, Candidae etc. If you can't find it just ask and they'll either find it or help you get it or something similar/better. I've been going here for MANY years and NEVER disappointed. Does get super busy and insanely crowded on weekends etc but worth the values hands down. It's an older warehouse type shopping style sob"ambiance " isn't there but great values and quality goods are. Plenty of great parking too. You can't go wrong with this pet store! K-9 beats everyone's price by far. And the best thing about them, you can return anything, and I mean anything, only if you keep your receipt, and even if it's open! True story: my dog Flash is a Basset hound mix, and he is allergic to everything, and he's a picky boy. So sometimes half-way into a 20lb bag of food, he'll just get sick of it and refuse to eat it, or he'll start to get an ear infection, which tells me he's allergic. I can take the 1/2 eaten bag back, and get new food! Seriously. The owner, and resident Guru on everything Pet related, his name is Clyde, and if you have an issue with your pet, Clyde most definitely will have an answer for you. The decor is bare bones, and it not fancy by any means, but what it lacks in 'pretty' it makes up in selection and price. They sell all the brands you can think of and some of the less popular "high-end brands" including Wysong, Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken, etc. They also wholesale to other pet supply companies. They move a lot of food so it always FRESH. Occasionally they're out of something, but never for long. They have crates, bowls, show leads, Herm Springer chain collars, made in the USA leather leads, beds, welping boxes, grooming supplies, etc. They also have a gigantic selection of "bulk" treats. The owner seems to always be stocking the shelves and he knows every dog product we've ever talked to him about. His pricing is astoundingly low. read more

If your buying a 38lb bag of dog food, you'll have a war trying to push that damn thing through their narrow isles without bumping into other customers or their pets. We have a puppy coming and needed to restock on some essentials; dog bowls, shampoo, nail clippers, etc. While I have a pet store near my house that I absolutely adore, for generic basics, the drive to Warren is 100% worth it. They have a decent selection of food and treats though I don't buy here because they don't carry my brand. K-9 isn't fancy but saving money doesn't need to be. I like this store because of the decent pricing but I've noticed that in the past 3 or 4 months when I go my food is priced very differently. I get various merrick gf but mostly do the Buffalo, the Texas beef and the puppy recipe. So one month ago it was 33.99 that was the sale price, $5 off regular. Which would make it 38.99 but I paid 36.99 previous to that "sale" And I went last week and it was 44.99? All bags are the same price which is weird. You'd think puppy recipe would be less than the Buffalo which it is in other places and it previously has been here!! Their pricing is wacky and it's irritating me now. The food is still cheaper here than other stores but I've found that I can take my old bag with lable to pet stores that price match and I can get that discount on top of that with whatever the pet store is running or coupons. read more

I rolled my grapes over the price tag and just about fainted! $29.98 for the SAME brand and size bag that I get for $11.99 at K9!? I turned on my heel and high-tailed it to K9 before they closed. Since I do not have one of my dogs with me I have to have some fun. I have kept that invisible dog leash that I got from the theme park. The last time I went here I walked into the K9. I was standing at the end of the aisle where where no one could see my "dog". Then I grabbed the end of the shelf and started yelling, "help me I can't control my dog, he's out of control". Well I started to squirm around and pulled and pulled. Then when one of the workers walked over to help me(or throw me out) she had the look of panic like she didn't want to get involved with my dog. She laughed so hard I thought I was going to need a doggy bag clean up. I picked up a bunch of rawhide bones and went up to the counter to pay. As I was waiting I opened up the bag and handed one down to my invisible friend. True story.... The next time I went in they just cracked up because they were waiting for me to "pull" something else. I have to add my voice to the chorus here. There is no better value in pet supplies that I have yet to find. They have an excellent bird supply selection. Normally, bird cages can be a costly item but K-9's prices are easy to swallow. The service is accommodating and friendly as well. I've had them special order a particular bird cup for me without any hassle. Previously, I usually went to Pet Supplies Plus in Royal Oak, but now I will always go the extra miles to this store. The last time I had to pick up my two 25 lb. bags of Kaytee Supreme cockatiel feed @ PSP the price had a significant jump from before. When I asked the checkout girl what was up, she said that the former manager recently passed away and didn't keep the pricing up to date and they had to make the necessary adjustments. I bit the bullet and made the purchase against my better judgment. Later at home, I called K-9 and asked them their price. Get this, it was nearly HALF! When I mention the price difference to the man on the other end, he just laughed and said something about them being the thorn in PSP's side. This prompted me to call PSP and bring up this little fact with the manager. The funny thing was, I didn't even have to mention the competitor by name, just the price point, for the lady to know exactly who I was talking about. She tried to explain why they had to price the way that they did and how they had no idea how K-9 managed to keep the prices so low. She seemed to be implying that K-9 was exercising some nefarious business scheme--whatever! Still, I knew then that I had no option but to follow my wallet on this one. read more

I was so happy to find out about this place because they carry Wysong which is a organic brand of dog food and the only food my dog will eat. I used to buy it from a Pet Supplies Plus until they closed the location near my house. I was trying to find other pet stores that carried the same brand with no luck. I searched online for pet stores and started calling around and K 9 had it! And they are located in Warren! (13 mile and Mound) Anyhow they carry a few varieties and It's about $7.99 for a bag. I was asking actual customers for help finding things then once I did find someone who worked there he argued with me about what I needed. I said I wanted an EasyWalk for my husky and he argued with me saying I needed a spiked choke collar for him. Wouldn't show me where the easy walks were until 5 minutes after arguing. Interesting, for sure. Amazingly low prices on pet food. And they have a huge selection of treats, too! They also carry pet crates, beds, pillows, etc. It's not a huge store, but they sure do cram in a wide variety of inventory. It's very much like a warehouse, so don't expect a luxurious interior. But well worth it, for big time savings. I'd have given it five stars if someone, anyone, would've offered to help me with my 100-lb (literally) cart full. :) read more

If you go here looking for some posh, upscale pet store, you will no doubt be horrified when you walk in. If you go here looking for high quality products at ridiculously affordable prices, you will be overjoyed. I've been shopping at K9 for nearly a decade and their prices cannot be beat. My dog is on a grain free diet and when shopping at other stores (Petsmart, Petco, etc) I had a serious case of sticker shock when I saw the grain free foods that were offered. K9 not only has so many more options, but a 30 pound bag of Taste of the Wild runs $36.99 (elsewhere it runs easily $45-$50). But perhaps one of the biggest draws is the toy department, an extra large Kong (those big black ones that even the toughest chewers shouldn't be able to get through) might set you back $10, where it would be double at the chain stores. You might have a bit of a wait if you go on a Saturday and their hours aren't super convenient (I think they close at 5 or 6), it's not the cleanest store, the carts are old, the aisles can get cluttered and congested, but you'll deal when you see the savings. Yep - this is THE place to go for pet supplies. I drive from Royal Oak to visit, just for the great prices. The staff is always so friendly, and they're always talking to my dog, petting her, and treating her like royalty. If you're a pet owner, you'll be in good company here. The challenge, though, is the small space. Because these folks basically knock it outta the park with prices and service, everyone wants to go here. The aisles are really narrow, so navigating the store with a large cart (and maybe your dog) can be extremely frustrating. Additionally, if you use a credit card, only one cashier can use the system at a time. So even though 3 or 4 lines may be going at once, only one card can be swiped at a time. So they'll yell "CHARGING" while everyone else waits. Meh. ...but it's worth it. Pack your patience and some cash and stock up on really great priced pet supplies. read more

As pretty much everyone else has stated, the store is dirty and crowded, the carts are old, and the parking lot is not in great shape (unless you count Mound Road, which can also be a parking lot at times). However, their prices are fantastic!! We purchase bedding and food for our rats and hamsters, and everything is pretty much half of the chain pet stores' prices and WELL worth making the longer trip for. Also, I had a VERY good customer service experience there. Our rats' wire cage had a plastic tray that the little stinkers had chewed through enough of the sides of, that they could squeeze out. The rest of the cage was still in great shape and buying a new one seemed wasteful and expensive. I couldn't figure out the manufacturer or find something of comparable size online, so I brought the cage to K-9. They were unable to help me locate a suitable replacement either, but they did spend at least an hour looking high and low all over the store, bringing me different trays to try, looking through catalogs and such. I give them props for giving it a good effort, when they were obviously busy and had plenty of other things they could have been doing. (Ultimately, they ended up recommending a metal shop to create one for me, which worked out well.) read more

They have a huge selection of ANYTHING a pet owner could need. If you're coming from a distance, calling might be a decent idea... or pick up more than one of whatever you need. I go to this store because my dog food is $12 per bag cheaper than Petco. But I hate that the phones are rarely answered they just ring. And this week I called ahead (got through on the 2nd call) and had them place 3 bags of food on hold because the last 2 times I drove the 40 miles there they were out of my food. So I wised up and had it on hold this time, except when I got there the guy never put it on hold! Thankfully they had some on the shelves. If you want a store with bright lights, shiny floors and happy, helpful staff-do not come here. K-9 looks like an old warehouse inside, it's a little dark and a little dingy. But who cares? The first time I shopped there, I started chatting with a woman who drove an HOUR EACH WAY to get to this store. It's worth it! Love taking the dog here. It was near my house and I was able to walk the dog to the store. The place is very pet-friendly and they even give some treats to the visiting animals. K-9 Specialties is set up kind of like a warehouse, which lots of merchandise on industrial shelves. They have everything you could want...food, treats, accessories, supplies, and more. Even though it is geared towards dogs, they carry supplies for almost all pets, excluding aquarium life. If you have a dog, go and check this place out. I feed my dog an all raw diet and have for a few years now so I don't go to pet stores any longer. When I did, I actually had a family owned store tell me that this place sells dog food to the public for a cheaper price than that store even bought it from the distributor for ( Canadae and taste of the Wild). The staff is the shittiest and rudest on the planet hands down with a couple exceptions. The store is more of a warehouse but the prices are insanely cheap!
