A medley! Okra, lamb (so tender!), tandoori chicken was incredible!

WOW! What incredible flavorful food! I'm used to Indian food being oily and salty, but instead it was perfectly spiced and so light and not heavy. Wonderful! Best tandoori chicken I've ever had! Plus the owner was very nice. I can't wait to eat here again. Don't miss the desserts! So delicious and not too sweet.

Went here today with my family we ordered paneer tikka masala, methi mattar masala, malai kofta along with cilantro naan, garlic naan and plain naan and biryani. Food was very fresh taste and biryani was very delicious, and flavorful. Also ordered special mango lassi that was a touch of rum and food was amazing very flavorful with perfect spices. The menu has so many options non-veg and veg and indo chinese option. The staff is very nice and its A very lovely place, will be coming back here! Thank you !

My family and I have been eating here for years - it's one of our classic go-to spots. This restaurant is perfect for vegetarians, family dinners and take-out. The portion sizes are good, food is delicious (we usually get medium spice which is always consistent) and the service is decent. I would recommend getting a lacha parantha cooked tandoori style - it's flaky, filling and ideal for most of the veggie entrees. The eggplant dish sometimes is a bit too oily but taste wise it's great. Ask for a complimentary plate a onions and lemons on the side - squeeze just a little lemon ontop your vegetables and take a few bites of raw onion along w/ your meal -- it will accentuate the taste. (the super stinky breath afterward is worth it!). Their malai kulfi dessert is nice - or at least my family enjoys it. They have a catering hall next to the restaurant. So don't be surprised if you visit the restaurant on a Saturday night there might be some loud indian music going on (sound proofin isn't the best). Additionally, if you go there for a big group dinner, make a reservation and ask for the space in the back of restaurant - it offers a short wall so your group can get some privacy. If you bring a cake or dessert from outside the staff is accommodating in brining extra plates, napkins, etc.

    Great location! Menu is great!

This chic, dimly lit, BYOB spot is perfect for a nice dinner with family or friends--or a date night. We even got to meet the owner, Rahul, who personally checked in on every table to make sure everyone was having a great experience. Such a welcoming touch. I dined here over the holidays and absolutely loved both the food and the overall experience. Some standout dishes for me were the goat dum biryani, chicken tikka masala, hakka noodles, and navratan korma. You honestly can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but these were definite favorites. Anytime I'm passing through this area, I'll be stopping by again. Seriously delicious Indian food.

Recently, we visited their sister restaurant Paheli after trying Praana earlier, where Uma (our…read moreserver) had recommended this place--it had been on our wish list ever since. It was Bengali and Maithili new year and just like we follow the tradition back in India (means eating outside), we decided to come here with our little family. The restaurant is bigger than Praana and feels more like a fine dining place. The ambience looks nice with an Indian theme. Since it was a weekday, it was not very crowded, which was good. And surprisingly, Uma was our server again--she even recognized us What we ordered: *Lamb Pepper Fry (4.5/5): Usually this dish is served dry in most places, but here it came with a little gravy. immediately I ordered garlic naan with it, and it tasted really good together. Even though I prefer it dry, this was the best dish we had. *Tawa Fish Fry (3.5/5): It was basically fried tilapia. Tasted okay, nothing special. * Chef's Special Masala Roast (Lamb): Many people seem to like this dish, but for me it was just average. The presentation was nice. It comes with a small portion of masala rice, which was actually tasty--I just wish there was more of it. Overall, the lamb gravy felt quite normal and not something special. While eating, I told Uma that in Praana there was at least one dish that really stood out, but here I didn't feel that. I would probably go back to Praana again, especially for the Meen Pollichath (Pompano fish), which I really liked. Overall 3.5/5

Being a…read morefirst-timer here, I ordered my usual litmus test dishes of chicken tikka masala and saag paneer (the classics), along with goat kolhapuri, butter chicken, and accompaniments of garlic naan and mango lassi. The chicken lollipop appetizer arrived looking the part - hot, crispy, and slightly zesty - but unfortunately didn't deliver on its visual promise. The dough was too thick and the meat rather rubbery, so the execution wasn't up to par. The mains, however, were redeeming. The gravy in the chicken tikka masala was delectable, and we enjoyed this as well as the kholapuri (which we asked for "extra spicy" but was just medium spicy to me - I'm sure others would disagree lol). My child loved his butter chicken. Both dishes featured substantial chunks of chicken. The saag paneer deserves to be mentioned for having a rough-chopped texture that I prefer, looking like actual spinach and not the zealously over-puréed green smoothie so many Indian restaurants inexplicably trot out. A touch over-salted, but otherwise tasty, and with an abundance of paneer. The lassi and garlic naan were both great. Portions are generous, and it's BYOB. Should you forget to bring something inebriating, a liquor shop is conveniently located just a couple of doors down. Owner/manager Austin is so welcoming and personable, earning this place extra hospitality points. I appreciate a business operator who is attentive to customers and shows genuine interest and concern. It makes a difference.

5/5 Stars - Jalwa in Montclair Is the Real Deal. And Then There's Nayan…read more There are restaurants you enjoy, and then there are restaurants that rearrange something in your brain. Jalwa in Montclair is the second kind. The space sets the tone immediately -- upscale but unpretentious, modern without being cold, the kind of room that makes you settle in and order one more thing. The menu is a love letter to Indian cuisine with a contemporary sensibility: bold, aromatic, deeply flavorful, and -- remarkably -- one of the most vegan-friendly dining experiences I've ever had anywhere. Not vegan-tolerant. Vegan-excellent. Modifications are handled with genuine expertise, and the results are full, satisfying, and never feel like a consolation prize. We started with crispy vegetable samosas packed with spiced potato and peas, and a couple of other appetizers that hit like a warm, fragrant wave. The dal was rich and creamy with flavor that built beautifully with every bite -- the kind of dish you find yourself thinking about days later. The vegetable biryani was fragrant and perfectly spiced. The curries, customized fully vegan, were outstanding. The garlic naan was soft, pillowy, and genuinely addictive. Every plate was generous, nothing was heavy or oily, and spice levels were adjusted exactly as requested. It was Indian cuisine firing on all cylinders. But I have to talk about Nayan. I have to. In twenty-something years of dining out, I have never -- not once -- encountered a server who so completely elevated a meal through sheer force of warmth, knowledge, and genuine care. From the moment Nayan greeted our table, it was clear we were in exceptional hands. He walked us through the vegan options with the fluency of someone who actually loves this food. His pairing suggestions were perfect -- every single one. He checked in at exactly the right moments, never hovering, always there. His energy was magnetic without being performative. He made us try dishes we would have skipped and we were grateful every time. This is not hyperbole: Nayan is one of the best front-of-house professionals I have ever encountered. He doesn't just serve a table -- he orchestrates an experience. Jalwa is lucky to have him, and whoever is in charge of promotions there should act fast, because someone with his talent, instinct, and people skills has a very bright future ahead -- in this industry or any other. If I could leave six stars, the sixth one would be just for him. Book a table at Jalwa. Ask for Nayan. Thank me later.

The highlight was the saffron butter crab - that umami flavor was insane. The honey lotus was crispy and packed with flavor. The Goan fish curry was satisfying and not spicy at all which we both appreciated. I also enjoyed the 3 complimentary sauces on the table - none of them were too spicy. I highly recommend this place!
