NOT the Review I would like to have left, but these are the Facts...
I recently checked out Several Auto Repair Shops in the area of S. Scottsdale, I found this to be quite a Trying experience, as having been an ASE Certified Master Auto Tech since 1977, I've Always done my Own repairs and trust Few others, however, Time takes it's toll, and Now over 70, and without a shop, I'm No Longer 'up to' doing Heavy Line Repairs, so I needed to find a Good Technician. I Google searched, read Reviews, and Then went to Visit, In Person, each of the shops I thought Might be suitable... Then it was time to get Estimates for the repairs I wanted... HIGH (Dealer) LOW (grunge shop) and in between, with most of them Close.
Sadly, my First experience Wasn't so good... I was impatient, and apparently I Chose Wrong.
Because scheduling/ timing was right, I chose JW Auto Care, where I took Mom's Highlander to have an axle replaced. Shortly after Jim called me to pick up my vehicle, he called back to tell me the car wouldn't start, that they'd have to check it out in the morning. I went there right away anyway, and sure enough, it wouldn't start, some trouble with the shifter... and I could tell someone had removed a trim bezel to inspect it, because there was a foam insulator exposed that wasn't before. I was told Good News, I can give you a ride home! NO, I Require a Vehicle...one of your Loaner cars. (Mom is near 92, and ready transportation is a Must). I went Back there First Thing the next day to find they found the problem to be a bad shifter Cable Bushing, for which Jim (with Patrick's help) estimated the charge to repair would be another $200 (hour minimum) on top of the $500 I'd already committed to paying for having an axle replaced, (Not a problem, the car needed the axle, I Wanted the axle replaced and repair price was in line with other shops). Needless to say, I took my vehicle home and replaced the shifter cable bushing myself. Granted, things break All the time, (moreso with rough handling), (how long could it have lasted with just 2 seniors driving?), this just happened to happen on Their watch, (I Might have paid Half, had that been offered as an option). The Worst part is that I was Lied to about them Not Knowing What the problem was, Jim's 'story' changed a couple of times from when he called me to when I took my vehicle home... another reason I Won't go back... vehicle was driven off property by Non-tech to Car Wash, (which I did Not authorize). Test Driving by a Tech, is Totally understandable, expected, and acceptable.
Before you think I might be too 'picky'... Consider this: Estimates, (by them), for Future repairs were $6600... Most of which I was agreeable to, and were recommendations I would have made, save the unnecessary diagnostics charges, because Ray Charles could tell where the oil leak is coming from, and so could I, so no need for "Clean engine, put dye in the oil and return for further inspection (for $130)" Just to find that indeed the Cam Covers are leaking and require replaced, and at near 100,000 miles, a Tune-Up, (Spark Plugs and Fuel Injector Service) is Also recommended in the Near future, (and ought to be done at same time as Cover Seals). Patrick was the Tech who worked on my vehicle, I didn't have much chance to speak with him, but he seemed to be a seasoned and knowledgeable tech, I believe he did His part ok, but the rest? Not so much... Jonny, the owner didn't have much to say when I picked up the car, what could he say? He was noticeably embarrassed by his people. He Did give me a nice Box 'o Mints though.(eyeroll) We received a $25 discount for First-time customers And with my paid bill, a $10 Coupon for Future Repairs, which I Highly Doubt I'll require. It's Amazing How Much a $10 bushing can end up costing, isn't it? To their credit, I Will also add that Ryan, Service Mgr, who misquoted the price of repairs Stuck to his Word, and Did Not change his estimate of charges... That's integrity, Thank You Ryan. Also to their credit, No One tried to Sell me on Replacing the cable, which some might do...($350 + Labor for that Highlander). Be Careful Out There read more
