When I lived in the area, the employees would ask about how me and my family were doing lately. The owner, Brenda, is a really nice person. My dad worked for her for a while. They also have quite a lot of variety in the grocery section for being so small. If I didn't have the time or gas money to get to a bigger store, this place usually had everything I ever needed. At a higher price, usually, but I love to support my local businesses. The coffee they sell here is pretty good, I don't know how they do it but it's about the best gas station coffee I've ever had. It's also way more affordable than getting coffee at Starbucks so that's nice. If I still lived around the area I'd still be doing most of my shopping at Brenda's.

Not to be outdone by the multi-talented Buzz and Blooms just half a block over, is Brenda's. It's…read moreactually owned by a woman named Brenda. In fact, 99% of the business in Onalaska are known to the locals by the first name of the owners. I had a really hard time classifying this business here in yelp. To the outside world (ie civilization) it just looks like the town gas station. And, for the drive-through Onalaska crowd on their way to more exciting destinations...that's what it is. Brenda's is far more than just a gas station with a mini mart. It is a full service mini grocery store, long term storage rental, the only full service post office in town, the only available ATM in town, and also does full service catering, and peruse the community bulletin board, among other things. You would be hard pressed to ever go to Brenda's and not find what you're looking for, find the parking lot fairly full, guys hanging out on the benches out front chatting it up, and all the employees know the residents by first name. Every time I have stopped by here while visiting, we've been unable to leave in under 20 minutes..because every aisle you turn you run into someone else you know and stop and say hi and catch up on life. If you're a local here, you can even run a tab on your grocery and gas purchases. For those of us just driving through...Brenda's prices on groceries are on par w/ the nearest other stores back 30 some odd miles back near Chehalis and the gas prices are only a few cents higher than back "in town".

My family and I had one of the most absurd and frustrating grocery store experiences I've ever seen…read moreat Blanton's Grocery Store. My aunt (44) and uncle were using the self-checkout and bought a case of beer. Instead of simply checking the ID of the person purchasing the alcohol, the employee demanded to see the ID of everyone standing anywhere nearby. My aunt, who is clearly well over 21, was forced to show ID even though she wasn't the one paying. Then my sister (24) and her boyfriend (32) were also told they had to show ID just for standing nearby. They actually had to walk all the way back outside to their vehicle just to grab their IDs to satisfy this ridiculous demand. The part that really pushed things over the edge is that my sister's boyfriend is a U.S. veteran who was injured while serving our country. It's incredibly ironic that someone can be 18 years old and old enough to enlist, risk their life, and serve the United States, but this same person gets treated like a criminal and harassed in a grocery store just to prove they're over 21 while standing next to family members buying groceries. And somehow the situation still got more ridiculous. I was standing by the doorway waiting for my family and I was also asked for ID, despite not even being part of the transaction. Every single person involved was clearly and obviously over 21. This didn't feel like someone responsibly following policy. It felt like a teller on a complete power trip who decided to make things difficult for absolutely no reason. I've worked in customer service and hospitality for over 8 years, including time in a grocery store, so I understand alcohol laws and regulations. Verifying the purchaser's age is standard practice. But demanding ID from every adult in the general vicinity, even someone standing by the door, is beyond excessive and completely unnecessary. The irony is we walked across the street to the gas station afterward and had zero issues. Blanton's managed to turn a simple grocery stop into an unnecessarily hostile experience. If this is how management chooses to treat customers, don't be surprised when people take their business elsewhere.

It isn't much to look at, and it's not the cleanest market, but I got food. I got snacks. That was a big deal!!! Definitely like knowing it's there for my next trip to Rainier!!!
