My friend has a cabin on Lost Lake, and I came up here with her and her daughter for a long weekend. I am a die-hard knitter, and I love visiting local yarn shops when I travel. She kept telling me about the great yarn shop she likes to go to in Saint Germain, and I was excited to finally get to not only visit her cabin, but also Just Yarnin'.
It did not disappoint! It's small, but it's packed with wonderful yarns organized by weight, sock/fingering at the front to DK along the window to worsted and bulky at the back. Near the front door, they have a rack of yarns that includes hand-dyed yarns by Lost Lake Yarns, a local dyer, and I made sure to get some, as I love to get local yarns as souvenirs of my trips!
We walked in and were greeted warmly by one of the owners, and she chatted with my friend after letting me know how the store was set up. There were some local knitters sitting at the table towards the back, and I wandered around admiring and feeling all the yarns - I'm a sucker for Malabrigo and anything alpaca. There are so many great store samples to help you imagine how various yarns work up, and I fell in love with the Owl Moon shawl, and got 2 skeins of Knitted Wit fingering and a skein of the Lost Lake yarn to knit it.
We were short on time when we went in because my friend's daughter kept texting us, so we left with our initial purchases. The next day at the lake, it was gray, cold and rainy, so we decided to go back to Saint Germain and popped in here again (my bank account is a glutton for punishment)! The store was empty so we had the full attention of the owner this time. She showed us more yarn and talked about the samples. I ended up with 3 more skeins of Malabrigo, a mini kit for a great hat designed by an 11 year old, and an Anemone Shawl kit (!!!). I've gotten really into shawl knitting recently, and distinctly remember a time when I thought knitting so many shawls was silly. I guess I'm silly now! But Nancy (one of the owners) said that some people say you can never have too many shawls, so I'll go with that. I might even end up needing a shawl vault, like Stevie Nicks.
I have a local yarn store back home in Chicago, but I'm going to think of Just Yarnin' as my LYS away from home from now on, because my friend said I'm invited back to her cabin, so yay! read more
