As with everything else in my life, I waited until the "last minute" to get my passport renewed. I figured with my trip a little less than a month away it wouldn't be a problem receiving it on time if I paid to have it expedited. Well, the very helpful lady at the courthouse was worried for me because apparently, after they (court) processes the paperwork it then goes to the post office where "it sits for who knows how long" before they send it onto Houston. On top of that, my passport was over 15 years old and it was now considered a first-time application rather than a renewal so I had to get a copy of my birth certificate to start the application process. Thoroughly paranoid now, I asked the lady at the courthouse what my options were, she gave me a flier to Just Passports and said they could expedite the process even faster than through the normal channels. I paid my fees, had my picture taken and in EXACTLY one week later I had my passport in my hand. Whew!!! Now, it is a little pricey (ended up paying about $300 total for the ENTIRE process: court fees, expedited fee for the state, Just Passports fee and the fee to obtain a copy of my birth certificate), but that is what happens when you procrastinate!!! My wife and I will be traveling to China next week. It was a last minute decision to make the trip as this year will be our 25th Anniversary. We needed visas for China and after a little research thought we would drive down to Houston to get the visas ourselves. We thought the time was too short to deal with an agent. The day before we headed down to Houston from Austin I decided to speak to a local agent in Austin just to see if it might still be possible to use an agent as the 3 hour drive each way and our planned overnight stay in Houston was going to cost us about $500 with the cost of the visas. Just Passports is a superlative business run by a gentleman who is a true professional. I knew nothing about the process and needed a passport soon (too much procrastination on my part). I was greeted very warmly and had all my worrying questions answered with a "yes sir", or a "no sir." Little gesture like that reassured me that while it does cost a pretty penny to expedite a passport through the state department, it would be an endeavor entirely worth the cost. I did the 8-15 days option and received it in 10 days. The expedited service through the state department takes 2-3 weeks, but I enjoy walking into a physical location and having Just Passports do all the work for me. The entire concept of being in a hurry, but having to correspond with the government through the mail feels far less reliable than id like it to be. Wow, what a GREAT experience! Erik was there EVERY step of the way. I was late in filing for a visa to China. He sat me down at a laptop to fill in a form, to get a hotel reservation, while he filled out the actual visa app -- so I'm typing away, he's asking me questions for the form he's working on, etc. He stays late, shows me the finished application, and explains how the courier system works to the Chinese Embassy in Houston, reassuring me that it will come back in exactly 4 working days. Wow, Erik is Awesome! We were really worried about getting our passports in time for our upcoming family vacation. I hadn't realized my passport was expired, and we forgot that our 8yr old daughter hadn't yet traveled abroad with us, so we were really under the gun.
