So it took me a couple days to gather my thoughts and put hand to phone (instead of pen to pad) in order to really give a full account of my experience at this "Loctician". I have no idea how good she is at actually doing hair b/c I didn't allow her to continue her onslaught of my character, it all began as soon as I waltzed in her door she didn't get the chance to have her hands blessed to touch my hair. 1st off I rang the bell upon arrival and was confused as to why it took so long for someone to respond, a cat (was confused as well) noticed me going to the door and tried to come in with me and waited for entry w/me. I got no response so I wz getting ready to leave then I'm assuming this was the owner opens and looks at me as though Im ringing the wrong bell & the 1st thing she says to a NEW CLIENT is "did you ring the bell?" With a puzzled look I said of course I did and she says adamantly, "NO YOU DIDN'T". Me as an owner I knew that response was a red flag and.a sign of things to come but I'm pretty patient so I accepted the 1st faux pas as maybe I read the room wrong. As I enter the basement of this brownstone I notice a humongous dog (possible mix pit/boxer) in the kitchen. Im a dog lover and the idea that she runs a business in her house and doesn't even ask her client if they have any issues with dogs was her 2nd faux pas, While sitting down waiting for my 3pm I walked in a quarter to (she was finishing up on someone), the dog comes and sits right in front of me and like I said no problem with dogs but I could have been someone else she never said anything to me, she approaches the dog and tells the dog to sit and not say anything mind you he didn't say or do anything he was just being a dog. Ladies and gentlemen the dog obeyed his master and complied w/o a peep and I was immediately impressed (by the way the only thing that impressed me). My phone goes off and I forgot my headphones in my car so it was kinda loud and she immediately YELLS AT ME AS THOUGH IM A CHILD. she says YOU MUST TURN THAT OFF! I said excuse me, she says we don't do that here...... Remember there's a killer dog in front of me and I could've easily taken her down for screaming at me as if I was some 10 year old with snot running down my nose type of kid but I just said no thx and walked out wasn't feeling the overall synergy in the atmosphere. Btw All of this took less than 15 min, my after action review on this matter from what I gathered is: (A) she knows how to talk to animals (B) lacks the mental fortitude/decency to talk to a human being especially a (1st time client) (C) you never get a second chance to make a 1st impression Ended up walking around the corner on Fulton & found a nice friendly African spot that end up doing my locs & had no issues *You don't deserve any stars btw *I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU AVOID THIS PLACE like a Plague read more

She will physically move you Talk to you like you're a child Rant to herself while doing your hair Insist she knows everything And her products smell amazing but leave an unfinished look on the hair. Spoke to the owner on the phone for about less than 5 minutes and needless to say she was very rude. I was calling to find out a price range of past clients who have done loc extentions. She told me she could not tell me a price range because I needed to come into the salon. I told her I understood so but still needed to know an average price range. After she gave me a verbal abrasive run around, she told me the "girl" who does it its not avaliable and she has to book this "girl". After explaining my time is limited and I will be traveling far to get to the salon and simply wanted a price range or estimate (this is after telling her my hair length and that I already had locs), she could not produce the estimate. The topping on this rude "business" owner conversation was when I asked her name. She nastily responded "what does it matter to you, I am the owner". I whole heartedly love supporting black owned business but someone like herself puts a bad name on black owned businesses. I do not recommend patronizing this salon. Went to get a retwist and advised Marceline that I would be at least 15 minutes late due to train. Once I got there, I didn't close the door shut, to which she made me aware of. Once I got into her chair she started making remarks that I didn't like; however, I "played" her game until she raised her voice and started to address me from across the room. I felt by her doing so was unprofessional and advised her of such. When it came time to style my hair into a Mohawk, she gave me anything but one, even though I went online to a website that shown various Mohawk styles. Once she completed my hair, I excused myself to go to the restroom and she started talking about me to another client she was serving. When I was leaving, she came up to me and said "Why did you have to go there when I was talking to you across the room and not raising my voice"??? In short go somewhere else to get your locs done at a salon rather at someone's house!!! read more

I've worn my hair loc'd for the past 20 years and would only get it done professionally if I had a special occasion to attend. The ones at the nape of my neck started breaking off, so I realized that it was time for help. I found Marcelline on line under "Loc Maintenance". She expertly fixed my mangled loc's and patiently waited as I searched through my head looking for other offenders. I hadn't realized that my hair was too dry, and that my loc's were breaking because of it. She gave me a much needed hot oil treatment. The fragrant oil she uses is lovely and really penetrates the hair. Weeks later it still smells sweet. I don't recommend this place to ANYONE! First and foremost this is the worst experience I've ever encountered with a hairstylist in my life! For starters my first visit was fine no problems at all, she portrayed herself to be LGBTQ friendly and her hospitality was superb. It was a good first impression so I decided to schedule another appointment. When I called to make a second appointment I used my nickname ("Nay" a nickname that's commonly used in the black community) instead of my government name. She then questioned me over the phone and asked if I wrote a bad review about her on google because there was someone else with the same nickname :/ . I had no idea what she was talking about and If I did make a bad review about her I wouldn't have scheduled for a second appointment :/. Also, it was unprofessional for her to question me about a google review to begin with! Long story short I told her it wasn't me and she insisted that it was (psycho). During my appointment she kept asking me to sit up, fix my head, or make gestures to my posture. There was times when she would adjust my head or my body herself (red flag) yet I complied and remained patient. Everything I did bothered her, I was on my phone watching a video and I realized the volume was loud so I turned it down so only I can hear it, then she looks at me and asked me if I had "ear pieces" you mean headphones lady? Lol. Her old school music was playing and she claimed she couldn't hear it because of my phone volume :/ . I finally sat in the chair so she could start my hair, instead she was making phone calls yelling over the phone being unprofessional while I was waiting for her to start. She was very unprofessional and rude I can't stress this enough! Then she asked me to sit up again, at this point I was fed up if I sat up anymore I'd be standing in the god damn chair! She spoke to me as if I was a child telling me it's gone be hard for her to do my hair if I'm in my phone. This lady is delusional! I've never heard anything like that in my life! I told her I'll leave and I didn't want her finishing my hair. At this point the only thing she did to my hair was wash it and oil it, I didn't pay for the service especially since she was so rude. She kept antagonizing me and it was becoming uncomfortable. I respect my elders but this one right here deserved every word of disrespect. On my way out she called me a "BUTCH" (having an appearance or other qualities of a type traditionally seen as masculine) Butch is a disrespectful term used to offend lesbian females. She made a lot of derogatory comments. Her personality is a facade and she IS NOT WHO SHE APPEARS TO BE! I didn't make the first review she was talking about but I promised her I was going to make this one, I refuse to put my hands on an old, homophobic, miserable, female dog. If you're apart of the LGBTQ community or if you're HUMAN do not visit this place, she's very nasty, unprofessional and disrespectful! My friend literally had to pull me out of that place, tread lightly because if she was on the streets calling someone a "BUTCH" or saying any derogatory remarks it would've definitely ended badly on her part! **When she called me a "BUTCH" me and my friend laughed at her. My usual stylist is in Texas during a hair emergency... ok maybe not an emergency in the normal sense but when you scream at your own reflection it is time to get products, a dryer, and Jesus in the room. The owner was delightful and moved 4 customers through the process with a crafty level of efficiency and good customer service. Folks... my hair looks and feels wonderful. Most especially she uses this oil as part of a hot oil treatment that leaves your locs fragrant and shiny. I ask you, what more could you ask for. She does adjust your head a bit when you slouch or lean too much. But let's be really honest folks... haven't we all been getting this same tug since the hot comb of youth. I was very apprehensive about going from cornrows to locs when I first found Marceline in July 2010. She's very calm, relaxed and professional - and gave me a transitional style - two-strand twists - before I made the jump to locs. I can honestly say I plan to stick with this style - and this stylist - for a long time! I went to Just Locs for the first time yesterday to get starter locs. Although I enjoyed my experience overall, the main reason why I wanted to post a review is because I am beyond thrilled that I left the salon paying the EXACT price that I was quoted. So far in my experience with natural hair salons that NEVER happens. They usually charge more to wash your hair or to provide a deep conditioning treatment. They will also charge an additional fee depending on the length and thickness of your hair. Pretty much any little thing they do they want another $30 for. When I called Marceline at Just Locs to ask for the price of starter locs, I was quoted at $95 and that's exactly how much I paid. Even though my hair is extremely thick and down to my shoulders I still paid $95. Even though she had to struggle with my hair and it took her approx 4 hours to tame, I still paid $95. I even had a hot oil treatment. Still $95. How amazing is that? If you have locs and don't want to pay exorbitant prices AND you want to pay exactly how much you are expecting to, come to Just Locs. read more

I left a message for her, she promptly returned my call and we had a lovely conversation which confirmed that this is where I would go. Marceline gave me great directions and took her time with me on the phone. I arrived a half hour early to my appointment and as I pulled up a woman was leaving the shop and her hair was beautiful - confirmation that I was in the right place. Although I was early, Marceline started me right away. She is a lovely woman and it was a wonderful hair experience. I love the different fragrances to choose from for hot oil treatments and now days later as the wind blows, I still smell gardenias. They say not to leave a review if you are connected to the owner in any way. But Marcelene (the owner) of Just Locs has become a friend. She even has a spare key to my apt in case of emergencies. We debate about whether or not she's been doing my hair for 4/5 years or longer (btw. you and I think it's about 4). She started my locs and I haven't gone anywhere else since. She's down the street from my house and around the corner from the train station so you don't get any more convenient. Time in the shop is spent listening to chill music and having great/stimulating convo with a great cross-section of people that come in the shop. And the price is very much right!! Just Loc's is a one woman operation. Ran by Marceline she does it all. The space is decent (considering its all in her home) and comfortable. Depending on the length of your hair you can expect to be in there 2-3 hours to the most (unless she has several clients; then its almost 4). She usually starts on you from the moment you arrive. What's great about her is that she makes her on oils (conditioner), and conversation is always welcomed. You feel at home because after your first session with her you'd never have to tell her your name again or refresh her on things that were previously mentioned. Although she's very opinionated about how she handles and maintains your hair its in my opinion that she's one of the best locticians out there and there aren't too many in brooklyn.
