I asked for Tika due to all of the pleasant reviews and I'm very skeptic about who's in my hair. When I reached the location I was helped immediately. I had to wait for Tika to come in which wasn't an issue(I knew she wasn't there yet when I was on my way). She started my hair and I never seen someone work so quickly and efficiently. She doesn't braid tight (and I'm very tender headed). She never stuck me once with a needle or anything. She made you feel comfortable by answering any questions you had. I will definitely be back. Also recommendation for the other two stylists that were there...I believe their names were Margaret and Diamond. Everyone's hair that they touched left looking beautiful as well. I'd definitely recommend this shop and Tika!!!

She's also the perfect mix of professional and personable. And sidenote, in these days of covid she and her coworkers keep the shop clean, sanitized, and socially distanced (including temp checks, masks, hand sanitizer, and makeshift partitions for added safety). Even in a city as diverse and progressive as NYC most salons do not cater to maintaining natural African American hair so our options as professionals with locs are limited. I used Yelp and called around to numerous salons only to discover that they all took their last appointment at 5 or maybe 6 which wouldn't be enough time for me to get there after I leave my office. Not willing to sacrifice my Saturdays just to get my hair did I'm so glad I finally found Marlene! I've been wearing my hair natural since I was 17 years old and I've had my locs for 8 years. I've dealt with countless locticians over the years from the DMV (DC, MD, VA) to NYC and Marlene is by far the absolute best! She does an amazing job of cleaning my hair, twisting my locs and she's open to trying any style I bring to her! The woman is a professional and an artist! I owe my long strong healthy natural hair and the cute styles I always rock to expertise and vision as a loctician! I feel so grateful to have found her and I will always recommend her to people who ask me where I get my hair done and I will always be her loyal and dedicated cheerleader and customer! Look no further if you want someone who will have your locs looking fabulous!!

However, the hair dresser that day, cut my hair extremely uneven. I knew from that experience that Dominican salons are not savvy when it comes to African American short hair. I google "black salons near me" and found Nik's Beauty Studio which was the closest. I arrived early this morning & did not have to wait long before for Nik's assistant to wash my hair. I didn't know this salon was by "appointment only" after clarification from Nik. Nik even noticed how badly my hair was trimmed. I asked her to fixed it any way possible. Once it was done, I was pleasantly surprised. I had a beautiful pixie hairstyle which is my first , I never had my this short ever. I will be definitely going back. She is indeed talented!!

I stopped by Nik's salon last week because I wanted to desperately cut my hair over again. I made…read morean appointment for 12:30 and I was exactly on time. When I got in, I wasn't exactly sure who Nik was. She was actually in the back of the salon washing the hair of a client. She said hi to me and told me to take my jacket off and sit down. She asked me, while tending to her other client what style did I have in mind. I did show her the picture of the style I wanted. When she finished with her client, I think she spoke to me after as I sat in her chair. Before I knew it, she immediately picked up the tub of Affirm relaxer. I relaxed my hair a week before but it did not take. She asked me when I relaxed it and I told her when. She said to me that she couldn't do much with my hair because of it. I understood that but she made a few comments about me relaxing my hair myself. I usually do so and it takes but that time it did not. She proceeded to cut my hair because I said so and took me to the sink. The way she washed my hair was very aggressive. I've never had someone scrub my hair in such an aggressive way. It was almost unnecessary. The water from the sink kept splashing on me as well. She molded and wrapped my hair and took me to the dryer. During the time under the dryer, she didn't check on my hair much. She also told me in a slightly disrespectful way to keep my head under the dryer. It was burning quite a bit especially on my ears. There were a few things that she did that I found pretty offensive. She addressed me as "baby." I'm not the biggest fan of women calling me pet names especially when I am a grown woman around the same age as you. It's very disrespectful and sets me off. She did it over and over again, I doubt she knew what my name was. She did not ask me once any time during my service. Another thing that she did which was rude was her use of the N word. Her TV channel was playing the show Love & Hip Hop. She looked up to watch it and said "I wish a n*gga would cheat on me like that I would f*ck him up." Now look, I don't particularly care for the cursing when you're around loved ones, but your salon is a professional establishment or so I assume. The cursing was a turn off. Mind you, this is my first visit at her salon so you can understand why it didn't make for a good first impression with me. When I got into her chair once again, she finished cutting my hair. She grabbed my hair a few times and kept cutting. She cut a lot of my hair off. The cut was okay but I didn't want so much hair to be cut. When it came time to styling, I could feel her inexperience in each curl. She burned me numerous times. She's not very good at curling, so when she curls the back, you will be burned on the scalp. I am sure it's worse when you have a fresh relaxer. She did not use a marcel iron. She used a mini wand I believe. I almost wanted to jump out because I couldn't take the burns anymore. No other stylist has burned me like she did. It was like she didn't care. That alone was enough for me not to come back. At the end of the styling, the style was nice but it was not what I showed her in the picture. It was entirely different. The hair she cut off was all over me. I tried to push it on the floor and she looked me up and down because I was dusting myself off. She didn't really seem to take to me and her attitude became a bit off putting. I let her keep the entire $100 just because. She gave me a shower cap because it was pouring outside. Would I come back? No. Angie is down the street and my regular go to. She also does a great job and has a more pleasant attitude. I think the salon looks okay. The cut was okay and the style was fine but too many stylists are experienced and have slightly better attitudes.

Since then, it appears the service has declined. i had called to make a 1pm appointment, and the young lady who answered indicated that it would be fine. i zelle'd my deposit to them, and then called back the next day to make sure they got it and my appointment was confirmed. Another, older lady who answered, tells me that they got the deposit, but that it would be better for me to come later on in the afternoon. i was on a tight schedule, and coming later that afternoon was not feasible for me. i inquired that if the 1pm appointment was not available, why didn't they let me know that the day prior? After some extensive back-and-forth where both the older lady on the phone and the younger one in the background were rude, i cancelled my appointment. But guess what - they still kept my deposit and made no effort to return it. i considered it a $50 lesson in who NOT to go back to for hair braiding services. i now go to Mamie at Bless Finger on Flatbush Ave whenever i'm in town.
