Just Decks was referred to us by friends of ours and we are so fortunate for that. Our job included the installation of a garage roof deck pergola (including a fan and ceiling lights), updating the iron fencing, and installation of a gate. Marek and his team were wonderful to work with, extremely knowledgeable, and very professional. Just Decks managed the entire architect and city permit process prior to commencing the work. Once started the project was completed within approximately 3 weeks and Marek was on site regularly to check progress and the quality of the work. We appreciated Marek's precise eye when it came to the aesthetics of the work performed. For example, he noticed a small gap in the floorboards and outside structure and installed a trim along the border which looks much nicer. He also noticed that the silver cabling installed by the electrician did not look very good against the brown wood and brought the electrician back out to replace it with brown hardware. Even though you only saw it from the alley, it still made quite a difference and we really appreciated the initiative. Lastly, he was very helpful afterwards as well to connect us with a welder to assist with hanging a hammock chair. Our neighbors were so impressed with the work being performed that they immediately reached out to contract their job as well. We had an expansive garage deck installed with privacy walls, veranda, heater, lighting, television, speakers, planters, and granite bar with built-in refrigerator. We had a massive deck built by them. Mark-the owner/architect. Although seemed nice in the beginning, was condescending towards the end. He told us project would take 2 weeks. It took 6.5 weeks. He disregarded our concerns about a mismatched railing and basically just said we were wrong. Refused to call us. My husband sent him pictures and video and asked to actually talk to him. But he would only respond via email. It can be very frustrating to work with him. He refused to see our point of view or even discuss it or offer to stop by so we could show him what we were talking about. Also when we asked about the hours of the workers, he would just refer to contract...stating there were no hours. Some days they would show up at 1030 & leave at 230. Saturday's were sometimes a no show...which wouldn't have been a big deal except he told us the job would take 2 weeks. It only rained like 2 days. His communication skills are awful. When you run a business, you cannot behave in this manner. It felt a though he took advantage of us with the contract. Richard & Darek-very hard workers. 5 stars! Take pride in their work, but I feel that Mark really made it hard for them to impress us. With being sooo late on the actual original deadline and also having some mismatched railing, we hope when/if we speak to them, they will understand. The deck looks fantastic overall. They really worked hard. Very nice guys & respectful. There are a few issues with Mark. I probably wouldn't use this company again or I would have a VERY specific contract with them if we did. ***update-yesterday Richard was supposed to come and install water as agreed upon at 2p. No call, no show, no email, no text. They cashed out final payment check so I'm sure we'll never hear from Marek again regarding the mismatched railings on the top deck. It's pretty sad because this could be a great company, but Marek has zero desire to actually think that he could be wrong or misunderstanding what we are saying. read more

Experience was terrible. Try even trying to schedule an appointment for an estimate is an issue. Over the course of one week, the owner blew off 2 appointments. First off, originally schedules a time to come over to look. When that time comes, and he hasn't show up. Call up, and he says he didn't think it was a real appointment, despite the fact that he suggested the time. Says that he'll come over the following day to check it out for sure. When i call in the morning, says he will come over at a certain time. never shows up or returns my phone call. I don't think he cares at all about small projects. I would beware, because if this person is as flakey at keeping appointments, imagine trying to allow and trust this company to build your deck. I wouldn't. If he doesn't want the project just say so, don't string the customer along. read more

Well, the deck. The deck looks beyond amazing, and everybody has compliments to give. I am a very satisfied customer and can give full recommendations to anyone which may ask. Pricing was fair, work is of absolutely great quality and this is what truly matters. Just Decks was a disappointment and a waste of time. For better clarification the owner Marek is completely unprofessional, rude and arrogant. After we waited weeks for an estimate, quote and finally a contract we were told they were to busy for our project. Really? We were open to another time frame or start date but instead we were denied the project completely. Marek was rather consistent in bashing his competitors as I assume it's out of fear. Competition is good and in this case much better than Just Decks. My recommendation maybe focus on your own business and standing by your projects. read more

After two false starts,one with Voltaire's gardener and the other with rooftopia, both of whom were complete disappointments, we found Marek and Amy of just decks. After our experience with the other companies,we were pleasantly surprised when Marek arrived to inspect our roof and gave a detailed quote well within the promised timeframe. Before signing a contact, Marek let us know when to expect the project to begin, and how long it would take. We inspected a project that was near completion on west Washington and then signed our contract. Our roof deck project began three weeks later, as promised, and took about one week to complete. The crew was extremely punctual, neat and precise. One aspect we especially appreciated was the care the crew took. They did not just do the job, they did it as if it would be their deck,making no sloppy errors and taking no shortcuts. My experience with Mark and Just Decks was awesome. I had several vendors come out to price out my roof top and Mark had the best pricing and best designs bar none. They were here when they were scheduled and barring any weather delays the project was completed promptly, so quick that my neighbors commented that one day they were up on their roofs and the next time they went up there I had a beautiful completed deck. Prior to making my decision Mark gave me a list of previous clients that I was able to call to see what kind of experience they encountered which relieved any concerns I had before entering such a big endeavor. I have to agree with the other comments on here, it seems they have more business then they can handle, and cant bother to respond or interact with anyone. We have sent three emails over the past few years, each time several weeks go by and we get a canned response of "Thanks for your continued interest unfortunately we will not be able to assist you with the project ." Just Decks did an amazing job in building our pergola, on our garage roof deck for our home in Bucktown. The owner Mark to our house first for the estimate, other companies tried convincing us to pay a design fee without even seeing our deck. They provided a very detailed **custom** design for a contemporary look, and far exceeded our expectations. They came in at a **lower cost than other estimates we got and built a far better pergola than others had offered. Very sound structure that is going to last over time and not warp.. like other simple, thin layer designs that were offered by other companies. Very professional. Would I use Just Decks again? Yes, most definitely. Marek (owner) was very easy to work with and had some great ideas. I thought we worked well together as we planned the deck and water feature. I found his responses to questions and phone calls to be prompt, thorough and professional. Quality of work - very good. They were completing the deck as the snow was literally falling and were present every day to meet their deadline. My neighbors have all been quite impressed and my wife and I are very happy. Marek was not particularly happy with a small item on the electrical work (I had no problem with the item), but he insisted the electrical contractor come back and make a minor modification. If he isn't satisfied with something, he'll tell you and he'll deal with it quickly. Our deck is on top of our garage and Marek's team was also able to make some minor repairs to my garage roof. This was very convenient and allowed me to work with only one contractor. Timeliness for completing work - they were within the timeframe they predicted (allowing for weather). Again, my ongoing communication with Marek allowed me to stay well informed of their plans and timing. Professionalism of the crew - very good. They did nice work, were courteous, made some suggestions, and cleaned up when the job was finished. Overall, they did a nice job. He has some very good guys on the crew. Overall, an excellent job. I have a row house with a garage in back. I wanted to build a deck on top of the garage, and access it from the second floor ( kitchen) of the house. Marek designed a fabulous walkway, reinforced the walkway and garage with steel beams, and covered it with a superior grade of cedar. THEN if that we're not enough, he designed a series of cedar planter boxes around the interior perimeter, and helped us fill them with espaliered trees from Gethsemane Gardens, on Clark Street. Working with Marek isn't like working with your local handyman, this is a gifted architect who brings all of his impressive resources to every job. Anything is possible and amazingly priced. BUYER BEWARE! I asked Just Decks to come out and give me an estimate on 2 projects. One was a wooden deck that needs to be power washed, cleaned and re-stained. The second was a composite deck that I asked if they could scrub it and make it pretty again after 10 years of wear. On that deck we have 4" x 8" wooden planters that needed to either be fixed and re-stained or rebuilt. After they sent out their inspector and he took pictures, I just heard from them today. They REFUSED to do what I asked! I cannot believe in this economy that any provider would see any job too small. They recommended that the wooden deck be torn out and replaced to the tune of $2,200 and the composite deck replaced for $5,800! What a joke! Both are in good shape and do not need to be replaced. Talk about extortion and trying to take advantage of a customer!!! Before they came out, I had other estimates. I asked for Just Decks to clean and re-stain the wood deck - estimate $499. Clean the composite deck - $400. Remake the planters - $400 each. All of this was reasonable and within my budget. Just Decks literally refused to do what I asked!! Whatever happened to "the customer is always right?" I am convinced that they saw my "little" job as non important and would only come to my home if they could suck more money out of me. The decks are both in great shape and I just wanted them to be cleaned and to have new life in them. I am going to find another deck contractor in Chicago who will not try to extort money from me for my future home jobs. Just Decks just wanted more money and refused me because they think my job was not significant enough. These kind of contractors should be put out of business. I could not be happier with the process or the product. Mark and Just Decks provided the most detailed and informative estimate of any of the many contractors who quoted the job. Mark and his team are civil, conscientious, and committed to quality. This was a big job (a 3 1/2-story porch on a multi-unit building), and the city's building department has its elaborate requirements. Just Decks did an amazing job on my roof top deck. From the design, to the execution, I was pleased to work with Marek on my project. They started the build later in the fall season and completed the project before the harsh winter weather swept in. The steel used for a crucial egress point was welded together with skill and displays solid welds, clean lines and perfect right angles.
