The story here is that everything about this place is average. Hey, that means *not bad*, so it's an ok experience. I eat here every so often, and it's genuinely not bad :-)
My beef with this burger joint (see what I did there just now?) is that it's pretty inconsistent, and the staff, while friendly, are also, well, a little thick. Let me explain.
First the food.
Burgers are not bad (sorry, I just don't know how else to describe this!). The patties are of a reasonable size, not too small and not large, and the bun is a kaiser-type roll which is... not bad. They are occasionally inconsistent - most of the time when I've asked for well-done, I get a nicely well-done, but not burnt, burger. Once in a while, it'll be way too dry (not just a slight deviation, which I can deal with, but seriously sahara-dry).
The fries, both the regular ones and the sweet potato ones, are better than "not bad", they're good.
And I like the fact that Junior's has chosen to be neutral in the cola wars. A Switzerland among the violence of beverage marketing. You see, they have an RC Cola fountain, with all the other RC brands, such as Diet Rite (better than Diet Pepsi, not as good as Diet Coke... again, average and "not bad") , they have Mr. Pibb (Dr. Pepper's cousin), and a favorite of mine, Bosco. In fact, this place may be worth a visit just to have Bosco from the fountain. Probably the only place in Hudson County with this.
The service is reasonably quick, can't complain. But the staff is a little dim (sorry girls, I don't say this to be mean-spirited). For example, you have to ask to have lettuce, tomotoes, onions, etc. Ok... no problem with that, except NOBODY INFORMS YOU OF THIS, and if you neglect to ask for them, maybe assuming you don't have to, NOBODY ASKS YOU if you'd like them included. It like these young counter ladies are nuns sworn to silence. So unless you already know, you get your burger with the buns already sealed shut by melted cheese, and can't add these extras unless you want to rip the bun.
And more than once, when visiting with friends, they'll serve up three or four of our orders in baskets, without having tracked which order was which, and with no way to identify them anymore. But since they're not wait staff, I don't think they've thought that far ahead, and the problem of getting the right order to the right person is really of no interest to them.
Finally (phew)... this place is one of the few burger joints in Hoboken that delivers!
Bottom line: food ok, service is kinda lacking in a keystone cops kinda way. Worth a visit if you want a burger that's not too bad. And if you want delivery, then you might not have a choice. At least not until Five Brothers opens up. And while I think Junior's is ok, I really freakin' love Five Brothers. read more
