Wow. I can't believe this place has so many good reviews. I must have gone on an off-day. I would say that maybe I'll go back and re-review, but that's never going to happen. I will never go to this cafe again!! My siblings and I went to Yosemite for the first time two days ago. On the drive I searched for places to eat along our route. This place came up as one of the only places open (it was a Sunday) and also specifically mentioned having vegan and vegetarian menu items, which I hadn't even searched for, but being a vegan, that was a bonus! We arrived and it was pretty busy - there were a lot of people who had already been served. Everyone looked happy and everything seemed promising for us. The time was 9:45am so they were only serving breakfast or trail lunches to-go. We opted for breakfast. I didn't see any vegan menu items (except for a hummus wrap off the lunch menu), but in the corner of the breakfast menu it said "vegan options upon request". So I asked the gentleman at the counter what the vegan options were. He said that eggs could be swapped out for "tofu scramble." Ok! I'll do that...so I ordered the "California" which is "eggs", avocado, tomato and toast. I ordered it with hash browns added. My siblings ordered the chorizo burrito which come with hash browns. My meal was $11+, plus a $1 tip, came to just under $13. Our food came out at a reasonable time. We waited a little long considering how many people had already been served, but we didn't mind because we had the time. My food came out first and the toast was not hot. It was barely toasted, cold and limp. It was already getting soggy from the "tofu scramble" it was next to. The scramble was not a scramble at all. It was literally tofu just slightly crumbled up and heated up. It had literally no flavor. The hash browns also had absolutely no flavor and they were mushy. I got 1/4 of an avocado, and 3 small pieces of a small tomato, all of which still had the produce sticker on, and one of the pieces of tomato was the butt of the tomato. I have never put so many condiments on my food in my entire life. This meal was only slightly enjoyable due to copious amounts of ketchup, jalapeño tobasco, salt, and pepper. I was so upset about the lack of avocado and tomato, and the sticker on the produce and the butt of the tomato, that I went up to the counter and asked for another 1/4 of avocado and a few more slices of tomato. Unapologetically, I was served just a little bit more produce. No questions asked, thank God, or else I would have flipped my friggin' lid. My siblings food was either equally just as bad or worse. They said their burritos had absolutely no flavor or distinct texture except for onions (I joked maybe the texture was June Bugs, not onions). Their hash browns were also mushy. We were all incredibly dissatisfied and disgusted by this place. I am thoroughly disgusted by the lack of enthusiasm in the food. It is actually impressive how flavorless it was. It takes effort to make food that bad. There was absolutely no passion there. They are lucky Gordon Ramsay hasn't waltzed in there and ripped them a new one. I will never be back to this place. I stayed here as part of a class (WFR Recert). The option to buy a meal plan was really nice. We enjoyed staying here enough that we decided to stay past the course. My wife and I purposefully didn't order all of our meals that we had paid for so we could eat those meals later so, I was a little disappointed that the meal tickets that we got during the course expired after the course was over, but it was understandable. The prices are reasonable for the area and the food is above average catering to visitors tastes. I can imagine that a place like this has a lot of staff turnover and limited training and that probably leads to quality inconsistencies (which we did experience during our stay), hence the occasional negative reviews. It seems like one of the most recent negative reviews came from someone who just wanted to leave a bad review. read more

Well deserved 5 stars for the 2 great sit down meals I enjoyed a few weeks back, believe I was there on the day when they reopened the inside seating. But I noticed they had done a great job of setting up comfortable outdoor seating. Well done chefs! read more

Food came out barely warm. I like my turkey and elk hot. When meat is almost cold it tastes like leftovers that are hard and chewy. Average food. Maybe this is good for Yosemite...as there are very few restaurants to eat at. Staff is very nice. But would not come back. read more

The yin to the Bug's yang! A delightful cafe/restaurant with a decent beer selection, delicious food (vegan friendly), and a warm environment. They set us up with a packed lunch for our day of snow shoeing and even wrapped the bread separately so the sandwich wouldn't get all soggy. Nice spot to get some food. Heading in or out of Yosemite on the 140, if you get to Midpines, STOP!!! Do not go to Burger King in Mariposa on the way up. You will miss out on something nice. Vegetarian, burger, chicken, ribeye, you name it. Very good eating, not too expensive. Cheap for lunch items, about $20 for a dinner. I was told not to get the salmon (by a local in Mariposa.) Otherwise, highly recommended by locals (just 5 miles away from Mariposa natives, so there are lots of teenagers hanging out. It's just a fun spot to stop. read more

Huge high five to the Bug!! We are locals and go here several times a month. The menu is always being recreated with fresh, seasonal foods. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. I love the variety of international travelers who visit the hostel, and the peppering of locals who we see at the Bug Cafe. From time to time, there is often live music played in the cafe which is wonderful. Our family loves going here! read more

The Cafe is A-OK. This review is only for the breakfast menu, so don't jump to any conclusions about the other food. overall the prices for breakfast range from $5-7.50. on the low end ($5) you can get the continental: Two eggs (scrambled or fried), two pieces of toast, and a drink (no refills). When I had the eggs fried they were cooked perfectly, but the scrambled eggs were bland. I was able to exchange my toast for hash browns, but they weren't crispy enough for my liking. The coffee was underwelming, go with one of the other juices. on the higher end ($7.50) you can get a pretty big sized omelet. Lots of egg cheese and potatoes. overall, The food isn't fabulous, but its what you would expect given the context and convenient if you are staying at the bug. The food took a while to come out, but the staff was friendly. I think the food came out slowly, because they essentially have 1 person taking orders, 1 person cooking, and 1 person cleaning. So they aren't doing bad. note: to use a card you must make a minimum purchase of $10 They also have a computer if you need to use the internet. read more

It's like if Patagonia opened a cafe. It's like a more granola version of the Prancing Pony in LOTR where the hobbits meet Aragorn. I was staying at the hostel and was kind of expecting just generic hotel food, then I got a breakfast burrito one day before going into the park and it was killer! I ate every meal here afterward, and everything I had was well above average. Great menu variety, beer on tap, awesome atmosphere to hang out in after a long hike even if you're not staying at the hostel. Seriously, everything is good, would give it 6 stars if I could. read more

Found this place on Yelp. We stayed at Yosemite View Lodge and was looking for a place for breakfast. The restaurant at the lodge was way too pricey. We left Yosemite this morning to head out and decided to try the June Bug Cafe. You order your food at the counter and they bring your food to you. You get your coffee cup and water glasses and serve yourself. You also grab your own utensils and when you're finished, you bring your dishes up. The food was good and not overpriced. We arrived around 9am this morning and it wasn't crowded. Visiting the Yosemite area in the off season, is a great time. read more

TIP: Stop by on your way to or from Yosemite--you're welcome at the cafe even if you don't stay at the hostel! One year later, and the Cafe at the Bug is still, thankfully, exactly the same as it was when I last visited! It's so comforting to eat here after a long drive or after a long hike. My boyfriend and I were so bummed that we got out of Yosemite too late for dinner--the kitchen closes one to two hours before the cafe does, so while drinks are still available for order, food is not. What did we miss out on? Plates come out hot and stay hot. For dinner, my boyfriend had the pulled pork ($12), which was tender and juicy. I had the roast chicken ($12), which was equally tender and juicy. The mashed potatoes still had some lumps in it--that didn't bother me because it meant that they actually used whole potatoes. The roasted vegetables that came with our meat were flavorful. Every bite was delicious, even til the end! For breakfast, I forgot about what I saw last year and ordered a blueberry buckwheat pancake ($6.50). I didn't regret it because it was perfectly cooked and fluffy, but it is HUGE! My boyfriend ordered a breakfast burrito ($8), which came in a sturdy tortilla so it didn't fall apart. The black beans, egg, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and cheese came together nicely and each warm bite was full of yummy fillings. I will never hesitate to return to the Cafe at the Bug! read more

This little cafe that accompanies the "Yosemite Bug" hostel is in the middle of nowhere. So you expect that the food is going to anywhere from bad to mediocre. After all, they have absolutely zero competition and they already have hungry guests on the premises. I expected to go into here paying top dollar for terrible food. Thankfully I was completely wrong. The food here is not only reasonably priced but it is excellent. I ate here for dinner and breakfast for 2 days and I was never disappointed. For breakfast I had eggs and bacon with toast and another day I had the breakfast burrito. Both were very good. For Dinner I had the pork loin which was pretty good and the salmon which was absolutely excellent. Breakfast ranged from 5-9 dollars and dinner was 10-18. This is cafeteria style ordering but they bring your food to you. Can't really rate on service here. However, I will say that the food came out very quickly. Average of 10 minutes from ordering to the table. If you're staying at the hostel you will be delightfully surprised. If you're on your way to Yosemite and you're hungry this is a worth a special stop. read more

THE BEST PLACE TO EAT EVER! Love the atmosphere, quality of the food, and the people. I have gone here for events, dates, with family, friends, whatever. This is the place I go to to show off what local ingredients taste like. The prices can be a bit deterring, but in conjunction with the quality and quantity of the food, totally worth it. Dig that they only have beer/cider on tap in large pints. And even if they are busy and the food takes a while, the scenery makes it worth the trip. Just the thing I needed after a long day of hiking around Yosemite on a cold rainy winter day. Ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pasta. It came with a soup- there were 2 option and I picked the ham and beans soup. The guy at the counter ladled out a nice warm bowl immediately for me to enjoy while I waited for the pasta. The pasta was huge and tasty (are rare combination these days). Plenty of hunks of Buffalo Chicken over penne in white sauce topped with bacon and blue cheese. Yum!! I spent over 2 hrs hour leisurely surfing the net and eating my delish meal. Service was warm as was the ambience and decor. Great vegetarian options. We had veggie Mac and cheese (with broccoli and tomatoes) with a side of garlic bread and soup--all included, and a coconut-rubbed tempeh with eggplant and a side salad. Holy wow! Went to Yosemite and stayed near El Portal. Limited options but saw June Bug and liked the menu. First night we went (note that I said first) the line was huge. Took quite a while but the food was well worth the wait. The menu changes nightly. We had steak and a chicken sandwich. Cooked extremely well. Second night had the pork chop and a shrimp po boy. Even better than first night. Great folks and super food. Recommend it highly! read more

We were visiting the mountain and located this tiny place off a dirt road. Do not come here real hungry. Portions are small. Prices way too expensive for what you get. Selection is limited. Cut off times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Next time we will stick with Burger King down the road. read more

I am a local, and I love this place. Dinners are consistently good (trust me I eat there at least once a week) and there portions are out of control, I always bring a to go box when I eat there! There is always a vegan/veg. option. They try to use local ingredients and they even sometimes use items from their very own garden, totally cool! I usually expect to drop $20 on dinner and a drink, but I usually get two meals out of it, and it is so good. I had pulled pork last night and it was hot and spicy! The coleslaw was a good pairing with it, somewhat sweet to tame the spice of the pork, and the mashed potatoes were to die for! I usually do a combo Bug experience on Sundays- restorative yoga, spa, and dinner at the cafe-what a great way to finish the weekend! read more

I'm a local and come here every time I come home from college in San Diego. This place is so delicious and can easily compare to any of the restaurants down there. Even though the menu is small, it makes the food THAT much better. I love that they use local ingredients and even items from their own garden. It is pretty pricey for a cafe at a hostel and you can easily expect to drop around $30 per person (unless you get a smaller plate like Mac and Cheese). The last time I was here I had trout with a romesco sauce and seasonal veggies, which was grilled zucchini. I'm a huge foodie and have eaten all over the world. This trout plate has definitely won my heart over for top 10 favorite meals! It's a really cool place to eat and definitely worth the stop on the way back from the park! read more

Hidden gem! We found this entirely by accident! We were too early to check into our room so took a drive to look for food & hiking since the lodge restaurant was closed. It looked tiny nestled in a cabin setting but was actually very spacious inside. Cozy fireplace. Menu was diverse and we all had different items ranging from a grass fed burger to pesto pasta. Everything was delicious! They even have wedding/group advertisements. We will definitely come back here next time we go to Yosemite. read more

We decided to try this place on our last day in Yosemite. It was a little close than some of the other recommended places. The parking is super weird here. Also the entrance was not clearly marked. You have to bus your table. The menu has very limited options. Maybe something that is not so millennial and complicated would be nice. The pies were ok. Yes homemade but not wow. The flat iron steak was good but the mashed potatoes and veggies were just eh. When I go back to the area I will not come back here. Very pricey for what you get in my opinion. Also it should be noted that that staff was a little on the rude side and the guys were saying "guey" a lot to each other which is fine if you are not around your customers. I am bilingual and look very "ethnic" and in fact I spoke to the guy who took my order in Spanish after a confusion with my order. But then him and his coworker were just throwing the "guey" everywhere. It's slang for dude but worse and almost vulgar. That turned me off. read more

Well...I thought I might cook that night but the hostel kitchen was very bare...so...I went to the cafe. The meals are huge and I wasn't nearly that hungry, but they let me order a salad and roll with my peanutbutter pie YEAH! What can I say...the salad was warm and limp while the roll was cold (would've been much better the other way around). OK on to dessert. The pie in the case looked amazing! The one I got...not so much. Can I just suggest that you NOT plastic wrap the pies. The condensation totally ruined what was probably an excellent pie. Against my better judgement, I went ahead and ordered breakfast (the American) the next morning. I got it with bacon, because the counter girl said it was great. Well...it probably was before it was cooked to death. Again with the cold bread (seems like a theme). Toast should be at least mildly warm. The hashbrowns had a funky (oil I think) flavor. But the eggs were great-and I am not a real fan of eggs (but these had real egg flavor). Bottom line-paid too much for passable food and getting to bus my own table. Bring your own groceries (everything you might need, including oil and salt) and make your own in the kitchen. If you can cook at all, this will be the better choice. Heck...opening a can and heating it on the stove would probably be an improvement. Sorry guys, I wanted to like you and gave you 2 tries. Get it together...this is not rocket science. read more

Review is for service only After driving over two hours we excitedly arrived to look up at the menu and see that lunch ended at 2pm it was 2:03pm there was a woman at the counter just completing her order and then sat a a nearby table. I stood there at the counter with a petite young lady at the register wearing a beanie completely ignoring me.. Yes I completely understand lunch stops at 2pm. I get it BUT???? Couldn't she have looked up and at least said maybe something like " sorry folks lunch ends at 2pm but you can still order drinks" she said nothing . I stood there for approx 4-5 minutes with her continuing to move things around clean etc.. No acknowledgement , really?? How sad that you can work in a customer service business and not give a rats behind about someone standing right in front of you within inches for goodness sake .. Just an acknowledgment would have made our wasted drive seem okay and we probably would have laughed all the way back to the car at our silly mistake but ignoring us was hurtful.. I work extremely hard for my money and sometimes I have to be nice and friendly when I'd rather not but that's what I get paid to do .. It's called a job, if you can't be nice to people go work where you have no personal contact . read more

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the cafe at Yosemite Bug Hostel. Great place the hang out and the food was plentiful and enjoyable (though not inexpensive). My favorite beers were on tap: Guinness and Stella Artois, although I wish they served them colder. I didn't mind paying extra considering the hostel's somewhat remote location, the location convenience from the hostel, and it looked like the staff were getting paid decent wages. read more
