Their rotating vegetarian option is also vegan. I think the week I went was a miss, it was bean and something crunchy. Missing flavor, but the salsa really helped it. Everyone who got a meat option said it was really good. They loved everything that they got. Next time I would better check their vegan option, but it is nice that they always have one ready for you. The counter person was polite, the empanadas were not provided immediately it took about 10 minutes after waiting for a previous order to be filled. Julia's Empanadas was perfect for a quick lunch near Adams Morgan. This is a hole-in-the-wall spot, and I was craving something fairly small for lunch since we were going out to dinner later. After taking one look at the specials board, I knew the vegetarian empanada was the option for me. This empanada was vegan as well. Of course, plenty of meaty options or vegetarian with cheese options are also available. The lady who rang up my order was super nice, and I told her I was excited to get an empanada since we do not have that many empanada spots back home. My empanada was packaged really well. It would be perfect to eat on the go, and it was warm throughout. Even after walking 1/3 of a mile back to my hotel and getting to the room, it was still warm. I absolutely love this place for a quick and affordable bite! Empanadas are one of the most comforting hand-held bites you can have, they take a lot of dedication in terms of labor and thought in what makes a great filling, so I'm glad that there is a bakery solely dedicated to the craft of the great empanada. The menu is incredibly varied, drawing from flavors not only derived from the south American communities that make empanadas (such as chorizo or Saltena), but drafting from the unique flavor profiles that are present in the DMV such as Jamaican. There are also vegan empanadas! Which were extremely satisfying and taken with the same consideration as their non-vegan counterparts. The pastry casing was delightful to see with all the hot empanadas that were likely made the day of. The quality of the empanada is great, the pleats are tight and don't even add an unnecessary thickness. The dough has a tight crumb as well and all of these things mean that the filling is secured and insulated with all of its unique juices and seasonings and that it will come in your hand piping hot! Their dessert empanadas are so delicious with a unique variety of fruit flavors. The guava is a personal favorite, because its so sweet and tangy. Genuine guava is a had flavor to get in any metropolitan city so I'm glad I got to have a taste of it through this bakery. Whoever Julia is, you did your big one here. Thank you! Note, this is a bakery front, so the bakery is done in house (and they evidently produce really high quality empanadas) and the countertop. There is no seating inside, aside from the bench outside! But thats fine because empanadas are a handheld. It is savory and balanced well with sweet and salty that come from the other ingredients. A must try. The chipotle steak was a special item on the menu. I missed out on Julia's Empanadas from an event that catered from them, my friends were raving about the food so I had to go to the store myself and try it. Visited this location and bought 2 saltena, 1 chorizo, 2 chilean style beef, 1 Jamaican style and 1 dessert peach guava empanadas to go. I think it's due to my taste buds acting weird recently but unfortunately I didn't like any of the meaty empanadas at all, only kind of liked the peach guava. My SO ended up eating 90% of the empanadas over a couple of days (they are huge) and he said he liked all of them. A little disappointed I must say I was craving these empanadas for weeks and when I finally sat down to take a bite it wasn't as I remembered. I paid 19 dollars for two drinks and three empanadas, I could have easily gone somewhere else that sold cheaper empanadas that tasted way better but for some reason had Julia's heavy on my mind. The chorizo empanada literally had no chorizo in it I think the little red specs we had seen could have been it but it was to hard to tell. The chicken empanada had good curry flavor and that's about it the curry was the only thing that shined through everything else was bland. As for the spinach one, nothing exciting the cheese had no real robust flavor and in the end I was just eating cooked spinach with cheese swirled into it.
